Chapter 264: 258 Rest

Wang Jian, who was in the middle of standing up, froze. Seeing the smile on Lu You’s face, he knew the story about the virus hadn’t completely fooled this sly old fox. Lu You’s words were clearly a probe.

Wang Jian chuckled, not bothering to hide his interest. "Since it’s an antique, of course I’m interested. Mr. Lu, what made you suddenly think of this?"

Lu You also laughed. "I nearly died. It put a lot of things into perspective."

Like hell I believe you!

"Well, that’s great," Wang Jian replied. "Be sure to let me know when you find it."

Looking at the smile on Lu You’s face, Wang Jian didn’t believe a single word. This crafty old fox must be after something. If he truly intended to donate it to the state, why would he call a doctor like him? From start to finish, Wang Jian himself had never once brought the object up.

The two men tacitly fell silent, neither one breaking the façade. To an outsider, it was a touching scene between a doctor and his patient.

It wasn’t until Wang Jian had left the room that he smiled and glanced back at the ward, his expression indescribably strange.

He had figured it out: the man’s dream of immortality was still very much alive.

But to Wang Jian, that was just a fool’s dream. He doesn’t have many years left, yet he’s still fixated on such elusive things.

Wang Jian’s interest in the cauldron stemmed purely from that strange, black energy. Although Lu You now had his eyes on him, Wang Jian wasn’t about to get tangled up with a dying man. Besides, he had also managed to resolve Li Long and Zhao Hu’s troubles, so it wasn’t a total loss. When he thought of his Yin Yang energy, Wang Jian almost laughed out loud. In truth, he had made a huge profit.

Returning to his own ward, he found that Xu Qian hadn’t fallen asleep. She was staring wide-eyed as he returned, just in time to see the joyful look on his face.

Xu Qian asked, "What’s got you so happy?"

"Someone invited me to a treacherous feast," Wang Jian said with a laugh, naturally lying down beside Xu Qian.

Xu Qian deliberately made some room for him. The bed in this private room, while slightly wider than standard, was still a single bed, leaving little space. Even after she moved over, there was only enough room for them to lie pressed against each other. His words made her wonder if she’d misheard. "A treacherous feast? What’s there to be happy about?"

Seeing Wang Jian just chuckle without elaborating, Xu Qian rolled her eyes. Unsure of what he meant, she didn’t press him further. The early autumn night had turned chilly. She pulled Wang Jian closer and said gently, "It’s getting cold at night. Don’t catch a cold. Keep the blanket on."

Her soft, gentle words sent ripples through Wang Jian’s heart.

"You too, sister-in-law..."

Xu Qian originally disliked Wang Jian calling her ’sister-in-law.’ However, over time, Wang Jian constantly vacillated between changing how he addressed her and not. Since she couldn’t persuade him otherwise, Xu Qian had simply grown accustomed to it. "I’m covered up just fine, don’t worry."

"Alright." After fixing the blanket around Wang Jian, Xu Qian turned to her side and said calmly, "Let’s sleep. The sky will be light in about three hours."

After that, there was silence. Wang Jian didn’t speak again, either. He reached out to turn off the lamp by the bed, and the entire ward was instantly enveloped in quiet.

At three or four in the morning, the whole building was silent, much quieter than a typical hospital. If Wang Jian had looked outside, he would have noticed some plainclothes soldiers still lurking about, but he didn’t have the spare mental energy to pay attention to what was happening outside. With the woman beside him so close, it wasn’t long before he started to feel warm.

Even though it was early autumn, lying so close together made Wang Jian feel hot. Yet he didn’t dare move carelessly for fear of disturbing Xu Qian, so he could only endure it.

Under the covers, Wang Jian grew hotter and hotter, unsure if it was the stuffy room or his own restless heart. He was too hot to sleep. Just as he was debating whether to slip out from under the blanket, Xu Qian turned over and hugged him. After this continued for a while, Wang Jian sneakily stuck his feet out from under the blanket and felt much better.

Xu Qian’s breathing was steady and her pulse had slowed, a clear sign she had fallen asleep. Her eyelashes still quivered slightly, as if she were dreaming. She must have been exhausted. After a whole night of fear and worry, she could only rest easy once she knew Wang Jian was completely fine.

Wang Jian gently stroked Xu Qian’s hair, a small smile touching his lips as he thought about this. His movement caused her to frown slightly, but she quickly relaxed and snuggled deeper into his embrace, showing no signs of waking. Only a few minutes had passed, yet she was already in a deep sleep.

Seeing her like this, Wang Jian dared not move a muscle, terrified of accidentally waking her. Bathed in the moonlight, he simply gazed at her sleeping face.

They say sleepiness is contagious. As Wang Jian watched her, it wasn’t long before he, too, unknowingly drifted off to sleep.

When they woke up again, it was already past eight in the morning.

"How come no nurse came to check on us?" Xu Qian, groggy with sleep, had been awakened by the sunlight streaming in. Seeing Wang Jian still asleep beside her, she patted him gently, and he opened his eyes.

"This is a private room, and I’m already awake, so of course no one would come to bother us," Wang Jian said. Although he had only slept for three hours, he was fully alert, showing no trace of drowsiness. Xu Qian was a different story. A single look at her face revealed how tired she still was; there were faint dark circles and bags under her eyes.

"Woken up by the sun?" Wang Jian chuckled. "I’ll draw the curtains. You can sleep in. Don’t worry, no one will disturb you. You can sleep until you wake up naturally."

Wang Jian slipped out of bed and walked toward the window. Xu Qian just hummed in agreement, turning onto her side and closing her eyes again.

It was truly hard on her. She usually went to sleep by nine or ten, but last night she didn’t get to bed until three or four in the morning. It was no surprise she was this exhausted.

After drawing the curtains, Wang Jian wasn’t sleepy himself. He said softly, "You get some more rest. I need to go see Master."

"Mmhmm," Xu Qian mumbled in a daze, nodding instinctively before falling asleep again, completely unaware of him leaving.

Wang Jian had never seen this side of her before and found it incredibly endearing. Not wanting to disturb her, he tiptoed out and gently closed the door.

Wang Jian had been to Cai’s Hospital before and knew the layout fairly well. After leaving the ward, he headed straight for the elevators. He pressed the ’down’ button, but then remembered something. He canceled the call by pressing and holding the button, then pressed the ’up’ button instead.

If he recalled correctly, Cai Qiong hadn’t gone home last night either. Knowing her as he did, he knew exactly why. Now that he was awake and well, it was only right for him to check on her.

After reaching the top floor, Wang Jian walked a few steps to the director’s office. Just as he was about to knock, the door opened from the inside.

Cai Qiong stood there, looking meticulously put-together, clearly surprised to see him. "Why are you here?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"I just woke up and came to see you. Have you had breakfast?" Wang Jian smiled. He could tell at a glance that Cai Qiong was wearing makeup to cover the poor complexion from a sleepless night, but the bloodshot whites of her eyes gave her away. "Why didn’t you sleep a little longer?"

Cai Qiong’s gaze shifted away. In truth, she hadn’t slept at all, kept awake all night by what she had witnessed with him and Xu Qian.

She could only force a smile. "I woke up hungry and was just about to head to the cafeteria. I was planning to bring some breakfast back for you two."

"Let’s go together!"
