Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 130 - 125 Eyes light up at the sight of money
HISS...
Upon hearing someone offer six million, the villagers were stunned. Almost instantly, a hush fell over the entire crowd. Most of them were locals, so they all recognized Wang Jian. Only the few who had tagged along for the excitement had to ask who he was.
"You don’t know Doctor Wang?"
"What about the free clinic a while back? Doctor Wang organized that."
"I thought that was the Cai Family."
"Pfft, Doctor Wang is the Cai Family’s doctor."
"He’s so young?"
"He is. I heard he was already a well-known physician back when he was in the Capital City."
"Hey, that’s old news. I heard he’s already a professor at his age."
"..."
Wang Jian was left speechless by the baseless rumors flying through the crowd. If the matter at hand hadn’t been more pressing, he would have stepped up to clear the air right then and there.
Ren Jiacheng was stunned when he heard the offer. He was even more shocked when he saw it was Wang Jian. "You have six million?" he blurted out.
It wasn’t just Ren Jiacheng who was skeptical.
Before Wang Jian could answer, Cai Qiong, who had been standing beside him, stepped forward. "And why shouldn’t he?"
"Doctor Wang works for our Cai Family. His signing bonus alone was six million."
Cai Qiong smiled and produced a check. "Here, this is a check for six million. It can be cashed at any bank."
She walked up to Ren Jiacheng and, giving him no time to react, stuffed the check into his hand.
Having done that, Cai Qiong turned and flashed Wang Jian a devastatingly beautiful smile.
She had clearly known he would make such a move. Returning to his side, she whispered, "Consider this six million the signing bonus for your new contract."
"New contract?" Wang Jian was taken aback. This was the first he was hearing of it.
To be honest, Wang Jian didn’t actually have six million on hand. However, with his medical skills, earning that amount wouldn’t be difficult. After all, there were very few wealthy people these days who weren’t sick.
Cai Qiong nodded. "That’s right. My dad was supposed to be the one to tell you, but since I’m here, he asked me to do it instead."
Wang Jian didn’t overthink it and simply asked, "Didn’t we just sign a contract?"
"Hahaha," Cai Qiong laughed softly. "We did, but that was before we knew just how incredible your medical skills were. You can even cure Gu Technique, and you helped our Cai Family solve such a huge problem. If all goes well, Gao Yang and his backers won’t escape, either. It would be terribly poor form for the Cai Family to offer you another contract at the same level after all that."
"..."
Wang Jian wanted to say that six million seemed like too much for a signing bonus, but he wasn’t one for false modesty. He truly needed the money right now, so he didn’t refuse. He could always repay the favor down the line.
His favors could save lives. By that metric, the Cai Family was actually the one getting the better end of the deal.
The Cai Family had indeed come with this in mind. It was a mutual, unspoken understanding.
Wang Jian murmured a "thank you," then moved past Cai Qiong and squatted down in front of Ren Yu.
Before speaking to her, he deliberately glanced at Xu Qian, who was holding the girl, and called out, "Sister-in-law."
At that title, Xu Qian’s expression subtly shifted, but she nodded nonetheless.
Only then did Wang Jian extend his large hand, gently stroking Ren Yu’s head. In that instant, the oppressive atmosphere that had clung to her suddenly shattered.
"It’s okay now," he said softly.
"It’s all over. You’ll have a good life with our family, it’ll be just fine. Don’t worry about tuition or anything; I’ve got it covered."
"Once you graduate and become a doctor, you won’t have to rely on anyone anymore."
"You..."
Wang Jian wanted to say more, but Ren Yu suddenly lunged forward, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug before bursting into loud sobs.
Seeing the girl cry her heart out, some of the onlookers from Paigou Village were visibly moved.
"Tsk, Xiao Yu has had it rough. Lao Ren beat her often, even when she was a child."
"That girl has always been so good and quiet. Why would he hit her?"
"You must not know, then. Lao Ren was always out gambling. When he lost money and had a few drinks, he’d take it out on people."
"Didn’t he beat Xiao Yu’s mother often, too, before she died?"
"That family is nothing but trouble."
There were no real strangers among these neighboring villages. If outsiders had said these things, no one would believe them. But when everyone saw that the speakers were the Ren family’s old next-door neighbors, the gossip became much more interesting.
In no time, the crowd was rattling off Ren Jiacheng’s bad habits as if they were family heirlooms, exposing everything.
Some, seeing Ren Jiacheng holding the six-million check, even started demanding he pay back his debts.
It was the sound of creditors that snapped Ren Jiacheng back to reality. But even as he came to, his eyes remained glued to the piece of paper in his hand, as if drawn by a magnet.
He failed to notice the odd behavior of Chairman Kang, whom he had mistaken for a rich young master.
The moment Cai Qiong appeared, Chairman Kang had clearly flinched in recognition. He had then furtively taken out his phone, snapped a picture, and started tapping furiously at the screen, obviously searching for something. Soon after, a look of bewilderment crossed his face. His gaze darted back and forth between Wang Jian and Cai Qiong, his expression a fascinating sight.
Before Chairman Kang could make another move, Ren Jiacheng spoke. Anyone who knew him could see the raw greed in his eyes.
"How do I know if this check is real or fake?" he asked, his mind completely consumed by the money, with not a single thought for Ren Yu. "You should just transfer it directly to my account."
Ren Jiacheng’s thinking was simple. First, he had no idea how to use a check. Second, he was worried he wouldn’t actually be able to withdraw the money. And while the string of numbers on the paper was nice to look at, it wasn’t nearly as reassuring as a long string of zeros in his bank account. So, he demanded a direct deposit, ignoring everything else.
Wang Jian said nothing. He simply glanced at Cai Qiong. Seeing her nod, he washed his hands of the matter.
Sure enough, Cai Qiong tapped on her phone for a couple of seconds, then held it up to Ren Jiacheng. "Your account number."
Joy flashed in Ren Jiacheng’s eyes. He struggled to contain his excitement as he rattled off, "xXXXXX8964!"
Fearing she might not have caught it in his haste, he repeated it slowly, "XXXX XXXX XXXX 8964."
The numbers had barely left his lips when, less than a second later, a PING sounded from his phone.
He picked it up and saw the confirmation message from his bank.
It’s here!
Ren Jiacheng’s heart leaped. This was far more profitable than marrying off his daughter. He had only discussed a bride price of a few hundred thousand with Chairman Kang. This, however, was six million—a seven-figure sum with so many zeros he was afraid of miscounting them.
Taking advantage of his glee, Cai Qiong decisively plucked the check from his hand and slipped it into Wang Jian’s pants pocket.
With the matter settled, Wang Jian had no desire to linger. He lifted Ren Yu into a princess carry and, with Xu Qian and Cai Qiong, pushed through the crowd toward the Wang family’s home.
In the crowd, Li Liping had been watching silently. Not long after Wang Jian’s group departed, she also slipped away.
Leaving with her was Chairman Kang.
In just a few moments, the scene in front of the Ren family’s house was empty. The crowd had dispersed as quickly as it had gathered, only now they all had a new topic of gossip for the dinner table.
Ren Jiacheng stood alone, initially unsettled by the sudden quiet. But then he looked down at his phone screen, and his excitement surged anew.
Without a second thought for Chairman Kang, he hopped on his motorcycle and sped off toward the city. He had to get to a bank and see that balance for himself.
"Thank you all."
As soon as they arrived at the Wang family’s home, Ren Yu seemed to feel much better. It was as if simply being away from that man was a relief. Wang Jian, however, knew she was mostly putting on a brave face.
"Silly girl!" Hearing her thanks, Xu Qian couldn’t hold back. She pulled Ren Yu into a hug on the sofa. "What is there to thank us for? Your Brother Jian is right. From now on, you’ll live with us. He has money, so we’ll live a good life. It’s no big deal. It’s all in the past now!"
"Yes! It’s all in the past!"
Cai Qiong didn’t actually know Ren Yu well, but the events of the day were more than enough to fill her with compassion for the girl. She gently rubbed Ren Yu’s back, echoing Xu Qian’s comforting words.
"Alright," Wang Jian interjected at the right moment. "Xiao Yu can stay with you tonight, Sister-in-law."
No one objected. The three women exchanged a glance and nodded in agreement.
Before he could say more, a sound came from the doorway. Seeing who had arrived, they were all taken aback.
