Chapter 150: Chapter 150: A Ghost This Handsome?

When Jenna Axton finally saw who it was, she smacked the arm Russell Frost had crossed over his chest. "You scared me to death."

In the dim light, Russell Frost raised a smug eyebrow. "Ever seen a ghost this handsome?"

Jenna Axton wanted to snap back at him, but she was afraid of waking her sleeping daughter. Instead, she pushed him toward the door, urging, "Come on, let’s go."

"I’m not done looking," Russell Frost said, his large frame planted immovably in the doorway.

The message was clear: he wasn’t done looking, and he wasn’t letting Jenna Axton leave either.

And so, the pair sat on the wooden floor, watching their precious daughter sleep soundly on the bed.

"Did you used to watch over her like this?" Russell Frost asked, his voice hushed.

"No. She’s been well-behaved and sensible since she was little, so I hardly ever had to worry. But the fact that I never had to worry is exactly what makes me feel like such an inadequate mother."

Jenna Axton had always known Luna was bound by a rope of her own making—one that neither she nor anyone else could untie.

But this time, upon her return, she had seen the one person who could untie that rope: Blaze Fairchild.

"When I was sick, our baby girl watched over me just like this. For more than two years, she’d look at me like this almost every night."

"Her head was so small, her hair was short, and she was so, so thin... her silhouette was just a narrow little sliver."

As the image surfaced in her mind, Jenna Axton’s eyes welled up, and tears began to stream uncontrollably down her cheeks.

Hearing the sob in her voice, Russell Frost pulled her into his arms, rubbing her shoulder comfortingly.

But the words that came out of his mouth managed to infuriate the already emotional Jenna Axton.

"If you start crying, you’ll wake Luna. And the two of us just sitting here... it’s a little creepy."

It was as if someone had installed a shut-off valve on Jenna Axton’s tear ducts. The tears stopped instantly, and she began to pound on Russell Frost’s chest.

His one sentence completely shattered her sorrowful mood.

Russell Frost let her hit him a few times. Only after she had vented her frustration did he speak. "Don’t worry. Our daughter’s life will only get better from here on out. The hard times are over for good." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

The two sat for a while longer, until their legs grew numb. They finally stood up, leaning on the wall with hunched backs as they shuffled out, one after the other.

CLICK. The moment the door closed, the person on the bed opened her eyes.

Tear tracks stained the corners of Luna Axton’s eyes. Her ear and the pillow beneath it were damp, but her lips were curved into a smile.

’So this is how Mom and Dad are when they’re together. So happy.’

’If Mom and Dad are happy, then even if we don’t live together, I can feel their happiness too.’

「The next morning.」

Everyone in the Frost Family was gathered around the dining table.

Even though Luna Axton knew her parents had been sitting on her bedroom floor for over twenty minutes the night before, she pretended to be oblivious and focused on her breakfast.

"I’m taking Luna and Jenna out for a walk later. We won’t be back for lunch."

Russell Frost announced his plans while everyone was present.

This way, his sister-in-law, May Ford, wouldn’t have to go to the trouble of making them lunch.

His sister-in-law had been working hard to feed the whole family for the past couple of days; she had to be tired.

"And for dinner, does everyone want to eat at home or go out?"

Ethan Frost glanced at his grandfather, then at his own parents. When no one else had a preference, he spoke up. "Let’s get barbecue. I’m craving it."

Russell Frost turned to the man at the head of the table. "Dad, what about you?"

Theodore Frost didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze fell upon Luna Axton, who was quietly and dutifully eating her breakfast. "Luna, is there anything you’d like to have?"

Luna Axton swallowed her food and was just about to speak when Ethan Frost cut in.

He whined like a child, "Oh, come on! You all only care about my little sister now. The second she comes back, nobody cares about my preferences! Now that I have a sister, does that mean I, the big brother, don’t even deserve to have a barbecue?"

He was already jealous enough after yesterday’s breakfast. Now they even had to ask Luna’s opinion about barbecue.

His little sister had stolen all his thunder.

May Ford gave him a light pat on the back, a motherly warning in her tone. "Don’t you start competing with your sister."

’Her sister has suffered so much. Now that she’s back, what’s wrong with the whole family giving her a little extra care and attention?’

A warm feeling spread through Luna Axton’s heart.

She knew her brother was just being a drama king; he didn’t actually feel like she’d stolen anything from him.

’If he were really that petty, how could he have earned a reputation for being as humble, polite, and refined as his father in his social dealings?’

"Barbecue, hmm..." She put on a thoughtful expression, deliberately teasing Ethan Frost.

"Don’t even think about it. Your husband would never let you eat that!" Ethan Frost scoffed, his words dripping with the disappointment of his dashed barbecue dreams.

They had all seen firsthand just how strict Ian was with Luna’s diet back when she was interning at Concordia Medical Hall.

"I don’t have to eat it, you know." Luna Axton blinked, her expression a playful and adorable mix of triumph in their sibling rivalry. "If you want it, our family can go to the little villa at Veridian Lake for a barbecue."

The Veridian Lake property was something Grandpa Fairchild had transferred into her name. It was just over 40 kilometers from Valoria, making it very convenient for short weekend stays or small get-togethers.

Though the house was now in her name, and she received regular reports from the Veridian Lake property management and the building manager, she had never actually been there to see it in person.

This was the perfect opportunity for the whole family to go over for a barbecue.

When Luna Axton saw the smile return to Ethan Frost’s face, she knew he was satisfied with the arrangement.

She turned to her grandfather. "Is that alright with you, Grandpa?"

Once Luna’s suggestion was put to their grandfather for his opinion, it was pretty much a done deal.

Just as everyone expected, he said, "You young people can handle the arrangements. I’ll try something new as well."

He was an academician who enjoyed spending time with young people and hearing their thoughts, so of course he was willing.

"Great. Then those of you who have work can head off. The three of us will get the ingredients, and we’ll go over there after lunch to prepare," Russell finalized.

"Wait," May Ford cut in. "Since it’s a barbecue, shouldn’t we invite Blaze and Mr. Fairchild?" She reminded them that Luna still had a husband and Grandpa Fairchild to consider.

The moment May Ford said the word "Wait," the corner of Luna Axton’s eye started twitching.

"He has work scheduled for tomorrow, so there’s no need to call him." She hadn’t wanted Blaze Fairchild to come in the first place, and it just so happened he really did have work.

"Oh? Work is for the daytime. A barbecue is a family meal. We should invite Blaze and Mr. Fairchild."

May Ford admitted that while the good-looking young couple was a feast for the eyes, she wanted Blaze to join for reasons beyond that.

Everyone could see how much Blaze adored Luna.

The young couple hadn’t seen each other yesterday, so a barbecue today was the perfect opportunity for them to spend time together and for the whole family to gather.

"Fine, I’ll let him know in a bit." ’I’ll do my part and inform him,’ she thought. ’Whether he actually comes is up to Blaze.’

"Then it’s settled," Russell Frost declared. "Everyone, give me a list of at least three things you want to eat, or else you’ll be stuck eating what other people like tonight."

After breakfast, the family members with jobs left for work, while Jenna Axton’s family of three, tasked with preparing the barbecue ingredients and nurturing their bond, also drove off.

Russell Frost drove while Jenna Axton sat in the passenger seat, tapping a shopping list into her phone’s notes app.

Luna Axton sat alone in the back, her eyes sparkling as she watched the two in the front seats.

’So this is how Lindsey feels every time she goes out with her mom and dad—so relaxed and happy.’

’No wonder Lindsey starts planning and getting excited from the moment she finds out they’re going somewhere!’

"Sweetheart, you walked so much yesterday. How are your legs feeling?"

Russell Frost noticed her in the rearview mirror, her gaze fixed on him and Jenna, so he broke the silence.

For a moment, Luna Axton didn’t realize that her dad’s "sweetheart" was directed at her.

It only clicked when her mom turned around to look at her.

"I’m fine after a night’s sleep. I don’t feel sore anywhere."

She was in excellent physical shape, a benefit of all the running around during her part-time jobs and the yoga and Pilates classes she had rarely missed since her pregnancy.

"Alright. If you start to feel tired later, make sure you tell your mom and me," Russell said.

"I will, Dad," she replied obediently.

Her mood grew even brighter, and as she looked out the window, everything seemed tinged with happiness.

The trees were happy, the wind was happy, even a little dog being walked on a leash seemed happy.

Jenna Axton, who was organizing the shopping list, looked up. "There’s an old, well-established seafood shop in Summit Plaza. Let’s go get some oysters; my sister-in-law loves them."
