Chapter 95: 91 Struggle

The gunshot blasted the bark off the tree in front of Wang Jian. His heart was filled with terror; this was the closest he had ever been to death. In the past, when he saved the dying and helped the injured, it was always others who were in peril. Although he was moved by such experiences, they were completely different from the present moment.

It was only now, confronted with such weaponry, that he realized his fear of death hadn’t diminished one bit.

Wang Jian, clutching Cai Qiong, started to retreat. He deliberately chose a route diagonal to their two assailants so that even if they fired, there would at least be obstacles to shield them from the bullets.

The fear of death didn’t last long before many thoughts surfaced in his mind. From that single shot, Wang Jian could discern a lot.

Shou Hou and Lao Zhou were formidable.

They hadn’t even communicated; Lao Zhou had immediately raised his gun and fired simply because Shou Hou had asked a question in their direction. Such trust and ruthlessness were terrifying.

Moreover, Lao Zhou’s marksmanship was precise. This was with a modified shotgun that was clearly of substandard quality. To be so accurate with such equipment was truly incredible.

Setting aside their identities, their coordination and marksmanship were exceptional.

But what frightened Wang Jian the most was Lao Zhou’s decisiveness and their utter disregard for human life. They knew their actions were illegal. Not only had they chosen their location carefully, but their method of dealing with outsiders who stumbled upon them was also resolute. This style of operation was not typical of ordinary criminals.

What Wang Jian found even more incredible was that upon seeing him and Cai Qiong run, the two men didn’t waste any more words and immediately gave chase, guns in hand.

It’s over.

That was the thought that popped into Wang Jian’s mind. Facing such individuals was far different from dealing with the foolish thieves depicted in TV shows and movies. He felt an urgency he had never experienced before, not even during the months he had spent in the deep mountains encountering wild beasts.

Wang Jian and Cai Qiong were fast, but the men chasing them were not slow either.

Lao Zhou would occasionally fire a shot, but because they were all moving, the poor quality of the modified shotgun became apparent. Its accuracy dropped significantly, with the shots almost always hitting the trees and the ground a meter or two away from them.

Even so, it was enough to terrify Cai Qiong.

Watching Wang Jian and Cai Qiong’s figures shrink into the distance, Lao Zhou cursed, "Damn it! This shotgun’s accuracy is terrible, and it reloads too slowly."

After speaking, Lao Zhou slung the gun over his back. If they let Wang Jian and Cai Qiong keep running, they would soon be out of range. The junk modified gun didn’t perform well. Hitting something at a hundred meters was already a long shot, and beyond that, the pellet spread was awful. More importantly, he couldn’t fire the shotgun too many times. If someone outside the immediate area heard the shots and called the police, they would be in deep trouble.

So after firing three shots, Lao Zhou gave up. He drew his knife and quickened his pace to catch up with Shou Hou, continuing the chase.

Hearing the gunfire cease, Wang Jian glanced back and saw that the two men had suddenly picked up speed. At this rate, with Cai Qiong slowing him down, there was no chance of escape. Things were getting complicated.

After reaching a dip in the mountain that provided much better visual cover, an idea formed in Wang Jian’s mind.

"You go on ahead!" Wang Jian suddenly let go of Cai Qiong’s hand and pushed her forward. "Follow the path I cleared on the way here. Just run, don’t worry about anything, and don’t stop. Once you get a signal, call the police immediately."

Having said that, Wang Jian prepared to turn back. With Cai Qiong present, he couldn’t fully utilize the skills he had learned in the mountains or exert his full strength. It was better to separate. He devised a two-pronged strategy: he would stay behind to distract Lao Zhou and their accomplice, leveraging his physical capabilities and knowledge of the human body. A surprise attack might just turn the tables. Meanwhile, Cai Qiong could escape and call the police. It was the best of both worlds.

Cai Qiong froze, stunned. "You..." She never imagined Wang Jian would tell her to go on while he stayed behind to cover their retreat. She was so shocked that she just stood there, her mind in turmoil. Gazing at Wang Jian’s earnest expression, she didn’t know what to say. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

But time was short. Wang Jian had no time to explain, quickly adding, "I’m trained. Ordinary strong men can’t even get close to me. Plus, I know the Gold Needle Sealing Acupoint medical skill, which can restrict their movements. I won’t die if I stay behind."

Gold Needle Sealing Acupoint...

Cai Qiong’s eyes reddened, and her nose tingled at Wang Jian’s clumsy excuse. Yet, she didn’t argue. The pursuers were drawing closer, and while her stamina was decent, she couldn’t match Wang Jian’s pace. She knew she had been dragging him down. She hadn’t known Wang Jian for long, but he was willing to stay behind for her. As for his claims about being trained and knowing some special medical skill, she couldn’t possibly believe them, dismissing them as lies meant to comfort her.

Cai Qiong had briefly thought that since she was the burden, she should be the one to stay behind and let Wang Jian escape. But the words never left her lips, transforming instead into a different phrase.

"Thank you..." After speaking, Cai Qiong turned and ran, a single one of her tears drifting through the air.

She was scared, terrified of dying. Faced with the choice between death and fleeing alone, she chose to run.

Burdened by her choice, Cai Qiong didn’t dare look back at Wang Jian’s face. She just kept murmuring, "I’m sorry," as tears flowed endlessly from her eyes. She was just plain scared. From the moment the gun fired, her soul had practically left her body.

Overwhelmed with guilt and fear, her mind was filled with nothing but the name Wang Jian and the responsibilities her family had entrusted her with. Her flight became a subconscious action. As if soulless, she ran blindly along the path they had come.

Perhaps if she had glanced back and seen the smile on Wang Jian’s face, she might have thought differently.

Of course, Wang Jian was unaware of Cai Qiong’s inner turmoil. He let her go simply because he found her a hindrance and wanted her out of the way. While he was protecting her, it was more that he wanted to take a gamble. If they foolishly kept running, both would definitely be caught. Then, Lao Zhou could get close and take one of them down with a single shot. Wang Jian feared this possibility, so he preferred to launch a surprise attack.

He used the sight of Cai Qiong running away to draw the two men’s attention. When they approached, he planned to use Golden Needles to seal their acupoints and immobilize them directly.

Deep in the undeveloped mountains, the trees and undergrowth were thick, providing ample cover. The two men were far enough away that they couldn’t clearly see whether the rapidly moving figure was one person or two.

Wang Jian hid behind the dip in the terrain, watching Cai Qiong get farther away as the footsteps behind him drew closer. The footsteps showed no sign of pausing. Wang Jian knew his initial gamble had paid off.

"Fuck! These two really are damn fast," Shou Hou cursed. Being closer, Wang Jian could hear him more clearly. His voice was slightly strained, but still steady, indicating good stamina.

Lao Zhou, who was chasing from behind, was in better physical condition than Shou Hou but was also somewhat out of breath. "With their speed, they must be from a nearby village. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be so familiar with the routes."

As they neared the dip, the men’s footsteps suddenly slowed. Wang Jian, who had been poised to move, was forced to freeze, his heart beginning to pound again.

Have I been discovered?

Wang Jian’s heart throbbed as his hands closed around two long silver needles, ready to spring into action.

"What’s wrong?" Shou Hou asked. Wang Jian breathed a sigh of relief.

Lao Zhou sighed. "I took a look around. Another ten minutes of running and we might encounter other people. We need to hurry."

"Then let’s get a move on!" Shou Hou charged forward, passing the dip without a backward glance.

A moment later, Lao Zhou rushed past as well.

At that very instant, Wang Jian moved.

Both silver needles were aimed at Lao Zhou’s neck, the goal being to first subdue the man with the gun.

Although Wang Jian moved with incredible speed from behind, both Lao Zhou and his partner were extremely alert.

The moment the needles pierced his neck, Lao Zhou cried out, "Ambush!"

Then, before he could even react, Lao Zhou was sent flying. He tumbled to the ground face-first without making any move to protect himself. His body was completely stiff and motionless.

The sight left Monkey dumbfounded. He had sharp eyes and watched Lao Zhou fly through the air, noticing two shimmering silver objects stuck in his neck. They looked like the silver needles used in Chinese medicine. Even for someone as worldly as him, it took a moment to process what he was seeing.

In that brief instant, Wang Jian had already charged forward, following Lao Zhou’s falling body.

But Monkey was no pushover. He let out a cold laugh and raised his knife to slash forward.

"Fuck your ancestors."
