When His Nauseous Sweetheart Frowns, the Tycoon's Family Takes Turns Pampering Her-Chapter 39: Taking Care of You Is What I Should Do
Yvonne Rhodes, another guest returning from the banquet, was not finding it so easy to fall asleep.
She applied a face mask and leaned back in her lounge chair as a sense of gloom slowly filled the space.
’Ian has changed. He used to be all business, but now he’s even colder to me.’
’Those men are all cunning old foxes, experts at sucking up to the right people.’
’Without Ian by my side, that pack of dogs all found ways to touch me, to take advantage of me.’
’But they were our partners, so I had no choice but to smile and play along.’
’It made me soak in the bathtub for a full hour before I finally felt a little better.’
She idly scrolled through the photos from the day. Not a single one was usable.
In the quiet of the night, Yvonne Rhodes’s eyes suddenly lit up.
She smugly cropped a photo. "Luna Axton, hmph. Just some little schoolgirl."
’As long as Luna Axton is out of the picture, Ian will treat me like he used to. We’ll manage clients together, toasting and laughing.’
Once the photo was edited, Yvonne Rhodes posted the group shot from the day to her social media.
Caption: Surrounded by industry titans. Another fulfilling day. Good night.
The next morning, Rosalind Fairchild was scrolling through her phone while eating breakfast.
She happened to see Yvonne’s post. "Look, isn’t Yvonne amazing?"
She placed the phone in front of Miles Jacobs. "These are all prominent figures in Valoria. Yvonne is finally able to network with them, learning and gaining experience."
Miles Jacobs gave it a token glance. Other than Blaze Fairchild in the middle, he didn’t recognize anyone.
He patted Rosalind Fairchild’s hand. "I have faith in how you’re raising her, but you can’t spoil her too much. She needs to learn to be self-reliant. What you have in your own mind is the only thing that truly belongs to you."
Miles Jacobs was grateful for Rosalind Fairchild’s devotion to their family. Because she took full responsibility for the children, he was free to focus on his work without any worries.
"I remember everything you’ve said. You always say one has to strive for things on their own. That’s why I had Yvonne start from the ground up at Evergrow. Otherwise, with her capabilities, she could have easily been a department head."
Just as they were speaking, Yvonne Rhodes came downstairs, looking absolutely stunning.
"Uncle, Aunt, good morning."
Today, she wore a pink, classic-style tweed suit, with a string of lustrous pearls around her neck. She looked dignified and classy, yet with an air of delicate femininity.
As a fellow woman, Rosalind Fairchild knew exactly what Yvonne was up to.
Her eyes filled with admiration as she gushed, "Oh, my! Our Yvonne is just too beautiful."
Miles Jacobs’s eyes narrowed slightly. "It’s New Year’s Day, just a family dinner. Isn’t your outfit a little too formal?"
He was a man who paid attention to detail and was very particular about dressing for the occasion.
Yvonne Rhodes had been raised in their home since she was a child. Rosalind Fairchild had brought her up well, and she showed none of the awkwardness or timidity she’d had when she first arrived in Valoria.
Now that she had entered the workforce, as her uncle, he made it a habit to bring up these details he felt she should know.
Rosalind Fairchild linked her arm through his, chiding playfully, "Why do you care what young people wear? If they don’t dress up at this age, when will they?"
"Fine, I suppose I’m the one who can’t appreciate it," Miles Jacobs said with a smile. He always gave in to Rosalind Fairchild. "Eat your breakfast."
"Okay, Uncle."
Yvonne Rhodes was well aware that while her uncle looked gentle and easygoing, he was terrifying when he lost his temper.
She would never dare to defy her uncle, but as long as her aunt was around, he wouldn’t try to rein her in.
Miles Jacobs didn’t see his son. "Where’s Kai?"
"Let him sleep in. He finally got a chance to relax last night," Rosalind Fairchild said, defending her son. "We can wake him when it’s time to go. It’s not like boys need a lot of time to get ready."
Even though it was New Year’s Day, Luna Axton couldn’t skip her morning prenatal fitness class.
After more than a month of practice, her body was no longer so stiff, and her face didn’t twist into the same pained grimace it had at the beginning.
"Very good, hold that pose..." Ms. Belle encouraged her gently.
Luna Axton, however, stared at the figure’s back in the full-length mirror, secretly gritting her teeth to maintain a steady effort.
’How can Blaze Fairchild run on the treadmill for a solid hour without even gasping for air?’
His damp shirt clung to his body, revealing broad shoulders and a narrow waist. The muscles in his back rippled with each stride.
His long legs churned tirelessly on the treadmill, as if he had an inexhaustible supply of energy to burn.
"Alright, Young Madam, let’s move on to the next exercise."
Luna Axton followed the instruction and drew her leg in. Her gaze happened to fall on her left big toe. The nail was trimmed neatly.
Blaze Fairchild had trimmed it for her last night by the light of a small desk lamp when he returned from his business function.
The scene replayed in her mind like a movie. The atmosphere had been far too intimate, and her face grew hot at the memory.
’With so many things Blaze Fairchild did, if he hadn’t repeatedly stressed that theirs was a marriage of convenience and that he was only concerned about the baby, she would have truly thought he liked her.’
Ms. Belle saw her flushed cheeks and assumed she was tired from the day’s workout. "Young Madam, we’ll finish after this set."
"Okay," Luna Axton agreed, feeling a bit guilty as she continued the lesson.
Blaze Fairchild turned off the treadmill. He glanced at her as he left, his expression unreadable.
Like a model student showing off a certificate of merit, Luna Axton straightened her back, extending her body as much as possible.
By the time she finished and went upstairs, Blaze Fairchild had already showered and changed into casual clothes.
He wore a white crew-neck T-shirt under a loose, comfortable jacket. Even the back of his head exuded an air of sophistication and class.
He was lounging on the sofa, lazily scrolling through his phone. Steam rose from the coffee on the end table. His neck was long and slender.
Blaze Fairchild was on the phone. He glanced over at the sound of her approach before turning back to his conversation.
When she came out after her shower, Blaze Fairchild patted the spot on the sofa next to him. "Come here."
Luna Axton’s face flushed the moment he lifted her foot and placed it on his lap.
She could clearly feel the firm muscle of his thigh beneath her foot.
As Blaze Fairchild’s large, warm hand enveloped her slender foot, a ticklish sensation made her heart flutter.
A cool antiseptic spray misted her foot. The meticulous way Blaze Fairchild attended to her made it seem as if he were handling a priceless treasure.
Blaze Fairchild glanced up and saw that her face was beet red, her earlobes so flushed they looked like they might start bleeding.
Realization dawned on him a moment later, and he awkwardly looked away as he put the first-aid kit away.
"Thank you, Mr. Fairchild."
"Taking care of you is my responsibility."
The words slipped out of Blaze Fairchild’s mouth, and the atmosphere instantly grew intimate. Both of them felt awkward.
Luna Axton had some fruit and nuts before they left for Pinehurst Estate, one walking slightly ahead of the other.
When they arrived, people were already seated in the living room, drinking tea and chatting.
"Aunt, Uncle."
At his grandfather’s house, Blaze Fairchild still made sure to observe basic etiquette.
Luna Axton looked at the couple and greeted them as well.
"Hello," Miles Jacobs responded simply, as was fitting for an elder.
Kai, on the other hand, was slouching beside them with his hands flat on the sofa cushions and one leg crossed over the other, showing a complete lack of decorum.
Miles smacked Kai on the leg. "Say hello."
"Hey, Cousin. Hey, Cousin-in-law."
Luna Axton nodded with a small smile. ’So he’s the one who wears all those flashy clothes,’ she thought.
Luna Axton took in Yvonne Rhodes’s pining gaze and Rosalind Fairchild’s malicious smile.
’I don’t want to stay here. Dealing with these people is exhausting.’
"Grandpa, I’m going to the kitchen to get something to drink." She made up an excuse to slip away. She couldn’t drink tea anyway.
Yvonne Rhodes watched the retreating figure, and her gaze fell back on Blaze Fairchild.
’They’re actually wearing matching outfits.’
Resentfully, she stood up. "Grandpa Fairchild, I’m a little thirsty too. I’ll go see how Luna is doing."
