Chapter 163: 158 Tutor

"Ren Yu!!"

When Wang Jian and Ren Yu walked over, Chairman Kang noticed them as well. The first person he saw was Ren Yu. Her fair complexion was already striking, but the white dress she wore today made her even more dazzling. This was the main reason the pair had been the center of attention since they first entered the university gates.

Ren Yu, however, couldn’t have cared less. She simply wanted to look nice for Wang Jian.

Chairman Kang had just raised his hand to greet her when he instantly regretted it, because his gaze fell on her posture. Ren Yu, known as the "Ice Beauty," was openly strolling through the university with her arm linked through a man’s.

What the hell... Chairman Kang almost thought he was still dreaming. Besides him, what man at this university is worthy of her?

Fury flared, but when he got a clear look at Wang Jian’s face, he was left speechless.

Isn’t that the older brother from next door? Damn it. Chairman Kang was suddenly filled with regret. It seemed someone had beaten him to the punch. If only I hadn’t gone back to Capital City on a whim, I could have been the one to take advantage of the opening.

Yes, Ren Yu had been going through a major life change and was at her most vulnerable. If he had been there, he might have actually had a chance. It wasn’t an unfounded idea. His roommates had told him more than once about seizing opportunities and playing the hero to save a damsel in distress. But now... how could he not be filled with regret?

However, he wasn’t a complete idiot. Though his mind was swimming with envy, jealousy, and hatred for Wang Jian, he wouldn’t do anything too rash. On the contrary, he found himself becoming curious about this man. He noticed that while the man was touring the campus, he showed no curiosity, only an expression of reminiscence.

This sparked a thought in Chairman Kang’s mind. Could it be that this man is also an alumnus of our university?

"Ren Yu, you’re finally back on campus." Chairman Kang didn’t shy away from the situation, acting as if he hadn’t seen their linked arms at all. As Ren Yu drew closer, he greeted her, "Classes are about to start."

Ren Yu’s return to campus was indeed rather late. She didn’t engage with his comment, simply nodding in acknowledgment.

Not feeling awkward in the slightest, Chairman Kang turned to her and asked, "And this is?"

Although he recognized Wang Jian, Chairman Kang chose to feign ignorance. Ren Yu wasn’t stupid and didn’t fall for it. He’d been to the village, so how could he not know Wang Jian? Moreover, Chairman Kang had been present when that incident happened. He definitely knew who Wang Jian was.

Ren Yu didn’t have a bad impression of Chairman Kang, but she only considered him a friend. In her opinion, he was a bit pretentious. He liked to beat around the bush and was never direct—qualities she thoroughly disliked. This made it impossible for her to ever be attracted to him. In short, they could be friends, but anything more was out of the question. The mere thought of spending every day with someone whose intentions you constantly had to guess was exhausting.

At that thought, she glanced at Wang Jian, a wave of affection washing over her.

Before Ren Yu could speak, Wang Jian introduced himself and shook Chairman Kang’s hand.

"Wang Jian?"

The name sounded familiar to Chairman Kang. It had rung a bell back in Paigou Village, and hearing it again now, combined with the way Wang Jian had been looking around the campus, he finally understood why.

"Don’t tell me... you’re Senior Brother Wang?"

"Senior Brother?" Hearing the question, Wang Jian gave Chairman Kang a surprised look as a possibility dawned on him.

As expected, Chairman Kang smiled and said, "My professor is Song Yijin. Do you know him, Senior Brother?"

Wang Jian was slightly stunned. Of course, he knew him. Song Yijin had been his professor at Kyoto Medical University and his mentor during his master’s program. It was safe to say that besides Xu Changqing, Song Yijin was the one who had guided him along the path of medicine.

"HAHAHA," Seeing Wang Jian’s expression, Chairman Kang knew he had guessed correctly. "It really is you, Senior Brother Wang! No wonder your name sounded so familiar. When I saw how comfortable you looked on campus, I suddenly remembered something our professor once mentioned."

Hearing his university professor mentioned made Wang Jian frown. Chairman Kang, however, showed no signs of stopping. Since Wang Jian remained silent, Chairman Kang kept talking while Ren Yu listened with curiosity, as she knew nothing about his professors.

In truth, a large part of the reason Wang Jian hadn’t fared well in Capital City over the years was related to this very mentor. It wasn’t that they were enemies, but a conceptual misunderstanding about past events had caused the old man to hold a grudge against him. Because of this, Wang Jian never felt he could ask his former professor for help, even when he ran into difficulties at the hospital.

Chairman Kang, however, had no idea what was on Wang Jian’s mind. In his experience, Elder Wu held Wang Jian in extremely high regard and often spoke of him, which showed how much the old man cared for his Senior Brother Wang. What Chairman Kang found puzzling was why, over all these years, he had never once seen this Senior Brother Wang come to visit their professor. He had only ever heard his name, never met the man himself.

He never would have imagined that he’d finally meet this mysterious Senior Brother while pursuing a girl. What gave Chairman Kang an even bigger headache was that the girl he liked had now clearly become his Senior Brother’s girlfriend.

This was incredibly awkward. If I’d known, I never would have gone to the village and made a fool of myself.

Wang Jian was taken aback. Hearing that his professor still thought of him came as a surprise, prompting him to ask, "Does the professor really mention me often?"

"Of course," Chairman Kang nodded without hesitation. "It’s happened more than once or twice. I couldn’t be mistaken."

"How has he been these past few years?"

Wang Jian had assumed it would be good enough if his professor wasn’t cursing his name; he’d never expected to be remembered so fondly. Wang Jian’s lips curved into an unconscious smile.

Chairman Kang laughed. "As for whether he’s well, you should go see for yourself, Senior Brother."

"Is he at home or at the university?" Wang Jian didn’t refuse. It had been two or three years, after all. Even if his professor had been genuinely angry, that anger should have faded by now. Besides, he was no longer in Capital City, and it would be harder to visit him in the future.

Although the old man wasn’t as old as his Master, his health wasn’t nearly as robust. Wang Jian had assumed his professor would have retired by now; the thought that he might still be teaching was a surprise.

"He’s at home," Chairman Kang said, as if guessing his thoughts. "The old man retired last year. He’s at home recuperating."
