Chapter 70: 66 Bonus

"What’s happening... Am I still alive?"

Although Li Dachun was awake, he hadn’t fully come to his senses. In the moment before he fainted, he had thought he was about to drop dead. Now, upon regaining consciousness, all he felt was a stinging pain on his face, where the skin on his nose and cheeks was scraped raw.

Far from feeling discomfort, Li Dachun was somewhat relieved. The pain assured him that he was, indeed, still alive.

Sitting on the ground, his limbs felt weak, and it seemed impossible to stand up anytime soon.

"Didn’t I just faint?" As soon as he spoke, a bystander replied, "Faint? From the looks of it, if you hadn’t caught that next breath, you would’ve been a goner. You should be thankful someone saved you. Why haven’t you thanked them yet?"

Only then did Li Dachun carefully examine his surroundings. Not much had changed since he passed out, except for one strange thing: the young doctor from Cai’s Hospital he had encountered that morning was here.

Li Dachun was rendered speechless. The very person he’d tried to scam had agitated him so badly that he’d fainted, and now that same doctor was here. Maybe he’s also here to testify against me. This thought sent him spiraling back into despondency.

Still dazed, he had already forgotten that someone had saved him and hadn’t fully processed the situation, leaving him with a wooden expression.

Yu Le waved a hand in front of his face. "What’s wrong? Still not well? Doctor Wang, maybe you should check him again. Is there still something wrong with him?"

"Hmm," Wang Jian said after observing Li Dachun’s complexion. His lips were still a bit purplish, but his color was improving, indicating the risk of sudden death had passed. "The danger has passed, but the driver’s physical condition isn’t great, so his mental faculties are recovering more slowly. Once he gets some fresh air and his brain gets more oxygen, he’ll be more coherent. He probably hasn’t fully adapted to his surroundings yet..."

Noticing Li Dachun’s numb expression, Wang Jian added, "You’ve just woken up, so your limbs won’t regain their strength so easily. Your body isn’t made of steel; you still need to take proper care of it. Sit here for a while longer. Although I revived you, that was just an emergency measure, not a cure. When the ambulance arrives, go to the hospital and follow the doctor’s orders for treatment."

After speaking, Wang Jian gave Yu Le a meaningful look and said no more. Had it been anyone else, Wang Jian might have written a prescription on the spot, but this driver was a special case. He could see the disbelief in the man’s eyes, and with such a foundation of mistrust, saying more would be pointless. Besides, they had argued that morning. Wang Jian was no saint and was still irritated. Saving the man’s life was more than enough; he could leave the treatment to other doctors. He didn’t need to be the hero.

"You... you saved me?" Li Dachun found his answer in Wang Jian’s words, his expression filled with disbelief. But a glance at the surrounding crowd confirmed it, and he fell silent.

Seeing this, Wang Jian turned to Yu Le. "Alright, I’m not needed here anymore. I have to get to the City Hospital, so I won’t stay."

As he spoke, he handed over the safety pin, his fingertips accidentally grazing her palm, which earned him a glare from Yu Le.

"You’re leaving already?" Yu Le asked, surprised. She looked down at the small safety pin in her hand and quickly fastened the front of her shirt again.

"Yeah, there’s no point in me staying..."

Wang Jian turned to leave but then seemed to remember something. He pointed at the old man still playing dead on the ground. "That white foam on his mouth is just milk froth. I could smell it from a distance, and his breathing is steady. He’s not dead. He’s just a fraud trying to stage an accident, so you can rest assured."

He directed that last sentence at Yu Le, knowing the young officer lacked experience and was worried she might be fooled again. With that final clarification, Wang Jian waved and left. "I’m off."

Chairman Cai’s driver had been standing by the car the whole time, watching from afar. Seeing Wang Jian approach, he bowed deeply, opened the car door, and made an inviting gesture.

The scene was rather shocking to the onlookers. In their city, not many people had a personal driver, let alone an Audi A6. Moreover, the car looked like a retired government vehicle with a provincial license plate, which suggested an even more impressive background.

"Who is this Doctor Wang, exactly?"

"Is he really a doctor?"

The onlookers weren’t the only ones who were curious; Yu Le had her doubts too.

Still sitting on the ground, Li Dachun was drowning in regret. He was the only person there who recognized the car. He’d seen Cai Xing in it when he drove a fare to Cai’s Hospital, and the driver then was the same man now serving Wang Jian. The realization left Li Dachun completely numb. He had offended someone he absolutely shouldn’t have. He was lucky the man was so magnanimous; not only did he not seek revenge, but he had actually saved his life.

Li Dachun was overcome with remorse. It’s a pity there’s no cure for regret in this world.

As Wang Jian got into the car, the crowd automatically parted to let it through, instantly relieving the intersection’s congestion.

Not long after Wang Jian left, a police car and an ambulance arrived.

"Chief!"

Yu Le’s mentor was a fifty-year-old police veteran who looked like he had seen it all. As soon as he got out of the car, he and his colleague began clearing the scene. He interviewed the onlookers, sent the taxi driver off with the paramedics, and had the fraud detained in the police car.

Ironically, the scamming old man only scrambled to his feet after Sun Ji arrived, at which point he received a harsh scolding.

Then, Sun Ji approached Yu Le and scolded her irritably, "Can’t you act more like a police officer? You let the scene get this chaotic and caused a traffic jam." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Yu Le stuck out her tongue. "It’s only my third day as a traffic cop..."

"So what? A traffic cop is still a cop! You’ve been on the job for three days, and instead of directing traffic, you’re causing gridlock. Get your act together."

"Chief Sun, everything is handled," another officer reported.

"Good work, Xiao Lew."

Sun Ji had been on the force for nearly thirty years. Yu Le was his protégée and also his niece. Xiao Lew, who had rushed to the scene with him, was a five-year veteran and far more competent than Yu Le—a promising young officer.

"How many times has that old man pulled this stunt?" Sun Ji asked.

"This must be the tenth time."

"Lock him up for a few extra days this time. He never learns. A man his age should be doing honest work..." Sun Ji grumbled before asking, "What about the driver the ambulance took away?"

"Oh, him," Xiao Liu said, glancing at his phone with a chuckle. "He’s no saint either. He’s been named in several complaints from out-of-towners about illegal taxis."

"..."

Sun Ji was speechless. He swore under his breath before letting out a derisive laugh. "What a coincidence. Two old scoundrels ran into each other. No wonder it turned into such a mess..." He could easily imagine how the scene had unfolded.

Yu Le chuckled. "If Doctor Wang hadn’t shown up, things could have gotten much worse."

"Doctor Wang?" Sun Ji knew who she meant, but he wore a puzzled expression. "Why does that young man sound so familiar?"

Seeing his reaction, Xiao Lew showed a similar expression. "His surname is Wang, he’s that young, and he uses needles... Could he be the young doctor from yesterday?"

"Ah, that’s right!" Sun Ji clapped his hands in realization. "It must be him! It’s too much of a coincidence otherwise. A young, skilled Chinese medicine practitioner isn’t a dime a dozen."

"What are you two talking about?" Yu Le asked, confused. "Yesterday? Today? Do you know him?"

"We do, in a way," Sun Ji said with a smile, "though we only met him briefly. Remember that car accident on the expressway yesterday? A young Chinese medicine practitioner saved many people before the police and paramedics even arrived. The most severely injured boy only survived thanks to him. If Xiao Lew hadn’t reminded me, I would’ve completely forgotten. Based on your description, he must be the one."

"Tsk, I wish you’d stopped him. I’d like to get to know a young man like that."

Yu Le was stunned. I knew Wang Jian was more than he seemed, but I never imagined this... The driver and the fancy car sent my thoughts in the wrong direction. Now that she knew what Wang Jian had done on the expressway, she was deeply impressed.

Hearing Sun Ji’s regret, Yu Le reminded him, "He said he was in a hurry to get to the City Hospital. Chief, if you go now, you might still catch him."

Sun Ji rolled his eyes. "I was just making conversation. Do you really think I’m that free?" He then playfully tousled Yu Le’s hair, laughing as he scolded her, "Alright, let’s pack it up and head back to the station. You, my dear, really aren’t cut out for traffic duty."

While they were talking, Wang Jian arrived at the hospital.

He planned to go to the inpatient department to pick up his sister-in-law and return to the village. It was getting late, and the mountain roads were unsafe after dark. However, just as he entered the outpatient building, Liang Xiu grabbed him. She had been waiting at the entrance and rushed over as soon as he appeared.

"I’ve been waiting for you for an hour! Quick, come with me... someone has been looking for you."

"Who? I’m in a rush to pick someone up and head back to the village. What’s so urgent?"

Wang Jian found himself being dragged along by Liang Xiu, who gave him no chance to refuse.

"You! Saving all those people on the expressway yesterday got the city leaders’ attention. They came this afternoon thinking you were one of our doctors. When they found out who you were and that you were out, they decided to wait. They’re in our Director’s office right now. I bet if you were any later, you would’ve missed your chance."

"Missed what?" Wang Jian asked, stunned. The car accident actually hadn’t been as severe as it sounded; most people had only suffered fractures or minor injuries. He felt this much attention was unnecessary, but Liang Xiu’s tone suggested something important awaited him. "I’m not particularly interested in schmoozing with officials. Unless it’s important, I’ll pass."

"Heh, what else could it be?" Liang Xiu laughed. "After the leaders learned you aren’t a hospital doctor, they decided to give you a Good Samaritan award—it comes with a one hundred thousand yuan cash prize! You’d have to be a fool to turn down free money."

Money? One hundred thousand?

Talk of a cash prize instantly chased away any of Wang Jian’s fatigue. Hearing about the award, he no longer needed Liang Xiu to drag him; he strode forward on his own. With the Wang family’s current situation, they were desperate for money. This prize was a true godsend.
