Chapter 55 - Breeze

When Ezra returned to the room, Oberyn was still looking up at the ceiling in a daze.

"Do you want to...go again?" Oberyn asked, sitting up as Ezra entered. "Can you?"

Before he could reply, the sound of rushing wind overwhelmed them, and a misty tuft of clouds blanketed the pagoda. Rav had just returned.

"Hello, boys!" Rav called, waving his tail in their direction. "Hope you didn't have too much fun while I was gone. Did the curse cleansing work out alright?"

Rav glanced over, noticing for the first time that Ezra was standing there in his underwear, and behind him on the bed, Oberyn was laying naked.

"O-oh," Rav coughed. "I see it went splendidly. Good man, Ezra."

He swished his tail around, mumbling under his breath. "When Rav's away, the boys will play. Should've figured."

"Ayo, Rav!" Ezra called back. The Ferin's ears tilted toward him. "Can I ask you my daily question?"

The Ferin smiled. "Did we not do that earlier? All the commotion in Asteria has my brain in a cloud..."

Ezra jogged up to the catboy, shameless in his underwear. "I've decided what I will do with my life, and you're first on the list. Rav - if I'm going to get stronger, I need to use my System to its full potential."

Rav's ears twitched. "Oh?"

"Yeah. So...I need to know what your deepest desire is. I'm going to help you fulfill it."

Rav eyed him up and down. "A dangerous request, hm? I have many desires."

Ezra narrowed his eyes. "Come on, Rav."

As they spoke, Oberyn poked out of the room, curious about their conversation. He didn't bother putting clothes on - to him, Rav had already seen it all, and there was no sense covering up.

It was also very clear that Oberyn didn't quite understand the full spectrum of intimacy.

"My deepest desire?" Rav held his fan up to his chin, and swayed back and forth in thought.

The Ferin gave deep consideration to his answer, reflecting on a lifetime of hedonism. And yet, none of it compared to the ache he felt in his heart for something else. Something far deeper and more profound than Ezra was expecting.

"Closure."

"C-closure?"

"Yes. You asked, and I answered. But I don't see how you could be any help with that, hm?"

"Well, it depends," Ezra considered. "Closure on what?"

Rav laughed for just a moment before his face twisted into a far more serious expression. "When I was fighting to save the world, there was someone who I hurt deeply. I consider it the most profound regret of my life. I've always wanted to find that person again. To apologize. To have him accept my apology," he clarified. "But...I have never had the courage to do it. I'm a cat, after all. We're not known for our bravery."

Rav sighed as he clacked his fan open, waving it to form a gentle breeze.

"What a weird one you are, Ezra. Getting me to talk about this. Gods, it's been years..."

Rav bit his lip. "It's an interesting thought, Ezra. But I don't see how you could help."

"I won't give up on this, Rav. At least tell me where to start."

Rav fluttered the fan. "Its quite hard to take you seriously like that. You both - oh, never mind. You really want to help? Bree will be flying in on Sunday - Deek will be arriving as well. We'll have a full house, so make sure your fairy puts some clothes on."

"Got it. And...what day is it again?"

"Monday. You've a whole week to frolic about as naked as you please. Preferably you, Ezra. Not that I dislike the eye candy of your boy, but he's got a lot less to gawk at."

On those words, Rav clacked his fan and sauntered away toward his den.

Ezra and Oberyn exchanged a longing stare. Ezra returned to the Nephilim's side and brushed a hand through his hair.

"Seems like I can't help Rav until Sunday, but that gives me a week. I wonder if we can visit Deek and Cliff, to see what they want to do..."

"And what's this all for, exactly?"

Ezra caught his breath.

He'd not realized it until that moment. He hadn't ever talked about his Desire System with Oberyn. He hadn't ever confessed what happened with it the other day.

[So eager to talk, and yet so unprepared.]

Ezra opened his mouth, then shut it again. He was scared - of saying the wrong thing, of scaring Oberyn away.

And worried if he said nothing, that it would just make Oberyn suspicious.

"I have a power," Ezra started. He looked away from Oberyn and stared into the sky, trying to paint the picture nothing was wrong at all.

"It gives me power whenever I fulfill wishes and desires. I think I can use it to heal your curse, but I need to find more people to help."

Oberyn eyed him suspiciously, but he didn't press the issue. "I see. That's a wonderful power."

Ezra could tell by the stilted delivery that Oberyn wasn't fully convinced nothing was wrong. "Is this a power you've always had, or is it one of Alcor's?"

"Eh...I just found out about it two days ago. It's one of mine."

"I see."

Those words - Oberyn loved to resort to them whenever he was visibly bothered by something but refused to talk about it.

Ezra knew better by now than to interrogate the Nephilim. It would only serve to fire him up - he was feisty and fiery when he needed to be. The innocent, loving Oberyn only appeared behind closed doors.

'Speaking of closed doors...'

"You, uh... still wanted to go again, right?" Ezra scratched his cheek. "I mean... you know."

The disdain faded from Oberyn in an instant, and he perked up.

"Just once or twice more. When you...you know, I didn't get a chance to see it."

Ezra patted Oberyn on the back and led him into the room. "We'll make sure to fix that this time, eh?"
