Wealthy Beauty in the 60s-Chapter 447 - 449 Tragic
Gao Guoqiang left Old Lady Gao at the front door. Gao Guofu’s family hadn’t gotten up yet when Gao Guoqiang said, "You can call me unfilial or hate me; I don’t care anymore. From now on, don’t come looking for me. Just pretend you don’t have a son like me."
After saying that, Gao Guoqiang walked away with Gao Jiazhi.
Old Lady Gao watched Gao Guoqiang’s receding figure for a long while before she finally diverted her gaze. When she tried to go back inside, she realized she couldn’t enter; she pushed at the door, but it was locked from the inside.
By now, it was already daylight, but Gao Guofu, Lin Xuebi, even Yang Hua, and Gao Jianmin were all still enjoying a lazy sleep-in.
Old Lady Gao herself had already been through a lot that morning. At this point, she was tired, hungry, and thirsty. After sitting for a while, she found herself lacking energy and her vision blurring.
"Guofu, open the door, Guofu, open the door," Old Lady Gao began calling at the entrance.
Inside, Gao Guofu woke up and was about to get out of bed when Lin Xuebi pressed him back down, "Why get up so early? Just ignore your mother’s fuss and go back to sleep."
"Go open the door for her," said Gao Guofu.
Lin Xuebi pouted, "Let her stay outside for a while; nothing will happen. She went out before dawn and didn’t even lock the door; it’s fortunate nothing bad happened. We were all sleeping soundly; if someone had come into our house to harm us, we wouldn’t have known."
Lin Xuebi got up to use the restroom and saw that the front door was not bolted. Seeing that Old Lady Gao was not in her room, she became angry and immediately bolted the front door.
Yang Hua and Gao Jianmin had also heard the noise. Gao Jianmin said, "It’s so annoying, I’ll go check."
Yang Hua said, "Check what? Grandma is calling for Dad, not for you."
"Guofu, Jianmin," Old Lady Gao continued to knock and call out at the door, tears already streaming from her eyes.
Then the door creaked open; it was Gao Jianmin’s eldest son, Gao Dazhuang, who opened the door. Gao Dazhuang and Xia Xiao’s younger brother Xia Hua were the same age, both fourteen years old this year.
As soon as Gao Dazhuang opened the door, Old Lady Gao, caught unawares, stumbled inside. Gao Dazhuang, supporting Old Lady Gao, said, "Grandma, why are you outside? You didn’t spend the whole night out there, did you?"
"Dazhuang, Dazhuang," Old Lady Gao sobbed, her heart thinking that she hadn’t doted on this great-grandson in vain. Thinking of her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren and granddaughter-in-law, Old Lady Gao felt somewhat chilled to the bone.
"Grandma, I’m hungry," said Gao Dazhuang.
Old Lady Gao hastily responded, "Okay, okay, Grandma will make you something to eat." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
At that point, Old Lady Gao’s spirits were instantly rejuvenated; her head no longer swam, her eyes no longer blurred, and she turned and went to the kitchen to make something to eat for Gao Dazhuang.
Although Gao Dazhuang was the eldest grandson, he had younger brothers and sisters. When he was born, he was the most doted on, but as his younger siblings came along, the affection for Gao Dazhuang was divided among them.
And Old Lady Gao was someone who always placed great importance on the eldest son, showering him with love.
Gao Guoqiang’s older brother was the favored one, but he had died. Guofu was the cherished youngest son, Gao Jianmin the adored eldest grandson, and Gao Dazhuang the beloved great-grandson.
Whenever Old Lady Gao had something delicious, she would give it to Gao Dazhuang first. Naturally, Gao Dazhuang felt closer to her, but his siblings did not care for the old and ugly grandmother with a wrinkled face.
As Old Lady Gao went in to cook, Gao Dazhuang came over to help light the fire, sharing a moment of warmth between the two.
But as Gao Guofu, Lin Xuebi, Gao Jianmin, and Yang Hua each got up, Yang Hua saw her eldest son helping Old Lady Gao cook in the kitchen and immediately went over, grabbed Gao Dazhuang by the ear, and dragged him out of the kitchen.
"Mom, it hurts, it hurts," Gao Dazhuang pleaded. Though his name was Dazhuang, meaning strong and robust, he was ironically slender and not as sturdy as his younger siblings.
"Are you asking for a beating? Go and study now," Yang Hua shouted and then cursed, "Who else is as stupid as you? Fourteen years old and still in third grade, attending the same school as your younger brother. You’ve completely embarrassed me."
"I don’t want to study anymore," Gao Dazhuang said. He never liked studying to begin with.
Yang Hua said, "If you don’t study, what can you do? You can’t recognize a single word." After all, coming from the city as an educated youth, Yang Hua naturally hoped her sons would be literate. They didn’t need a high level of education, but at least enough to get by.
However, Gao Dazhuang’s performance was poor, and he didn’t like studying. Gao Guofu, Lin Xuebi, Gao Jianmin, and Yang Hua had all initially had high hopes for Gao Dazhuang but eventually shifted their expectations to his younger brother.
And Gao Dazhuang really didn’t want to study. He had protested to his family countless times. Gao Guofu didn’t particularly care, but Lin Xuebi, Yang Hua, and even Gao Jianmin insisted that Gao Dazhuang study, and for this, he had been beaten more than once.
Old Lady Gao couldn’t help but feel sorry for her great-grandson when she saw him getting hit, "Why are you hitting him? He hasn’t done anything wrong. It’s the same if he goes to study after he’s had his meal."
Just as Yang Hua slapped Gao Dazhuang’s arm, Old Lady Gao hurried over to stop her but unexpectedly got hit in the face herself, and stumbled backward, crashing into a long bench.
Old Lady Gao cried out in pain and then screamed, followed by a muffled groan.
Gao Dazhuang hurried to support Old Lady Gao, and Yang Hua, helping her up, scolded, "Grandma, are you senile? What business is it of yours if I discipline Dazhuang? If you get hurt, it’s not my fault."
At that moment, Old Lady Gao had indeed fractured her hip and the pain caused her to faint.
"Grandma!" Gao Dazhuang exclaimed in shock.
Gao Guofu, Lin Xuebi, and Gao Jianmin all looked over. Gao Guofu said, "We need to get her to a hospital quickly."
"What hospital? Do you think it’s free? Just take her to the clinic and have a look," Lin Xuebi said.
A light bulb went off in Yang Hua’s head, "Grandma can’t be like this. If her hip is broken and she can’t move, she’ll have to lie down all the time. Who will take care of her?"
Following Yang Hua’s words, it was clear that Lin Xuebi certainly wouldn’t be the one to care for her, and thus she said no more.
Gao Jianmin said, "I’ll go borrow a cart to take Grandma to the hospital."
Yang Hua immediately turned to Gao Guofu, "Dad, Jianmin and I don’t have any money. Dad, please take out some money to treat Grandma’s injury."
Gao Guofu nodded, "Alright, I’ll come with you."
So, Old Lady Gao was taken to the hospital. The treatment naturally costs a considerable amount of money, and was expensive. Lin Xuebi and Yang Hua were unwilling to spend it, and even Gao Guofu and Gao Jianmin hesitated.
After all, it was no small sum. If they poured in the money from selling their house, what would the family do? Even pouring in the money might not cure her; it could be just a waste. Moreover, Old Lady Gao was old, and wouldn’t live many more years anyway, so Gao Guofu and the rest ultimately did not treat her and brought her back home from the hospital.
Thus, Old Lady Gao became paralyzed—a bolt from the blue. Lying in bed, unable to move, with all her eating, drinking, and bodily functions confined to the bed, who could stand it?
But after only three days in the house, Lin Xuebi and Yang Hua moved Old Lady Gao to the pigpen they had built.
