Chapter 106: 106:Test

Why!

Why! Why! Why!

Why am I back here again?

Lucian looked around him feverently but all he saw was darkness. There was nothing in front of him just plain darkness just like in his dreams.

Panic surged through him.

Am I dead? No i can’t be dead! This is impossible!

His eyes widened filling with struggle and adrenaline as he tried to move forward. Something inside of him was telling him to move, to walk forward or he would be trapped in the never ending nightmare.

The moment his first foot stepped forward, he touched wet solid ground.

He could feel his bare feet slowly sink into a small pool of water before he touched solid ground.

"Anyone there?"

He unconsciously asked as he walked through the paddle of water. The further he walked forward the weirder things seemed to be.

The water’s height did increase or reduce, but it remained at his ankles, and it didn’t even make a slosh while he waded through it.

The only sound he could hear was his own breathing and his rapidly beating heart.

Everything was just silent as though the world had gone still and he was the only one left standing in the sinking murk.

He continued forward, not daring to stop. He didn’t want to feel the coldness of the dark surroundings.

His mind, to cope, played his memories of his current life over and over again. He would sometimes burst into laughter before realising himself.

The only thing accompanying him in the cold world was the memories.

He had to keep them alive or he would sink into his own mind.

Lucian had been walking for god knows how long before he saw a small twinkle from up ahead.

He squinted his eyes to confirm he wasn’t dreaming, the small light still remained as if tempting him forward.

Despite his mental exhaustion, Lucian didn’t step forward. He was lucid enough to know its appearance was strange and he couldn’t just rush like a desperate fool at the first sign of redemption.

The light was a form of relief but also something he had to be cautious about.

"What a cautious little thing."

A voice came from the small light, a whisp to be exact. Lucian didn’t react but his face clouded over.

He was familiar with the voice, it was whatever had been in the egg.

"Who are you?"

He asked. He has never heard or read of this type of hatching and beast before. He couldn’t even identify what type of beast she was since he hadn’t seen her form.

"Ooh.. curious ain’t we? But not yet, you have to pass my test for you to be worthy of my presence. "

The arrogant woman said. Lucian almost rolled his eyes. This was getting more and more ridiculous.

"And if I fail?"

He wasn’t planning to but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

"I’ll devour your soul, such broken souls are the tastiest. "

Lucian was quiet. He had not expected that answer. A being that can feed on souls. He could only think of necromancers.

"Do not compare my majesty to those freaks!"

The voice cut through his thoughts.

"You can read my thoughts?"

Lucian asked. A sharp laughter full of arrogance and scorn filled the space. Lucian felt the space physically shake.

The water that had been unmoving started to boil.

"Such ignorance..."

Lucian waited for her to finish her words but she stopped mid-sentence.

"What’s the test about,"

He asked. The woman sighed.

"As you already know, your soul is very broken right?"

Lucian nodded. After his experiments on the soul, he had turned it on himself.

Jeneviv had taken his soul out of his body. It had been a very painful experience since it felt as if his whole being was ripped out of his body.

The news he had gotten had been as expected. His soul was broken beyond repair.

At that time, he had gone into a frenzy of experiments but he couldn’t find a way to get rid of the cracks.

He knew the importance of a soul and had been determined to heal it.

A broken soul and missing memories about his past.

"Yes, what does my soul have anything to do with the test. "

"You’re a clever child, you should have already figured it out right?"

The voice said jokingly.

"My past... but I cannot remember?"

She chuckled.

"For you to grow child you have to face the past you chose to forget, that is what is holding you back."

Lucian wasn’t surprised by that but he felt a certain dread. From his experiments, the souls that forget about their past are those that experienced something truly traumatic.

He had already come to that conclusion after his experiments, but the thought made his stomach churn.

"You poor thing... do not disappoint me"

Lucian felt something push at his forehead before he lost consciousness again.

.....

When Lucian opened his eyes again he was standing in a white room.

Hospital equipment surrounded him and the constant beeping of machines reached him.

He sighed softly.

’Why the heck am I in the hospital? Did I die in an accident or sickness? ’

People in familiar doctor’s clothing passed by him each rushing to an insanely beautiful woman giving birth.

He tried to reach out with his hand but one of the nurses rushed through him as if he didn’t exist.

"Where is this?"

"Just watch, you’ll understand in a bit....This is nothing but an illusion."

The voice said. Lucian could already understand that he was inside his memories.

He watched on as the woman on the bed screamed in pain and frustration as the doctors encouraged her to push before a soft cry came.

His birth.

The doctors hurriedly cleaned the child and presented him to the woman but she looked at the baby on the doctor’s arms and clicked her tongue.

"Why was it not a girl... how is this supposed to be useful.... I should have just aborted it....we’ll have to try again next time."

Lucian frowned at her cruel words.

’Was I that unwanted?’

The doctors were left awkwardly holding the baby as the room descended into silence. Everyone was shocked by her words.

The doctor hesitantly nodded and turned to leave with the child when the door was forcefully pushed open.

A man with equally black hair rudely walked in and didn’t even glance at the child. He walked to his wife’s bed and looked down at her tired and frowning.

"This is disappointing, you should have listened to my advice.."

"But aborting at such a late stage would have killed me.."

She said trying to reason with him. Her nails dug into his arm not letting him go.

"How will that thing be helpful... we’re too young for a boy."

That was when Lucian noticed. The couple seemed to be in their early or mid-twenties.

"We’ll try again next time just..."

The woman didn’t let her finish her words. He turned around and left the room.

Lucian didn’t get a chance to follow, the scene shifted and he found himself in a large room full of toys.

He could already guess where he was.

His bedroom.

His eyes wandered around before it landed on his younger self. He could already see the resemblance between his former body and his current one.

The only thing that differentiated the two was that he had black hair and blue eyes.

"I’m hungry .."

The child mumbled to himself and rubbed his stomach. At five years old he was unusually small and looked emaciated despite all the richness that seemed to surround him.

The child stood up, staggering a bit before he walked to the table and picked up the phone that had been placed there.

Lucian stood behind him and watched as he expertly opened the contacts and pressed call on the only number on the phone.

The Pizza Hut.

The phone rang for a moment before it was picked up.

"Hello, what would you like to order?"

"I want pizza, the big one ..."

The receiver was quiet, clearly surprised by the childish voice at the end.

"Are you alone kid?"

He nodded then shook his head then remembered the caller couldn’t see him.

"Uhhn.. mum told me I should call you for pizza when I’m hungry."

The caller bless her responded faster.

"Really.. where are your parents then?"

"I don’t know... I’m hungry, could you please send me some pizza?"

He asked in an unusually mature tone.

"Okay, but you have to tell me where you live so I can bring it to you."

"Mum said at the big blue house in Blevy Hills."

"Okay sit tight I’ll bring you something yummy."

He nodded and threw the phone on his bed and walked to the door. He stood on his toes and opened the door.

Lucian passed through the already closing door. He followed behind him down the semi-lit hallway that seemed to be haunted and down a long flight of stairs.

The excitement in his bouncing feet couldn’t be missed. Lucian looked around the large house but couldn’t find any servants.

’Was I always alone at home?’

He tried to jog his memory but only the snippets of memories he had seen came, he could vaguely see the future memories but they were still blurry.
