Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 65: The place where dreams begin
"Mmm."
Xu Qian’s voice was exceptionally soft, but in this environment, Wang Jian still heard it clearly. Just this gentle murmur was enough to make his blood surge.
Wang Jian suddenly realized something—the two of them had never been this close before.
To Xu Qian, it all felt somewhat unreal. She had originally thought Wang Xiang’s existence would be the biggest barrier between them. She never expected his return would instead become the very catalyst for them getting together.
Feeling the warmth of Wang Jian’s palm, Xu Qian was extremely nervous. Although she had secretly kissed him before, that was all it was. Kissing a man who was drunk and asleep was a completely different concept from kissing one who was wide awake.
While awake, a hug was soft and warm—two of the most comforting sensations imaginable. Wang Jian’s hands, free of calluses, were light and gentle, smoothing away all the surprise Xu Qian had felt that day.
Unlike Xu Qian, Wang Jian’s thoughts weren’t so delicate. Right now, he just felt that a woman’s waist might be the most attractive place in the world. But given the time and place, he certainly wasn’t going to keep his hand in just one spot.
As he shifted his position, Wang Jian felt a distinct tremor through his hand. He sensed Xu Qian’s nervousness. Perhaps it was his imagination, but the temperature of her skin seemed to be rising.
Wang Jian whispered, "Don’t be afraid."
"Don’t..."
His hand was caught. Xu Qian, trembling, intercepted him just at the edge. "Don’t be so fast."
Just as disappointment washed over Wang Jian, she added, "Slow... slowly..."
The small hand holding his let go. Joy flared in Wang Jian’s heart, and he resumed his exploration. Her garden path, never before swept for a guest, now opened its gates for him alone. The dewy ground amidst the untamed grass was, without a doubt, a fatal attraction.
Xu Qian couldn’t move comfortably and could only lie on her side. Even so, she turned her head, searching for him in the darkness.
There’s a good reason women like the lights off. The atmosphere is highly conducive to building emotion, so much so that Xu Qian no longer felt the pain in her ribs. Her entire being was immersed in this ambiance, savoring the interaction with Wang Jian.
This night was destined to be a long one.
「The next morning.」
As the rising sun shone through the window, Wang Jian was the first to open his eyes. He was greeted by the sight of Xu Qian’s hair, her head resting entirely on his arm. After the night’s exertions, his arm had gone completely numb. If he didn’t pull it out soon, it might become useless. Make no mistake—cutting off blood flow for an entire night could permanently cripple an arm.
While Xu Qian was still asleep, he stealthily withdrew his arm and left the room.
Only after he left did Xu Qian open her eyes, her face flushed crimson. She had actually been awake for a while but hadn’t dared to move because something was pressing against her.
So naughty!
Xu Qian cursed silently, but the memory of last night’s experience made her flush with shyness. So, when Wang Jian removed his arm, she kept her eyes closed. Hearing him rubbing his arm, she desperately wanted to stifle a laugh.
Wang Jian left City Hospital without lingering, immediately hailing a taxi on the roadside to head for Cai’s Hospital. He had an appointment with Cai Xing at ten o’clock that morning, and it was almost that time. The timing was perfect to head over from here, so he rushed out of the hospital without even eating breakfast.
The taxi driver was an interesting, middle-aged man who started chatting as soon as Wang Jian got in. Wang Jian had thought only taxi drivers in Beijing were talkative, but it turned out the locals were the same.
"Are you a doctor, young man?"
"Yes, how could you tell?"
"Hah, I’ve been driving a cab for a long time. I’ve seen all sorts of people. I can tell what a young fellow like you is up to at a glance."
"..."
Today’s drivers seemed to possess a mysterious confidence; they couldn’t take a compliment but were extremely chatty. Wang Jian had already fallen silent, but the driver wasn’t about to let him off. "Heading to Cai’s Hospital this early, you must be doing a private gig, right? I tell you, you young people these days are just too impulsive. How old are you, taking on side jobs already? Aren’t you afraid of messing up?"
"Actually, I’m not here for a side job."
"No need to be shy, I won’t report you. I’ve driven plenty of doctors like you before, but they were all going to plastic surgery clinics. You’re different, going straight to Cai’s Hospital."
"..."
This driver was terrible at making conversation. Wang Jian had no idea how to respond. In this situation, he suddenly began to regret not agreeing to let Cai Xing’s driver pick him up. Why had he been so pretentious? Now he had to suffer through this. In that moment, Wang Jian thought that owning a car would be a pretty good idea.
Fortunately, the driver wasn’t a complete fool. Seeing that Wang Jian didn’t want to talk, he stopped. However, Wang Jian distinctly heard the driver mumble a few unpleasant words under his breath, which only added to his irritation this early in the morning. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
It wasn’t long before Wang Jian realized the route was wrong. The driver was taking a detour, perhaps to vent his earlier frustration.
"Sir, this isn’t the right way, is it? Cai’s Hospital is in the south, so why are you heading east?"
The driver glanced at him in the rearview mirror and saw the fire in his eyes, but he replied leisurely, without a hint of guilt. "How old are you? I’ve been driving in this city for over twenty years. You think you know the roads better than me?"
"I..."
"I haven’t taken a wrong turn," the driver cut in. "This way is shorter."
The driver wasn’t using GPS; he was just driving wherever he pleased.
It took a great deal of effort for Wang Jian to keep from cursing. Watching the dot on his map get further and further from his destination, he finally said, "Stop the car."
"What?"
"I’ll get out here."
"We’re still pretty far. You want to get out here?"
The driver was surprised to meet such a tough customer. He had assumed that since Wang Jian was in a hurry, he would have to put up with the delay, but he hadn’t expected the man to just ask to get out. "We’ll be there soon," the driver said, trying a different tack. "Are you sure you want to get off?"
"Yes."
Arguing with this kind of driver was probably useless; he might even get scammed for his trouble. What should have been a half-hour trip had already taken that long, and they were still just circling the city. The best solution was to get out immediately and find another car to avoid getting stuck with him.
After getting out, Wang Jian hailed another taxi. Ten minutes later, he saw the building of Cai’s Hospital.
Two people were standing at the hospital entrance, followed by a row of doctors. They were clearly waiting for someone. The hospital was unusually bustling today because of this spectacle.
Chen Yan, a nurse at the hospital, was on the early shift. She encountered this grand reception right at shift change and was nearly scared out of her wits as she walked in.
"Is a high-ranking official coming?"
Chen Yan voiced the question on every staff member’s mind. A night-shift nurse who was lingering revealed a mysterious smile. She should have left already but had stayed behind specifically to see who was arriving. "When I was on duty last night, a patient was brought in by the police. I heard Chairman Cai himself gave the order."
"Really? Are they protecting some VIP?"
"No, I heard it’s a criminal who attempted murder."
Startled, Chen Yan looked bewildered. "Why send a murderer here instead of locking them up?"
"Good question. Do you know which department they were sent to?"
"Psychiatry?"
"Right. The person has a few screws loose. And since they didn’t actually succeed in killing anyone, they could be transferred here. Maybe if they’re diagnosed with a genuine mental illness, they can be acquitted."
"And that doctor waiting with Chairman Cai is a psychology expert who came all the way from the provincial branch."
"This must be someone really important. I don’t think even the mayor got this kind of reception."
"You can say that again..."
"They’re here... I think."
Just as she spoke, a taxi pulled up to the entrance.
"Is it this taxi?"
"No way. Don’t be silly."
It wasn’t just the nurses. Even the idle patients and staff hanging around the lobby all turned to look at the entrance.
The biggest difference between private and public hospitals was the number of patients. Resources in private hospitals weren’t as strained, mainly because there were fewer patients and more one-on-one VIPs. This led to a more comfortable experience, and the disparity in treatment compared to public hospitals was stark.
The patients who came here were all from families with some money or connections, but almost none of them warranted today’s grand lineup. Therefore, even they were filled with curiosity about the newcomer.
