Chapter 50: 50 Ren Yu is not quite right

When Wang Jian arrived at the clinic, he found that Ren Yu was already there. He still felt a bit jittery, so he immediately used alcohol at the entrance to perform a pre-surgical disinfection of his hands, washing them thoroughly from every angle. Only then did he feel at ease. His hands were now so clean that he wouldn’t have been afraid to put them in his mouth.

As soon as he stepped inside, he smelled the familiar scent of disinfectant. Ren Yu had just finished mopping the floor and was airing out the room.

Wang Jian asked in surprise, "Why are you so early?"

Ren Yu was someone who loved to sleep in and usually complained that she couldn’t get up. Today was definitely an exception.

Looking at her, Wang Jian noticed the faint dark circles under her eyes. "You came in early even though you didn’t sleep well? You’ve changed, Xiao Yu."

"Mm. I was up reading a novel too late..." Ren Yu said sheepishly. "Before I knew it, it was past two in the morning, so I barely got any sleep."

"Then why did you even come in? You should have just stayed home and slept. This isn’t some corporation that’s going to force you to work," Wang Jian said with a laugh. "My clinic rarely has patients anyway. Our free clinic event just ended, and it’ll take more than a day or two for word-of-mouth to bring people in. If you’re tired, you can go home and sleep."

"You’re a medical student. Don’t you know how harmful it is to stay up late?"

Ren Yu yawned and muttered under her breath, "I just wanted to come and keep you company."

"Alright!" Wang Jian laughed. It was the first time he’d ever seen someone so enthusiastic about work. "What were you reading?"

"What?"

"I’m asking what novel you were reading that kept you up until dawn."

"Ah, well..." Ren Yu, who had been tidying the desk, stiffened. Her face turned slightly red as she mumbled the title, her voice as faint as a mosquito’s buzz. "It’s called *Taoyuan Monster Village Doctor*..."

"Huh?" Wang Jian had heard her but was baffled. What kind of book is that? I’ve never heard of it. He asked, "What genre is it?"

"It’s just one of those online novels," Ren Yu said evasively. "Anyway, you don’t read novels, so why are you asking so many questions?"

"I was just making conversation. Don’t get so agitated. I’ve got nothing to do right now, so why can’t I look it up?"

"No!" Ren Yu exclaimed, cutting him off. "That book... it’s not for you."

She struggled for a moment but couldn’t think of a convincing reason, because the real one was impossible to say. She couldn’t very well tell Wang Jian that she’d been fantasizing about him and Sister Qian as the main characters, could she? And the plot... it wasn’t scary or anything, but it had made her blush and feel all tingly, making it impossible to sleep. In the end, she only managed to drift off from sheer exhaustion after clamping her legs together. Could she say something like that out loud? Of course not. She might tell a close girlfriend, but it was an absolute non-starter with Wang Jian. How would he look at her after that? Just imagining the scenario made Ren Yu’s cheeks flush.

Wang Jian narrowed his eyes, confused. Why is she blushing all of a sudden? Then, it dawned on him. He grinned. "Looks like our little Xiao Yu is growing up. Staying up half the night to secretly read racy books. No wonder you couldn’t sleep."

"Nonsense!" Ren Yu scoffed, retorting quickly. "It’s a romance novel, not the kind of book you’re thinking of." Still, she added silently, it’s not unreasonable for a romance novel to have scenes like that, right?

"Oh?" Seeing the girl getting flustered, Wang Jian decided to stop teasing her. He put on his white coat and said seriously, "Alright, alright. I still think you should go home and get some sleep. A patient might come in later, and it wouldn’t be good for them to see you in this state."

Ren Yu asked curiously, "A patient? What patient? Why don’t I know about this?"

"It’s perfectly normal that you don’t know. I’m the doctor here," Wang Jian said, rolling his eyes at her. He explained, "I ran into Liu Zi this morning. He’s bringing his girlfriend over for me to take a look at."

Ren Yu said in astonishment, "That rascal actually has a girlfriend?"

Wang Jian didn’t reply, but he scoffed internally. Of course Liu Zi has a girlfriend. In fact, he has many. Besides, who says rascals can’t find love? To each their own. It’s just a girlfriend. Xiao Yu is still so young and naive, making a big deal out of nothing.

The two were idling in the clinic, and Wang Jian didn’t mind teasing her a bit more to pass the time. "Are you just jealous that he’s in a relationship?"

As expected, his words made Xiao Yu defensive. "Me? Jealous of him?" She pointed to herself, then gestured at her figure. "With my looks... the line of guys trying to date me would stretch from the village entrance to my front door. If I wanted a boyfriend, I could get one in a minute."

"Hahaha." Wang Jian didn’t doubt her. With Ren Yu’s face and figure, plus her height of 170 centimeters, she could easily be a model with a little styling.

"So, did you date anyone in college? How many?"

"...No... I’ve never dated anyone." Ren Yu bit her lip. The question was humiliating. She was already twenty, but forget dating—besides Wang Jian, she barely had any male friends at all. So how the hell was she supposed to date anyone?

"No way!" Wang Jian sighed in disbelief. "Are the guys at our school really that useless? A girl like you, and not a single one managed to win you over?"

"That’s just because I have high standards."

"Is that so? What’s your type?"

The question made Ren Yu’s heart flutter. She glanced up, and her eyes immediately met Wang Jian’s. Why is he still staring at me after asking? She stammered hastily, "I... I don’t know."

"That won’t do," Wang Jian said, playfully ruffling her hair until it was a total mess. He then added with satisfaction, "You have to date while you’re young. Otherwise, you’ll end up regretting it after graduation, just like me."

Ren Yu pouted. She had wanted to retort with something like, "None of your business," but whenever Wang Jian touched her head, she automatically grew docile. Besides, she really enjoyed the feeling.

"Stop messing with my hair!" she protested weakly.

Wang Jian felt like he was petting a cat, so he ignored her and continued to run his fingers through her hair. Suddenly, he heard a soft whimper and his hand froze, instinctively wanting to pull back.

But Ren Yu let out another soft sound and grabbed his arm, preventing him from pulling away. She rubbed her cheek against his palm, her eyes growing hazy. Then, she stuck out her tongue and delicately licked the center of his hand.

A tingling, electric sensation shot up Wang Jian’s arm. He froze, stunned by her sudden change in behavior. He drew a sharp breath. Where did she learn this stuff? A strange heat filled him, and he felt an immediate physical reaction. He took a few deep breaths, looking at the girl, not knowing what to make of her. Remembering her earlier response, he cautiously stroked her head again. This time, Ren Yu threw her arms around him in a tight hug.

His hardness pressed directly against her waist, and Wang Jian gasped.

"I like this so much," she whispered. "Please, do it again."

Wang Jian raised an eyebrow, about to oblige, but a commotion from the entrance cut him short. It wasn’t a small noise, either; he could hear a man and a woman arguing and shoving each other.

The sound snapped them both back to reality. Ren Yu darted out of Wang Jian’s embrace, her face beet red, completely unable to look him in the eye.

By now, the people were at the door, their voices growing louder.

"Believe me, this doctor is really amazing!" a man’s voice insisted.

"But you didn’t tell me he practiced Chinese medicine!" a woman retorted.

"What’s wrong with Chinese medicine? It’s a treasure from our ancestors! It’s powerful stuff!"

"I’m not going in..."

"What do you mean you’re not going in? Get inside!"

After another burst of scuffling, Liu Zi stumbled in, pushing a young woman ahead of him. She was slim and wore a Japanese-style school uniform. A black garter strap was fastened around her right thigh, visible just under the hem of her skirt.

Wang Jian glanced at her and came to a conclusion. If it weren’t for the heavy makeup making her look older, her real age would be about the same as Ren Yu’s. This wasn’t just a wild guess. He didn’t judge age by faces alone; a person’s overall physical condition and skin texture were far more telling. A young person’s skin tissue is completely different from an older person’s.

"So young?"
