When His Nauseous Sweetheart Frowns, the Tycoon's Family Takes Turns Pampering Her-Chapter 28: Miss Fairchild, Long Time No See
Julian Fairchild watched his young daughter running toward him. She was his only daughter and bore a striking resemblance to his late wife.
When Rosalind Fairchild reached him, Julian Fairchild said dotingly, "You’re a grown woman now, but you still run around so carelessly."
Rosalind Fairchild linked her arm with Julian Fairchild’s and said sweetly, "No matter how old I get, I’ll always be your daughter."
His daughter was such a comfort. Julian Fairchild chuckled and patted Rosalind Fairchild’s head.
Miles Jacobs was used to the father and daughter’s affectionate display. He stood to the side, watching Rosalind Fairchild with the same fond expression.
He was a boy who had come from the mountains, and his familial ties were tenuous.
His parents had passed away one after the other, and even his only sister’s whereabouts were unknown.
He envied the deep affection among the members of the Fairchild Family.
"Miles."
Hearing his father-in-law’s voice, Miles Jacobs responded respectfully, "Dad, I came back from my business trip to report on my work, and I had some free time today to bring you your New Year’s gift."
He always did this, delivering gifts to his in-laws before the holidays to avoid gossip and prevent giving anyone leverage against him.
Ever since he married Rosalind Fairchild, he had always delivered the holiday gifts in person.
The Fairchild Family wanted for nothing; it was the thought and the gesture that counted.
"Did the trip go smoothly?"
"It went very smoothly. Thank you for your concern, Dad."
"As long as it was smooth and safe. You went to Kamaria this time?"
Miles Jacobs maintained a faint smile, but his Seven-orifice Exquisite Heart was working furiously.
His father-in-law rarely asked about his affairs. One was in government, the other in business, and both knew to avoid any appearance of impropriety. A gentleman, after all, does not stand beneath a collapsing wall.
Now that Julian Fairchild was bringing up his work voluntarily, ’Is it for Rosalind Fairchild?’
’As a father who dotes on his daughter so much, he surely can’t bear to see her suffer hardships by following me on my overseas assignments, nor does he want us to be separated for long.’
Having figured this out, he finally spoke.
"Yes. Special Envoy Frost is the plenipotentiary envoy to Kamaria. He has made immense contributions to establishing friendly diplomatic relations between our two countries and is a role model for us all."
A flicker of impatience crossed Julian Fairchild’s eyes. He disliked it when family conversations turned into probing for advantages and balancing interests.
His Fairchild Family had been established in Valoria for centuries, and their ancestors had even served as high officials.
Three generations had built the Evergrow Group into a powerhouse; they wouldn’t be intimidated by a first-generation official like him.
If his daughter hadn’t been so fond of him, he never would have chosen a son-in-law with such a calculating mind.
But Julian Fairchild didn’t let these thoughts show. He followed Miles Jacobs’s lead and asked, "I was just about to ask how the Frost family’s second son is doing these days."
Miles Jacobs didn’t know who the Frost family’s "second son" was, so he didn’t respond.
"Miles said that Russell is coming back," Rosalind Fairchild said, the smile at the corners of her lips deepening as she mentioned Russell Frost.
Julian Fairchild thought of Theodore Frost’s face. They hadn’t seen each other in years. Theodore Frost was about a decade older than him.
"Is that so? It’s about time he came back. That old man of the Frost family, Theodore Frost, has one foot in the grave. If the second son doesn’t return soon, he’ll be branded as unfilial."
"Indeed," Rosalind Fairchild said as she prepared the tea on the table. She pulled a dazed Miles Jacobs to sit and have a cup, then served one to Julian Fairchild.
"Dad, why have you been thinking about the Frost Family recently?" Rosalind Fairchild asked, feigning casualness.
"Yesterday, we were talking about your late sister-in-law, and it made me think of the Frost family’s youngest daughter."
The tea burned her lips, and she blew on it gently.
’Adriana Frost. It’s always Adriana Frost.’
"Oh," she replied, feigning indifference.
Julian Fairchild said, "Come over for dinner on New Year’s Day. Luna’s Mom is getting out of the hospital, and Luna and Blaze are married but haven’t formally met the family yet. Kai’s school should be on break too, right?"
Miles Jacobs was a bit surprised. Before he left on his trip, Blaze Fairchild was still caught up in a series of blind dates.
Not much time had passed, and now Blaze Fairchild was already married.
"Okay, Dad. We’ll bring Kai with us then. The whole family can ring in the new year together."
When Rosalind Fairchild heard "Luna’s Mom," her mind went blank. She always found the name "Jenna Axton" deeply unsettling.
They had a few more infusions of tea until the flavor grew weak. Then, she pulled Miles Jacobs up, preparing to leave.
"Dad, Miles still has work this afternoon, so we’ll be heading back now."
Julian Fairchild joked, "Not going to sit with your old dad a little longer?"
Rosalind Fairchild wrinkled her nose and said with playful disdain, "Nope. The tea’s all watered down."
Julian Fairchild waved his hand. "Go on, go on. You young people go have your fun."
The exchange between them warmed Miles Jacobs’s heart. "Dad, we’ll take our leave."
"Go on. Come back for the reunion."
"Alright."
Once they were in the car, Rosalind Fairchild clung to Miles Jacobs’s arm coquettishly. "Honey, you can go back by yourself. I have a nail appointment."
Miles Jacobs glanced at his secretary who was driving. With an outsider present, Rosalind Fairchild’s clinginess made him a little uncomfortable. He put on a serious expression and said, "Mm."
But Rosalind Fairchild just leaned in and whispered in his ear, "Honey, don’t be so stuffy."
Miles Jacobs’s face tensed. He squeezed Rosalind Fairchild’s hand, his eyes warning her to behave.
In Rosalind Fairchild’s eyes, this warning had no deterrent effect whatsoever.
Her well-manicured hand landed on Miles Jacobs’s thigh and began to move slowly.
Miles Jacobs sat bolt upright, grabbing her misbehaving hand with his other one. "Should I go with you?"
"Forget it. I can’t afford to have Deputy Director Jacobs accompany me. You go home and rest. Getting my nails done is boring and takes a long time. Just drop me off."
Rosalind Fairchild got out of the car. She waited for Miles Jacobs to leave first, but his car didn’t move.
’Heh. Men. All it takes is a little trick, and they fall for me completely.’
’Still, a gentleman like Russell is more charming, more... desirable. He makes me want to conquer him.’
Rosalind Fairchild turned and took a few steps into the mall. When she looked back, sure enough, the black Audi A6 was just starting to pull away.
She ordered a drink at a café and called her own driver.
While waiting, she reviewed the information she had on Luna Axton and Jenna Axton again.
’Jenna Axton. Whether she’s Adriana Frost or not, I have to go see her in person. Otherwise, this uncertainty will drive me crazy.’
’It’s even better that she’s sick and hospitalized. With Caleb always around Luna Axton, it’s inconvenient for me to do anything.’
’But Jenna Axton is Luna Axton’s only relative. If something were to happen to Jenna Axton...’
’Luna Axton would be devastated, right? And being devastated would affect the baby, wouldn’t it?’
’And if she couldn’t even keep the baby, then she’d be just like Susie.’
A cold, cruel smile formed on Rosalind Fairchild’s lips. She lifted her coffee cup and, in one gulp, destroyed the beautiful latte art.
Rosalind Fairchild went to the Hepatology Hospital. By claiming to be Luna Axton’s aunt at the nurses’ station, she easily found out Jenna Axton’s room number.
She pushed open the door and saw the person lying on the hospital bed.
It felt as if many years had passed, and yet, no time at all.
The person on the bed was the same as she had been years ago—fair-skinned, calm, and composed. Time had not left a single wrinkle on her face.
Jenna Axton was reading a book. She had assumed it was a nurse coming to change her IV, but after a long moment, she didn’t hear her name being called for verification.
She pulled her gaze away from her book and looked toward the door. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Compared to Rosalind Fairchild’s surprise, her reaction was far too placid, as if she had long expected this day to come.
Jenna Axton gave a faint smile. "Miss Fairchild, it’s been a long time."
