Chapter 68: Back In With A Bunny Guide

Thankfully, no one asked any questions when I emerged from my room and we headed directly to the portal. Ava was also acting like nothing happened so I played along and said nothing as well.

I guess she managed to explain away why she was even in my room and no one found it weird.

Maylene was even more excitable today and she was practically bouncing around the place as she followed us.

Apparently she learned a lot from whatever the tablet showed her and she was now really interested in seeing how we were handling the Anomalies.

Yeah, she had switched from calling them Rock Munchers to Anomalies already. I guess the learning package does cover a little bit of everything so she can integrate into our society as quickly as possible.

Though I should give her some credit for being able to learn that quickly as well.

"Qing! Qing!! So you’re the leader of this group, right?!" Maylene asked excitedly while hopping up and down, her bunny ears flopping cutely.

I hesitated for just a moment before nodding, "You could say so, yes."

"Cooool~ So everyone here is from different worlds?"

"Not everyone actually. I am from this World. So is Jia Lian and Sergei over there."

"So cool! So this World is known as a Sanctuary World and it lets people from other Worlds that are being invaded by Anomalies to seek shelter?"

"That’s pretty much it, yes."

She paused, "Umm... Are there any requirements for a certain group to seek shelter here?"

"I believe there are some requirements and rules but... I don’t think anyone would be turned away at the get go. At the very least, if another group of refugees show up, we would at least shelter them for a time. We aren’t the only Sanctuary World here after all so if our world isn’t suitable for them, they would be sent to another World instead."

"So... These Anomalies... They have been here for a very long time?"

"On Earth? It’s been what? Five years I guess? But they have been around and terrorising other planets for a while, yes."

Maylene looked a little bit thoughtful until she paused when she saw the portal that we were heading towards.

We had a briefing, with Olivia included, this morning that we would be doing an extended recon today with Maylene as our guide. So we had to prepare supplies to stay overnight in the rift.

It would be preferable if we could return before nightfall but it was still better to prepare for that possibility in case we find ourselves needing to stay there.

The reason why Maylene was guiding us was due to the fact that in their colony, she was basically the only bunny girl who would go out into the tunnels to map out safe routes and also to scavenge for supplies, meaning she was quite familiar with the tunnels up until the place they called the Dark Wastes.

Apparently it’s one of the deepest parts of the tunnel and it was a place that no one who had dove into had returned before. Which is why everyone stays away from there in particular.

And the reason why Maylene was chosen for that role in their colony was the fact that her awakened power had something to do with increased speeds which allowed her to travel around the tunnels quickly and evade any Anomalies that might have spotted her.

But since this time we aren’t planning to run away from any Anomalies we might come across...

"If you have second thoughts about this..." I trailed off.

Maylene shook her head, "No... I... I only just realised how big the world... The universe was... To think that just yesterday, the only thing I knew were just tunnels. I had thought that anything outside the tunnels was a different world altogether."

And yet, they somehow still managed to invent modern and borderline sci-fi machines despite that. Funny how things work.

She sucked in a breath before letting it out and giving me a nod, "Don’t worry, Qing! I’ll be a proper guide for you!"

I have to reiterate, this is a bunny girl that was a shortstack where the top of her head barely reached to the height of my waist.

She definitely looked cute.

"We’ll be counting on you then."

"Alright! Let’s go then!" 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Maylene was just about to jump into the portal before I stopped her, "Wait. I’ll go in first, you’ll follow the rest in."

She seemed confused by my request but obeyed.

I straightened myself and stepped into the portal, my guard raised just in case there was an Anomaly on the other side.

We might have cleared this place yesterday but nothing was stopping more Anomalies from wandering to the portal and stationing themselves outside of it, ready to pounce on the next person that came through it.

Sure enough, when I stepped through the portal, three Anomalies were standing just a short distance away.

Instead of the bunny girl sized Anomalies, these were human sized so I assume they were other creatures from other parts of the tunnel that had been mutated.

I idly wondered if there were other civilisations also hiding within the tunnels like what the rabbit girls were doing.

Perhaps we might want to do a sweep of the tunnels to make sure before we cut this place off, just in case.

I guess it also depends on whether the bunny girls want to immigrate to our World as well I suppose.

Wait, why am I thinking about all this stuff right now? There’s two Anomalies right in front of me.

I dashed towards them and... Woah?!!

The distance between the Anomaly and I shortened faster than I expected and it also seemed like I had jumped further than I intended.

I ended up crashing straight into the Anomaly and flinging both the Anomaly and myself towards the wall on the other side.

Thankfully, most of my momentum transferred to the Anomaly and I managed to stop myself a few feet away while the Anomaly flew the rest of the way and crashed into the wall, breaking into pieces as its rock armour shattered from the impact.

Damn... I’m pretty sure this is from my most recent breakthrough after my dual cultivation session with Ava... I’m going to need to learn to control my powers again...

I spun around right as I saw the rest of my Guardians stepping through alongside Maylene.

Trusting one of the Anomalies to them, I jumped after the second Anomaly and tried to use less strength this time.

Unfortunately, it seems like I had still used too much as I ended up jumping over the Anomaly and landed behind it.

The only good thing was that the Anomaly had been trying to turn around to face me so it looked like I had done this on purpose to place myself behind him again.

I punched my fist towards the back of the Anomaly’s head and... Hmm? It felt like my fist had brushed against something that felt like paper and the top half of the Anomaly had disappeared.

The bottom half wobbled for a moment before it tumbled forward to land on the ground with a soft thud.

I turned back to look at my Guardians and it seems like Jia Lian was the one who dispatched the last Anomaly as her sword that was wrapped in the light of her arcane construct ability.

Maylene was looking in my direction in awe, which I guess was not surprising since I just dispelled all her doubts that I was able to beat these creatures with my bare hands.

I turned to nod at her, "Maylene? If you would?"

She quickly recovered and pointed at the tunnels ahead of us, "Follow me!"

Right now, our destination would be to check out the so-called Dark Wastes to have a better idea of what we’re dealing with.

No doubt, the Gatekeeper should most likely be somewhere there and if there were Mana Crystals, they would most likely have formed around there as well.

As we got ready to arrange ourselves behind her, the bunny girl suddenly leapt away and ran off into the tunnels, disappearing as a blur before any of us could react.

We were thus left standing there and looking at the empty space that had been occupied by Maylene with a dumbfounded expression on our faces.

Jia Lian poked her fingers together, "I think... She doesn’t know we can’t run as fast as she can?"

Leena turned to her, "Didn’t we already tell her that earlier in the morning?"

"She might have forgotten," Olivia sighed before turning to me. "My Lord, your orders?"

I was about to suggest we just head in the direction of the centre tunnel before another blur came rushing towards us to stop in front of me.

An embarrassed looking Maylene bowed her head towards us, "I’m sorry! I got used to running on my own and I forgot! Umm... I’ll be sure to lead all of you at a slower pace!!"

Her ears were even drooping a little...

Well... No harm done, Maylene. We’ll still be depending on you here.
