Wedding Night: My Disabled Husband Made Me Cry-Chapter 39: Let’s Get Divorced
Vivian Quinn composed herself and said, "I’m sorry, Mrs. Sterling, but I won’t sign."
"What right do you have to refuse?"
"It’s true I wasn’t actually pregnant, but it wasn’t my scheme. I thought I had really conceived."
"You might be able to fool others with that story, but you can’t fool me." Wendy Reeves smiled. "You just think the money’s not enough, don’t you? I’ve always been generous. Name your price. Just make sure you weigh your own worth before you do."
Vivian Quinn smiled. "Ten million is certainly a lot of money, but I don’t think Jett Sterling wants to divorce me."
"So you’re confident. You think you have my son right where you want him. Surely you don’t think that just because my son is in a wheelchair, the standards for the Sterling family’s Young Madam can be lowered, do you, Miss Quinn?"
"I never thought that. And I know it sounds cliché to say ’our marriage is our own business,’ but a divorce requires Jett Sterling’s own approval, doesn’t it?"
"You don’t actually believe Jett would fall for you, do you?" Wendy Reeves’s expression turned a few shades colder. "I may not know why Jett was willing to marry you, but when it comes to a choice between you and his own mother, there’s no question he’ll choose me."
"I hear you’re a student at Aethelgard University, so you should understand what it means to be out of your league. I came to you today to offer you a graceful exit by letting you sign first. But since you’ve chosen the hard way over the easy way, you can just wait for Jett to dump you."
Vivian Quinn gave a faint smile. "If Jett Sterling and I do get a divorce, it will be because we can no longer make it work, not because of your pressure. Rest assured, Mrs. Sterling. If we do divorce, I won’t take a single cent. I’ll save the Sterling family ten million."
Wendy Reeves’s face turned icy. "Then just you wait!"
After Wendy Reeves left, Vivian Quinn sat in the living room for a long while before finally taking the divorce papers upstairs.
It had started raining outside at some point. Lightning flashed and thunder rolled as the sky grew as gloomy as if it were covered in a layer of ink.
Vivian Quinn hated weather like this. Her chest felt tight, and she didn’t even eat dinner.
...
It was already past nine in the evening when Jett Sterling returned home.
When he entered the master bedroom, he found Vivian Quinn curled up alone on the sofa, hugging her knees and staring blankly at the floor.
"What’s wrong?" Jett Sterling approached her. "Didn’t you go to the hospital to see your sister today? Why do you look so upset?"
Vivian Quinn slowly raised her head to look at the man before her. "I saw Rachel Quinn at the hospital today."
Jett Sterling seemed unconcerned. "I’ve told you before, I can handle the Quinn family and the Grant Family for you. You’re the one who didn’t want me to interfere. Vivian, I don’t want you to be upset over people like them."
"I’m not finished." Vivian Quinn sat up straight, her lips pressed into a thin line. "I was feeling a little unwell, and I was worried Rachel Quinn might have done something to me, so I went for a check-up. The doctor told me I’d been given a drug that delays one’s period."
Jett Sterling froze.
Vivian Quinn’s brow furrowed. "That reaction... you’re admitting it, aren’t you? It was you. While we were estranged, you had someone put that drug in my food to create the illusion that I was pregnant. You wanted to trap me with a pregnancy to make me marry you. Am I right?"
The man closed his eyes, his voice hoarse. "Vivian, please, let me explain..."
"What is there to explain!" The emotions Vivian Quinn had suppressed all evening finally exploded, and she began to tremble uncontrollably. "Jett Sterling, are you proud of yourself? Do you feel like some master strategist who has everything under control? You must have been thrilled when I was the one who proposed marriage, weren’t you?"
"But don’t you know? The thing I hate most in this world is being lied to! Especially being lied to about a child! You knew perfectly well how much family and blood ties mean to me, yet you chose to deceive me with exactly that!"
"Vivian, you’ve never truly loved someone." Jett Sterling’s eyes were filled with a shattering pain. "If you love someone, you do everything in your power to have them."
Vivian Quinn shook her head. "No, Jett Sterling. Don’t you dare hide behind the banner of ’love’ and act like you’re so noble! Rachel Quinn ’loves’ Austin Grant, so she stops at nothing to scheme against me and harm me. And Austin Grant ’loves’ Rachel Quinn, so he’s perfectly fine with trampling all over my pain to be with her!"
"In my eyes, people like you are terrifying. You disgust me!"
"I’m not like them!" The man’s voice was pained and strained. "Vivian, I never wanted to hurt you. Even with the drug, I made sure to use one with the most minimal side effects, one that wouldn’t harm your body. I just wanted you to marry me."
"So I’m supposed to thank you?" Vivian Quinn let out a bitter laugh as tears finally broke free and streamed down her face. "Jett Sterling, I truly cannot comprehend this. It’s a lie. It’s deception. You used my deepest vulnerability to trick me, all to achieve your own goal!"
"Do you have any idea how much I was looking forward to having that child? Do you know how devastated I was when I found out I wasn’t pregnant? Of course you don’t. You were just happy, because you’d already gotten what you wanted!"
"Vivian, it wasn’t like that!" Jett Sterling rushed in front of her, gripping her shoulders. "That’s not what I was thinking. I knew you were heartbroken, and I felt terrible too. It was my fault. You can hit me, yell at me, whatever you want!"
Vivian Quinn’s tears flowed even faster. "No wonder you apologized to me back then. I was so stupid. I didn’t even stop to think about what you were apologizing for."
She laughed self-deprecatingly. "I guess it’s my fault, too. If I had just gone to the hospital for a blood test or an ultrasound, I wouldn’t have been so completely fooled by you! I, Vivian Quinn, must be a total idiot to be tricked and manipulated by liars like you time and time again!"
"Vivian, please don’t be like this!" Jett Sterling watched her, his expression pained. "I was wrong. Please, forgive me this one time. I’ll never lie to you again, I promise."
"I can’t trust you anymore." Vivian Quinn pushed his hands away and roughly wiped her tears. She grabbed the divorce papers from the coffee table and held them out to him. "I can’t accept a marriage that started with a lie. So, Jett Sterling, let’s get a divorce."
The man’s pupils constricted. "Vivian, what did you just say?"
"I said, we’re getting a divorce." Vivian Quinn enunciated each word, her voice cold and resolute. "I don’t want to be entangled with you any longer. Let’s end it here."
"I won’t allow it." Jett Sterling’s fingertips trembled. His hands gripped the armrests of his wheelchair, his knuckles turning white. "Vivian, I will absolutely never divorce you."
"My mind is made up. Even if you don’t agree, I’m not changing it. If we can’t have a divorce by mutual consent, then I’ll sue for it!"
Vivian Quinn tossed the divorce papers onto his lap and stood up to leave.
She had only taken two steps when a large hand seized her wrist.
Before Vivian Quinn could react, she staggered and fell into the man’s embrace.
"Jett Sterling, what are you—mmph..."
The rest of her words were smothered by the man’s kiss.
