Chapter 133: 128 make a bet

It was no wonder Wang Jian was overthinking things. After all, those words had come directly from Cai Qiong’s mouth.

When it comes to women... with other women, does that count as being taken advantage of?

Wang Jian hadn’t slept well, largely because he was agonizing over this very question. He couldn’t stop imagining the possible scenarios, which made it even harder to fall asleep. But the strange thing was, despite his restless night, he was still full of energy when he came out in the morning.

What puzzled Wang Jian even more was that with his current hearing, he could pick up the whimpers of a cat napping thirty meters away, yet he hadn’t heard a single sound from Xu Qian’s room.

Now, Wang Jian felt like he had ants crawling all over him, so anxious that he wanted to kick the door down and burst in to see what was going on for himself. If he’d actually had the guts, he would’ve done it last night instead of waiting until now.

Just as Wang Jian was having a staring contest with Xu Qian’s door, it opened from the inside.

Cai Qiong emerged, lazily rubbing her long hair. Judging by her drowsy, slightly puffy face, it was clear she had drunk too much last night and then overslept.

The moment Cai Qiong closed the door behind her, she spotted Wang Jian. It was hard to miss him, given the way he was staring.

"What are you doing?"

As soon as she spoke, Cai Qiong noticed Wang Jian’s gaze shift from her eyes slightly downward. Curious, she followed his line of sight. Her face immediately flushed red, a mix of shame and anger.

Because she had just woken up and had only casually adjusted her clothes, one of her shoulders was completely bare, revealing a hint of cleavage. With her hair casually draped over the other side, the effect was even more alluring.

Cai Qiong knew exactly what Wang Jian was looking at. "What are you looking at?" she spat. "Haven’t you seen one before?"

The moment the words left her mouth, Cai Qiong regretted them. Her mind was still foggy from last night’s drinking, like a bowl of mush.

Wang Jian smirked. He really hadn’t seen Cai Qiong like this before.

Cai Qiong, fuming and guessing what his staring meant, decided to turn the tables. "Were you just wondering if I did anything to those two last night?"

Damn.

Wang Jian’s mouth fell slightly open and his eyes flickered before he quickly regained his composure. He couldn’t believe she had voiced his exact thoughts.

"So, did you or not?" Wang Jian asked in a low voice, pretending to be calm. "You told me yourself that you like women."

"..."

Seeing Wang Jian trying to act composed when he was actually very anxious, Cai Qiong felt a secret delight, though she didn’t quite understand why. In truth, she had been too drunk last night. After helping the two women into the room, she had simply taken a shower and passed out. She had just woken up and was about to go wash up and get something warm to drink when she ran into Wang Jian.

She certainly hadn’t had the energy or time to make a move on the other two women. However... she was more than happy to see Wang Jian squirm.

So, in response to Wang Jian’s question, Cai Qiong simply gave him a small smile. Gathering her hair, she walked past him to go find her toiletries.

Wang Jian could do nothing but push the thought down.

Cai Qiong saw his reaction and felt a flash of glee. Some people just need to be taught a lesson like this.

When Ren Yu got up, she quickly washed up and left the house.

Wang Jian knew she was going home to pack, so he didn’t stop her. He’d offered to help her move, but Ren Yu insisted she didn’t have much. Ever since her mother died, Ren Jiacheng had hardly bought her anything memorable. She only had a few changes of clothes. Ren Yu told Wang Jian not to come, but when Xu Qian offered to go with her, she didn’t refuse.

Seeing the two of them leave, Cai Qiong asked in surprise, "Why aren’t you going with them? Aren’t you worried they’ll run into Ren Jiacheng?"

Wang Jian chuckled. "Knowing Ren Jiacheng, he probably hasn’t been home since he got that six million yuan yesterday. Xiao Yu must know this as well, which is why she decided to go over as soon as she woke up."

Cai Qiong looked baffled. "It’s been a whole night. He still hasn’t come back?"

Wang Jian shook his head and sighed. "Spoken like someone who’s never gone hungry. He’s never seen that much money in his life. The first thing he’d do is go on a wild spending spree. If he’s ruthless enough, he probably didn’t just stay out last night—he might not even come back to this house at all. Of course... I mean, not until he’s spent all the money.

"You have to understand, for people in our village, whether they go out to work or to study, the ultimate goal is to make money and get out.

"So..." Wang Jian finished with a shrug, his meaning obvious.

Cai Qiong hadn’t expected Wang Jian to be so certain. "He wouldn’t leave without even packing his things, would he?"

Wang Jian sneered. "What do you think someone like him owns that’s worth keeping?"

"But he wouldn’t just abandon the house, right? Even buying a new place takes time."

Cai Qiong was at a loss for words, her expression clearly showing her confusion as she continued, "Besides, is money really that important? What’s so bad about the mountains? Transportation is convenient now, the houses we build are comfortable, we have internet and cell service, the air is good... Why would anyone want to leave?"

Wang Jian laughed at her words. "If I thought like you, I probably would have come straight back home after graduation. And if I don’t think that way, Ren Jiacheng definitely doesn’t either."

His hometown had changed a lot over the years—he’d realized that the day he came back, and he didn’t regret his decision to return at all. However, he didn’t entirely agree with Cai Qiong. "Besides, Ren Jiacheng is a businessman. He knows a village is just a village. If you get seriously ill or have important matters to attend to, you have to go to the city. It’s very inconvenient. That’s why he’s so eager to get out. It’s not just him. I believe most people with money would do the same, except for the elderly.

"Then there are things like schools. You have to think more about your children’s education."

"..."

Cai Qiong frowned slightly. That, she could understand. But none of that explained why he would stay out all night. She was still skeptical that he hadn’t come home.

Seeing her expression, Wang Jian decided not to argue the point further. Instead, they made a bet on whether Ren Jiacheng was actually at home. They even set the stakes. Wang Jian deliberately chose a wager that he knew would annoy Cai Qiong, but to his surprise, she agreed.

Then, while Xu Qian and Ren Yu were out, the two of them started making breakfast.

When Xu Qian and Ren Yu returned, Cai Qiong rushed out impatiently, eager for news about Ren Jiacheng. Of course, she wasn’t foolish enough to ask Ren Yu, so she went straight to Xu Qian.

"So... Ren Jiacheng really wasn’t back?"

Seeing Xu Qian nod, Cai Qiong wore that same baffled expression again. "Is this some kind of nouveau riche mentality?"

Xu Qian gave her a strange look. "You’re the psychologist, why are you asking me? Haven’t you ever dealt with the nouveau riche?"

Cai Qiong made a peculiar face. "These days, the people who see psychologists are either intellectuals or the established wealthy, but never the nouveau riche. They would never spend money in a department that basically proves there’s something wrong with their head..."

Hearing Cai Qiong, Xu Qian burst out laughing. Cai Qiong had a point; it actually sounded about right. "Well, I guess the nouveau riche aren’t so special after all."

"Indeed..." Cai Qiong agreed, then recounted the bet she had made with Wang Jian. She watched as Xu Qian’s smile grew even wider.

Xu Qian said bluntly, "That was a really foolish bet."

"Why?"

"It’s not just Xiao Jian," Xu Qian explained, seeing Cai Qiong’s confusion. "Anyone who knows Ren Jiacheng would have made the same bet."

"Being nouveau riche is one thing, but Ren Jiacheng is... well, he’s Ren Jiacheng." After a moment, Xu Qian added, "It’s not that you haven’t studied the nouveau riche. It’s just that Ren Jiacheng himself is completely off the charts."

"I see," Cai Qiong nodded, admitting her miscalculation. She understood the psychology of people who come into sudden wealth—they often engaged in revenge spending, that much was true—but she had clearly underestimated this Ren Jiacheng.

The first law of psychology: everyone is different.

She had lost the bet. But people make mistakes. It was perfectly normal. It was just... when she thought of her wager with Wang Jian, Cai Qiong couldn’t help but frown.

Sure enough, she glanced toward the kitchen and her eyes met Wang Jian’s. His head was peeking out from the doorway, a smug, punchable look on his face.

Cai Qiong ground her teeth, shooting daggers at him.

But as soon as she turned away, a faint smile touched her lips.

So what if I can’t make a move on Xu Qian and Ren Yu? It’s no big deal.

That idiot. As if I was ever interested in those two women to begin with.
