Chapter 213: Chapter-213

Hearing the tremor in Veer’s voice, Kaya’s heart sank. She followed his gaze downward, and that’s when she noticed it—the grass wasn’t just swaying with the breeze. It was trembling, as if something massive was slithering beneath it.

Veer’s jaw tightened. He glanced at Kaya, then at the bag lying near the roots of the tree. His voice was low but sharp.

"Listen carefully. I’m going to lower you on the count of three. You grab the bag as fast as you can—don’t hesitate, not even for a second. Got it?"

Kaya opened her mouth to answer, but he was already counting.

"Three... two..."

Before she could even say yes, he dropped her down in a swift motion. Kaya’s reflexes kicked in. She lunged, snatching the bag with every ounce of strength in her arms.

"One!" Veer’s shout cut through the air, and the moment her fingers closed around the strap, he yanked her back up and bolted into the sky with explosive speed.

The ground beneath them erupted. Kaya’s eyes widened in horror as an enormous python burst through the grass—black as tar, thicker than any tree trunk she had ever seen. It lunged at the exact spot where the bag had been, its jaws snapping shut with a thunderous crack that made the earth shake.

And then it turned, its massive body coiling, eyes locked on them. With terrifying force, the python launched upward, striking at the sky itself.

Kaya’s breath hitched. If not for Veer pushing himself to his absolute limit, she knew—without a doubt—that monster would have swallowed them whole.

Cold sweat ran down her back. Her palms were clammy around the bag she had just risked her life for. A moment ago, she thought she could face anything, fight anything. But reality had just struck her hard. Her body trembled, her heart pounding like a war drum. For the first time in a long while, Kaya was gripped by pure, unshakable fear.

Veer held Kaya tightly against him, his arms like iron around her trembling frame. But then Kaya froze, her eyes widening. It wasn’t just one snake. Not two either. From above, she could see them—dozens of massive serpents slithering out of the earth, rising like a nightmare brought to life. The once calm, quiet land below now writhed with their thick, black bodies.

Their eyes—cold, unblinking—were fixed on them. On her. On Veer.

And they weren’t letting go.

Every move Veer made in the air, they mirrored. Left—snakes surged left. Right—they swarmed right. It was as if a pack of death itself was tailing them, waiting for one mistake.

Veer’s voice came low, steady but sharp with urgency.

"Listen, I’m putting you on my back. You’ll hold me—tightly. I’m going to transform into my beast form. Whatever happens, don’t let go of my neck. Understood?"

Kaya’s heart pounded so hard she could barely breathe. He had never once revealed his vulture form to her during all their travels. For him to do so now... it meant the danger was beyond anything she had imagined.

And she could feel it—the cold, suffocating dread of death crawling up her spine. One wrong move, and they’d be nothing more than prey.

Veer shifted her onto his back, careful yet fast. His amber eyes blazed brighter, glowing like molten gold before hardening into a feral, shining light. Then, in one fluid surge, his body expanded, bones reshaping, wings tearing out with a thunderous crack.

Kaya gasped. The man she knew vanished in an instant, replaced by a massive, black-feathered vulture whose wings cut through the air with terrifying power.

As his form grew, Kaya’s grip faltered—her arms slipping, her palms desperately clawing at him. But there was no time for fear. Below them, death waited with open jaws. With all her strength, Kaya pressed herself against him, clutching fistfuls of his feathers, refusing to let go.

Now astride his back, her body rose and fell with the beat of his wings. The sheer size, the raw power of him, left her breathless. For a moment, fear and awe tangled together inside her.

She had seen glimpses of Veer’s strength before, but this—this was something else.

Kaya stared, her mind reeling. The man she had laughed with, argued with, leaned on—was now a towering, winged beast carrying her away from certain death.

For the first time, all doubt slipped away.

They had been flying for what felt like forever. The serpent had chased them relentlessly through the night, its massive body slithering below, striking upward again and again. Not until the moon was high—close to midnight—did they finally manage to shake it off.

When Veer finally landed on the thick branch of a towering tree, Kaya could barely feel her legs. Her head spun from the endless flight, her stomach twisted with hunger, and her chest burned from holding her breath for so long.

She pressed her back against the trunk, closing her eyes for a moment before forcing them open, trying to steady her spinning vision. With a tired huff, she pulled out a flask of water and handed it to Veer, who was sitting beside her, his legs dangling carelessly over the side. He had already shifted back into his human form, but his breathing was just as rough as hers.

Kaya turned her head toward him, sweat sticking her hair to her face.

"What the heck, Veer?" she rasped out between breaths. "Why were they chasing us like that? They nearly killed us."

Veer took a long sip from the water, his jaw tight. His teeth clenched as he muttered, voice low but laced with venom,

"Damn snakes... I’ll kill them. Every last one of them."

But Veer’s expression had completely changed. The earlier fear and rush in his eyes had drained away, leaving behind nothing but raw, burning hatred.

Kaya stared at him, unsettled, then remembered something she had once read—that vultures and snakes were mortal enemies. Like they were born to hate each other, destined to clash. She just never imagined it could be this extreme.
