Chapter 157: Maria, The Pregnant Cousin!

After a few minutes, Marco was done with his arrangement in the study, the papers neatly folded and tucked into a drawer for later. The room was quiet, with the only sound being the faint tick of a clock on the wall and the distant hum of the chopper starting up on the roof. He locked the drawer carefully, turning the key with a soft click, and stood up slowly, his joints aching a bit from sitting too long.

He adjusted his walking stick, gripping the handle firmly, and stepped out of the study into the wide hallway. As he turned toward the elevator, he saw his granddaughters approaching down the hall. Bianca and Sofia walked slowly, their steps hesitant, faces showing the weariness from their time in the cell. Marco wanted to walk away as his mind was already on the safe house and the chance to see Elias... but he stopped, leaning on his stick for support, and decided to listen to what they had to say.

He stood there, expression unchanging, as they came closer, the hallway light casting long shadows behind them.

The girls pretended they didn’t overhear what he was saying earlier in the study as they kept their eyes down, acting like they were just coming to check on him or pay their respects as expected.

"Grandpa," Bianca said first, her voice soft and respectful as they greeted him with small bows, hands clasped in front like they were approaching royalty.

Sofia added, "Good morning, Grandpa. We hope you’re feeling well today."

Marco nodded slightly, his eyes sharp as he waited for them to get to the point. He leaned a bit more on his stick, the wood creaking faintly under his weight.

Bianca took a deep breath, her hands fidgeting slightly at her sides as she gathered her words. "We’re sorry... for everything. The chase, the disrespect, all of it. We were wrong, and we know that now."

Sofia nodded beside her, her voice quieter but steady. "Please forgive us. We promise it won’t happen again. We’ve learned from it."

Marco just waved his hand dismissively, as there was no hint of forgiveness or anger on his face, just indifference.

"Leave. Go rest or whatever you need to do."

The girls exchanged quick glances, a mix of relief that it was over and lingering shame from the cold response. They nodded hurriedly. "Yes, Grandpa. Thank you."

As they started to turn away, Marco added in a firm tone, his voice low but clear, "And stay away from Elias. If you try to mess with him again, I won’t care if you’re related... I’ll punish you myself. Understand?"

They nodded again, eyes wide with a touch of fear at the warning. "We understand, Grandpa. We won’t go near him."

"Good. Now go."

They left quickly, turning the corner without looking back, their footsteps fading down the hall as they hurried away.

As soon as the girls turned away, Marco headed to the roof, his walking stick as he took the private elevator up. When he got there, the chopper sat ready, the pilot in the cockpit checking the instruments one last time. The wind up there was stronger as he boarded without delay. The guard helped him buckle in before stepping back, giving a nod. The rotors sped up and the chopper lifted off smoothly, the estate shrinking below as it headed to the safe house to see Elias. Marco looked out the window with his mind racing with thoughts of Elias.

Bianca and Sofia groaned as they headed downstairs. Their legs felt like lead from lack of rest, bodies aching from the hard benches at the station where they’d barely slept.

"That was humiliating," Bianca muttered, her voice low as they descended the stairs, the family noise growing louder below.

Sofia rubbed her eyes, blinking against the fatigue. "At least it’s done. He didn’t yell or anything. Now, let’s go find some food... then forty-eight hours of sleep. I feel like I could hibernate through the whole winter if I close my eyes."

They headed to the kitchen, hoping for something quick and easy to grab... maybe leftover bread or fruit... to tide them over until they could crash in their rooms. But as they entered the large kitchen, they met someone else dicing fruits on a tray at the main counter. The room was busy with servants preparing lunch... but the person at the counter was family. Bianca smirked as she recognized her... their pregnant cousin, Maria, who was a few years younger, standing there with a bowl, carefully cutting apples and bananas into neat, bite....sized pieces. Maria looked up, her belly showing clearly under her loose maternity dress, her hair tied back simply to keep it out of the way.

Sofia folded her arms across her chest, watching from the doorway as Bianca approached with a sweet, fake smile plastered on her face. "Hey, cousin Maria. How are you holding up today?"

Maria smiled back, setting the knife down for a moment to wipe her hands on a towel.

"I’m doing well, thanks. And you two? You two must be tired since you just got back, I heard from the staff."

Bianca raised an eyebrow, leaning casually on the counter beside her, watching the knife slice through an apple. "How many months along now? You’re glowing... looking good despite the extra weight."

Maria hesitated, her hand resting on her belly instinctively, the knife pausing over the fruit. She didn’t want to answer... the family had been poking and prodding at her pregnancy enough, with their questions and sideways looks... but Bianca added quickly, her voice all concern, "No need to tell if you don’t want to. It’s fine. Anything for your safety... rest, eat well, all that good stuff."

While Bianca acted all sweet and nice, her voice soft and concerned like she genuinely cared about Maria’s well-being, Sofia knew what her sister was up to from the sidelines. She knew there was no way Bianca would be that kind to anyone without a hidden motive... usually, it was to dig for information, make a point, or twist the knife in a subtle way that left the other person uncomfortable.

She’s just good with pretending to be nice to people so she can hurt them later.
