Villain's Path System-Chapter 21: Partners in Crime
The morning sun cut through Lucian’s window like an accusation.
He’d barely slept.
And when he had, every movement sent pain lancing through his ribs where that thing had kicked him.
*Bruised. Probably cracked. Definitely going to hurt like hell for days.*
He sat up carefully, wincing.
His practice sword—what was left of it—sat in pieces on his desk. A reminder of how outmatched he’d been.
*Pathetic. That’s what it called me. Pathetic.*
And it wasn’t wrong.
Without Elira, he’d be dead.
Again.
First Seraphina had defended him publicly. Now Elira had saved his life.
*How many times am I going to need rescuing before I’m strong enough to stand on my own?*
The frustration burned hotter than the pain in his ribs.
He was supposed to be rewriting the story. Taking control of his fate.
Instead, he kept surviving by the grace of women who owed him nothing. Seraphina believes in me. Elira protects me. But I can’t keep relying on them.*
*I need to get stronger. Fast.*
Seven days to find out who framed him.
Seven days before the story tried to destroy him again.
He dragged himself out of bed, every movement a reminder of last night.
*Can’t show weakness. Can’t let anyone see I’m hurt.*
*Especially not today. Today, I start fighting back.*
The system notification glowed in his vision. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
[QUEST REMINDER] "Uncover the Conspiracy" Someone is targeting you. Find out who before the next Fate Correction strikes. Time Remaining: 7 Days
By the time he left his dorm, the academy was already buzzing with activity.
Students moved between buildings in clusters.
And they were all staring at him.
Whispering.
"—that’s him—"
"—can’t believe he showed his face—"
"—Seraphina Ashenblade actually defended him—"
Lucian kept his expression neutral and kept walking.
Let them talk. I have work to do.
He was halfway to the library when someone fell into step beside him.
Seraphina.
She wore her combat uniform, sword at her hip, red hair pulled back in a high ponytail.
And she was staring straight ahead like this was completely normal.
"You’re planning something stupid, aren’t you?"
Lucian glanced at her.
Ah. Here we go.
"Good morning to you too."
"Don’t deflect." She kept pace easily, not looking at him. "You’re going to investigate. Try to clear your name. Probably get yourself into more trouble."
"And you’re here because...?"
"This is about finding the truth." She crossed her arms. "The fact that it also protects my reputation is just... convenient."
Her ears are turning pink. She shifted her weight. Classic tell.
*She’s terrible at lying. Absolutely terrible. It’s kind of endearing.*
"Right. Convenient." He let his smile widen just slightly. "Whatever helps you sleep at night, Seraphina."
[AFFECTION INCREASED]
Seraphina Ashenblade: 35 → 39
Oh, she liked that. Noted.
"Stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you think I’m doing this because I care about you specifically." Her face colored slightly. "I care about justice. And not being made a fool of. That’s it."
He turned to face her fully.
Stepped just slightly closer than necessary.
Watched her breath catch.
There it is.
[AFFECTION INCREASED]
Seraphina Ashenblade: 39 → 44
"Whatever you say."
"I hate you."
[AFFECTION INCREASED]
Seraphina Ashenblade: 44 → 46
She’s not. Affection just ticked up. I can feel it.
