Chapter 277: 271 Getting on the Right Track

One month later, after the documentary received the green light, it was quickly scheduled. It would replace a popular idol drama during primetime, and to better match its content and message, the TV station even chose a more intriguing title—*The Uneasy Path of Medicine*.

After all, a documentary is a documentary, so it made little splash when it first aired. That was, until Wang Jian appeared. His medical skills were so miraculous that people online began to claim the documentary was fabricated, calling it a fantasy film.

Competition among TV stations was already a mix of overt and covert struggles. The move by Angel’s station to use a documentary to fill a primetime slot had surprised their peers. Now, with accusations of "faking reality," colleagues in the industry mocked them endlessly in private group chats.

Angel had hoped for instant fame. Seeing the underwhelming results had already put her in a sour mood, and encountering these accusations from her peers was like adding fuel to the fire. It caused her several sleepless nights, and the stress had clearly taken a toll on her appearance.

If she were just going to work every day, looking a bit off wouldn’t have mattered. But as it happened, Angel had arranged a dinner with Wang Jian to celebrate the documentary’s launch. She wanted to look her best, wearing a pretty dress and black stockings to make a good impression on Doctor Wang, but the acne on her face was too prominent to be covered even by foundation.

A man like Wang Jian—still single, medically skilled, handsome, and even rumored to have subdued a fierce criminal—is the kind of man you only find in dreams. It was impossible for Angel not to have some ideas about him.

The thought that their first date might leave a bad impression left Angel completely out of sorts. By the time she arrived at the designated restaurant, she was still in a daze.

They had agreed to meet at a Sichuan restaurant in the city center, known for its bold flavors and delicious food.

When Angel arrived, Wang Jian was already standing at the entrance. Delighted, she hurried over. Just as she raised her hand to greet him, her toe caught on something. Her face stiffened, and before she could react, she pitched forward.

If it weren’t for Wang Jian’s quick reflexes in catching her, she would have fallen flat on her face right at the restaurant’s entrance.

"Are you okay?" Wang Jian wanted to laugh, but out of respect for Angel’s dignity, he held it back. "You went pale. What did you trip on?"

Angel pulled away from Wang Jian’s embrace, her pale cheeks flushing red with humiliation. They both looked toward where she had stumbled. A paving stone was jutting out, likely run over by a car. Such things were common in small cities, especially after it rained.

Angel stomped her high-heeled foot in flustered annoyance. "I’m going to report this to the municipal office tomorrow! Complain about their poor maintenance. Hmph!"

This time, Wang Jian couldn’t hold it in and laughed out loud. He had to admit, Angel was quite cute when she was flustered.

The first time Wang Jian met Angel, he had thought she was pretty. But he’d seen his share of beauties, and while Angel was attractive, she didn’t particularly stand out. Seeing her now, however—this capable and assertive journalist with the temperament of a young girl—created a charming contrast that was far more appealing than mere beauty.

"Reporter Angel, you don’t look very well. You should probably avoid anything too spicy later. That said, eating a little spicy food to work up a sweat can boost your metabolism, so it might have some benefits."

Hearing this, Angel chuckled. "Seems like I picked the right place today, then."

Wang Jian nodded in agreement. "Indeed. But you should also eat more bananas lately. The effect would be even better."

"What?" Angel was puzzled, but Wang Jian just smiled and walked into the restaurant, leaving her standing there, bewildered.

Bananas? Why should I eat bananas?

After a moment’s thought, Angel suddenly remembered one particular benefit of bananas... they aid in bowel movements.

She huffed in embarrassment before clicking after him in her high heels.

She certainly trusted Wang Jian’s medical skills, but she never imagined he could diagnose her constipation with a single glance. His diagnostic skills in Chinese medicine were nothing short of divine.

At that thought, Angel made up her mind. After dinner, she would go straight to a fruit stand and buy a couple of pounds of bananas. From now on, one in the morning and one at night.

The two of them sat at the table, where Wang Jian ordered some dishes he specifically chose to suit Angel’s health. This Sichuan restaurant was known for its spicy food, which came in two varieties: an aromatic, oil-based spicy and a more pungent, stimulating spicy. The latter was obviously unsuitable for Angel in her current condition, but the aromatic spicy was tolerable as long as she didn’t eat too much. They ordered five dishes and a soup—quite a feast.

After the waiter left, an awkward silence fell between them. Since Wang Jian didn’t initiate conversation, an anxious Angel took it upon herself to find a topic. She decided to bring up the recent events concerning the documentary.

Wang Jian wasn’t surprised. He had been following the situation and was aware of the rumors online. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"It’s not that strange, really," Wang Jian said. "You can’t please everyone, so it’s normal for a documentary to get some criticism."

He knew his abilities transcended the realm of traditional medicine, so it was natural for ordinary people to view his skills as something metaphysical.

"If they saw your medical skills for themselves, they wouldn’t be saying these things." Seeing that Wang Jian was unfazed, Angel felt her own worries lessen. "Besides, the station discovered that our competitors were driving a lot of the negative buzz. We’ve already started addressing it, so things should stabilize soon. You don’t need to worry."

"It’s fine, I’m not concerned about the naysayers. The documentary is clearly having an effect; many people have started coming to the village from other places seeking medical help," Wang Jian said. "Moreover, the initial goal was just to show people that we shouldn’t focus only on urban development while neglecting the villages. I heard the higher-ups have already allocated funds to plan a rural healthcare system. If this documentary becomes popular, it might even attract medical students to come work as doctors in the village. Now, that would be wonderful."

Angel agreed with him, and her mood brightened. They chatted idly as their food began to arrive.

"I heard you’re going to Capital City soon?" Angel asked, feigning indifference as she casually placed some food on her plate.

Wang Jian nodded. "Yes, I have a task in Capital City. I leave tomorrow evening."

This trip to Capital City was regarding the National Doctor matter. Both elders had spoken, making it hard for him to refuse. A key reason he could go was that Chairman Kang had learned a great deal. Unexpectedly, he had even crossed the threshold into Spiritual Power and could now sense the presence of spirit, which marked a huge improvement in his Chinese medicine skills.

From Wang Jian’s perspective, Chairman Kang was just a beginner, but he was on the right path and was more than capable of running the village clinic.

Before he left, Wang Jian visited his elder brother one last time. Unfortunately, his brother’s mental state had collapsed again. He didn’t even recognize Wang Jian and only muttered about wanting to kill someone.

His sister-in-law, Xu Qian, went with him. Seeing that scene, she broke down in tears.

Although Xu Qian and her husband were no longer together, they had once shared a life. After her tears, Xu Qian’s resolve to move forward only grew firmer, without a trace of hesitation.

Of course, Wang Jian was unaware of these changes in her. Xu Qian and Cai Qiong saw him off at the train station, only leaving reluctantly after watching him go through the gate.

On the ride back, Cai Qiong suddenly asked, "Why aren’t you going to Capital City with him?"

The question made Xu Qian turn to her in surprise, only to be met with Cai Qiong’s gentle smile. Xu Qian understood instantly—this girl had known all along.

Xu Qian looked out the window and asked in return, "And why aren’t you going?"

Xu Qian knew Cai Qiong’s heart just as well; their feelings were an open secret to each other.

They both sighed, but in the end, neither gave voice to the troubles on her mind.
