Ok, so if you were expecting this fort town to be filled with interesting people and stuff happening all around… Then you would be completely mistaken.

The place is literally just a normal fort town with dwellings for the people living and working there, a few shops and markets set up by the merchants, then some bars and food stores and that's about it.

They did not seem to have any specialties from what I can see and even the entertainment options were limited.

Ok, the last part was a little bit of a lie… The entertainment options weren't just limited, it was practically nonexistent as far as I could tell…

I mean, the only entertainment that I could see were just the pubs where people would go drinking… And I guess to also fuck…

There were a few slave stores but when I tried to go and visit them just to see what they were like, I was asked if I had an invitation and was turned away when they realised I didn't have one.

In other words, I was already bored not even an hour after I started walking around the fort town…

Sure, I get that this place wasn't supposed to be some trading hub but what do the people here even do for entertainment?

On second thought, don't answer that question because I just realised what they would be doing absent all other things…

I was so bored that Katsuki decided to speak up about it, "Mistress… If I may be allowed to suggest… Perhaps you could take a flight out into the desert?"

I tilted my head at the suggestion, "You mean into the Oligarchy? What for, though?"

"You might be able to spot caravans and Mercenary parties engaged in battle with monsters or bandits out in the desert, Mistress."

"Ohhh~ Then I could go and help them!"

"I was thinking that it would make for a much better spectacle than what this fort town has to offer, Mistress."

Oh. She's saying that I should just fly overhead and just watch it happen. That's cold, Katsuki… And you're even a fire mage too.

Well, I guess anything beats just wandering around this boring place… And I'm not that keen on watching others boinking each other especially when I'm not involved in the action.

Ahem… Moving on…

"In that case, wanna fly with me, Katsuki?" I asked.

Katsuki quickly bowed her head, "I would not dare, Mistress. Please go on ahead without me."

"Ehhh… I thought for sure that Katsuki would be joining me on this flight…"

"That would be improper of me, Mistress. How could I trouble Mistress to carry me?"

"Well, I don't really mind?"

"If Mistress would like me to join you, I could simply just run on the ground while Mistress flies overhead."

Katsuki… That's just sad…

Give me a moment then…

I gestured for her to follow me and we went into a dark alleyway behind several buildings.

I checked that there was no one around before calling up Eins from my shadow.

"Master," She greeted me with a bow.

I didn't even need to say anything as she immediately turned to Katsuki and stretched out her hands before a pair of wings popped out from her back.

Katsuki understood what I was trying to do and did not complain as she stepped towards my Shadow Guard.

Once Eins had a hold of Katsuki, I let my own wings pop out from my back as well before shooting up into the air with Eins following closely behind me.

I then angled myself towards the direction of the desert and started flying towards it.

Oh~ It's been a while since I've flown out like this~

And the fact that it's a desert in front of me meant that I could see the entire landscape with nothing blocking my view as far as I could see.

From this height, I could already see several dots in the distance which were travellers either moving towards or away from the fort.

Interestingly, just like the scene at Sands Border Town, I could see where the land turns into a desert where the green part of the ground changes to brown in colour.

I can also see that there's a road leading out from the fort towards the desert but it stops just short of the desert.

I idly wondered if this was done on purpose from the Kingdom to show the Oligarchy up?

Still, despite there not being an established road into the desert, there was a trail of dots that seemed to be moving in a relatively orderly line while curving around the sand dunes that reached the fort.

It's almost like there's an invisible route that they could see or something.

As though already knowing that I would be curious about it, Katsuki made Eins fly over to me and started explaining.

"They have a tamed beast called a Dune Bison that is able to travel and navigate through the desert. They mainly do so by location memory where the beasts are able to remember the location of somewhere that they have been to before and would always know the safest route to travel to that location. Thus, young Dune Bisons would follow a pack to help them memorise the location before they are used as pack beasts."

Oh, that's pretty cool~

I narrowed my eyes to try and spot one of the beasts in question and sure enough, there was at least one in every group I see travelling through the desert right now.

But the appearance of the beast was definitely not what I expected…

For something called a Dune 'Bison', I was expecting to see some kind of bull or something similar but instead, what I see is a giant lizard that kind of looked like the Ground Dragons I've seen back in the Frostiminir Kingdom.

The difference is that these were smaller and had smooth, dull skin which kind of resembled a gecko from my old World.

I'm too high up to see any other details but I already think it looks kind of cute.

Wait… I just realised something…

I looked at Katsuki, "When you say that they would know the 'safest' route… What are the threats that they would face while in the desert?"

"There's plenty of monsters in the desert, Mistress. And I'm not just talking about bandits and illegal slavers either, like that group over there."

Eh?

I turned to look in the direction of where Katsuki was pointing and I realised there was a large dust cloud that was travelling straight towards the trail of travellers that was still unaware of the threat as a sand dune was blocking their sight of the bandits.

"Ah… That's… A lot of bandits…" I muttered. Continue your adventure at novelbuddy

Judging by the size of the dust cloud, I think there were at least a hundred or so of them that were charging towards the travellers.

And from the silhouettes within the dust cloud, they seem to be riding on some kind of beast as well to increase their speed.

That's already several times more than the small group that was in the direct path of where the bandits were charging towards.

Just as I was wondering how the bandits even knew where to attack considering there was a giant sand dune blocking their line of sight, I heard a shrill cry coming from above and I looked up.

That was a mistake as I ended up looking almost directly at the sun but thankfully I did see the silhouette of something diving towards me from the sun.

Katsuki reacted faster than I did as she pulled out several throwing knives and threw them in the direction of the silhouette without looking at it.

The shrill cry was suddenly cut off before a scream could be heard.

The figure ended up being some Mahun riding on a giant bird as it fell right past us, the Mahun screaming and flailing his arms in a futile attempt to try and remain airborne.

While he was falling, I did manage to use [Screened] on him to see who that was and the moment I saw 'Bandit' and 'Illegal Slaver' in his titles, I lost interest in him and just watched him fall to his death.

He hit the sand with a thud, throwing up a dust cloud that got the attention of some of the travellers nearby.

I looked up again and squinted my eyes, shielding my eyes from the sun to see several more bandits riding on giant birds flying high up in the air.

That explains how they were able to coordinate the bandits down below I guess.

Instead of worrying about the travellers that were going to be attacked by the bandits down there, I now found myself a target of the airborne bandits as they all tilted towards my direction and dove towards me.

Seriously, what the heck is this bandit group?! They even have their own air force when they go raiding?!
