Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 212 - 206 Travel Together
Seeing Wang Jian’s message, Yu Yen and the other two were immediately stunned.
After asking a senior they knew, they found out Wang Jian was a big shot who wasn’t afraid to challenge authority.
Any spark of enthusiasm they had was instantly snuffed out. Yu Yen slowly typed in the group chat, "Third Bro, who exactly is this senior of yours?"
Chairman Kang didn’t know how to answer this either.
Over the past few days, he’d come to understand that Wang Jian’s medical skills were learned from his own master and had very little to do with Teacher Song. This was the main reason why his attitude toward Wang Jian had grown increasingly courteous.
If Wang Jian were a true disciple of Teacher Song, he could have used that connection to call him "Senior Brother" and benefit from the association with a clear conscience. But Wang Jian’s medical skills didn’t have much to do with Teacher Song. This made Chairman Kang feel somewhat inadequate even calling him "Senior Brother," to the point that his form of address slowly changed to Doctor Wang.
So he, too, really wanted to know Wang Jian’s background.
Instead of directly answering Yu Yen’s question, Chairman Kang said, "My senior brother is extremely skilled. From what I’ve seen following him around, I can say there’s no illness he can’t handle. Some diseases that require surgery in modern medicine, or are difficult for even Chinese medicine to manage, are just minor ailments he can resolve with ease.
"And my teacher mentioned that my senior brother is about to pioneer a new field of medicine."
This statement was undoubtedly a bombshell.
Yu Yen and the others began to think that Chairman Kang was either bragging or had been completely duped.
"If you guys have time, you should come visit. I can show you for yourselves," Chairman Kang said, not caring whether they believed him or not. "Recently, a crew from Shan Province TV came to film a documentary about village doctors. If you come over soon, you might even run into them."
After sending the message, Chairman Kang put his phone aside and went to take a shower, unconcerned with how Yu Yen and the others would react.
The three of them sat in their dorm room in silence for a moment before Yu Yen finally spoke up. "How about..."
His tone was tentative. "How about we use our couple of days off to go check it out?"
"Okay," Wang Lei and the other roommate chimed in. "I heard from Chairman Kang that the scenery there is incredible. It’s out in the mountains, with rivers and everything. It’d be nice to get away and relax."
"That’s right."
"You guys should bring your girlfriends along, too."
Ostensibly, they were planning a leisure trip, but they knew very well what they were really after. To make the excuse seem more plausible, Yu Yen specifically added, "Hey Wang Lei, haven’t you been pursuing that girl from Han Country? She likes to travel, so why don’t you invite her to come with us?"
"Is that okay?" Wang Lei was taken aback for a second before quickly asking, "Wouldn’t that be inappropriate?"
Yu Yen laughed. "What’s so inappropriate about it? A trip with guys and girls is the perfect setup for you to make a move. Who knows, you might leave as two singles and come back as a lovey-dovey couple, hahaha."
His laughter was a bit suggestive, but those who got it, got it.
As the dorm’s resident strategist, Yu Yen had given his buddies plenty of ideas, including the main plan for Chairman Kang’s last venture. Although it had ended in failure, Yu Yen still pinned the blame on Chairman Kang. After all, it was Kang’s own fault for being a bookworm.
Wang Lei thought it made a lot of sense. He excitedly opened his chat app and sent a message to the girl from Han Country.
Before she had even replied, Wang Lei was already fantasizing about what could happen on the trip.
Hotel escapades, sleeper-car romance, a tender moment in the mountains...
A silly smile was plastered on Wang Lei’s face. If anyone had seen him, he would have been mercilessly mocked.
After a short wait, a message came back—she agreed to the invitation. Wang Lei nearly leaped from his bunk, almost smacking his head on the bed frame.
With that, their little travel squad’s itinerary was set. In two days, they would depart for Shan Province. They would see the mountains and the rivers, and while they were at it, find out if what Chairman Kang said was true or false.
「But that was a story for later.」
The news that the TV station was in Paigou Village to film something had spread through several neighboring villages and had even reached many people in town. The number of patients seeking treatment doubled...
In the city, however, only government officials and people within the medical system were aware of the situation.
Seeing the village committee courtyard packed with people again, Li Dayu felt as if he had been transported back to the day of the free clinic.
Fortunately, having learned from last time, Li Dayu immediately called over the several villagers who had helped before. They organized the queue and managed the consultations, keeping everything orderly.
Angel and her crew observed all this with amazement. In their work group chat, colleagues gathering footage in other places were all complaining about the chaos in the villages, the messy queues, and so on. None were like Paigou Village, where the order was on par with the automated queuing system of a top-tier hospital.
Feeling fortunate, Angel and her team began to see Li Dayu, the village chief, in a new light. With their sharp eyes, it was easy to see that his organizational skills were the sole reason things hadn’t descended into chaos.
In reality, most of the people who came to see the doctor at first were just there for the spectacle, nursing minor ailments they would normally ignore. But once they arrived and saw the fixed cameras in the courtyard and consultation rooms, they all decided to stay. This was the main reason the crowd was as large as it had been during the free clinic. It had to be said, in a village, nothing attracted more attention than being on TV and having a large group of outsiders arrive in cars.
This clinic now had both.
The Shan Province TV station’s work van, parked outside the village committee, was impossible to miss.
The villagers in line, though sitting under the courtyard awning, all had their eyes fixed on the village entrance, chatting amongst themselves.
"Wow, Paigou Village has really made it big. The TV station is here filming all the time."
"You’re right. They were just here a while ago, and now they’re back again."
"This is different from that interview last time."
"How is it different?"
"Last time it was just reporters interviewing a few people. This time, I heard they’re filming a show."
"A show?"
As they spoke, the group glanced at the surveillance-like cameras placed all around, leaving no blind spots. Seeing the devices, they all instinctively lowered their voices.
"They must be here specifically to film Doctor Wang."
"Oh, Doctor Wang is truly amazing. We all saw it during the free clinic... He’s going to be famous now, isn’t he?"
"I bet it won’t be so easy to see him in the future, huh?"
"What are you all worrying about? Who gets sick every single day? Our village only has so many people. You really think Doctor Wang won’t have time for us?"
"That’s a good point."
"..."
Angel and the others could hear the conversations outside clearly through their monitoring equipment. Hearing that Wang Jian had a good reputation among the nearby villagers and learning about the free clinic, Angel immediately sent a message to Cai Qiong, asking if there was any useful material.
She was starting to understand one thing clearly: the story of Wang Jian, the village doctor, couldn’t be compared to those from other places. When it came time to edit the documentary, his story would have to be presented as a prime example. Only then could they highlight the real problems with rural medical care and how those problems might be solved. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Even after just one day, Angel had already identified a key problem. In these villages, simply getting medical treatment for a serious issue was a major challenge. Paigou Village was relatively well-off; its roads were paved with concrete, allowing ambulances to pass through conveniently. Distance was the only real drawback. But many other villages weren’t so lucky. Not only were their roads poor, but they also lacked a clinic like this one. They couldn’t get treatment for major illnesses, let alone minor ones. When treatment was out of reach, all they could do was endure it. Over time, this fostered a terrifying habit: they grew accustomed to the idea that illnesses could heal without medicine, accustomed to not seeing a doctor, accustomed to just toughing it out. This mindset could easily turn a small ailment into a major disease, completely breaking down a person’s health. At that moment, Angel’s resolve to make this documentary truly great hardened...
Just then, a commotion suddenly erupted in Paigou Village.
A man covered in blood came running over, looking as if he’d come from the mountain.
He was carrying another man on his back, who was crying out in pain.
