Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 102 - 97 Chiseling a Wall to Steal Light
The sensation of waking up in the middle of the night with the urge to pee is something everyone has experienced. But Wang Jian never expected to wake up to a sight like this.
"What are you doing here?"
"Didn’t you say you weren’t coming?"
It was Xu Qian. Wang Jian sucked in a sharp breath.
Only then did Xu Qian lift her head, pulling a strand of hair out of her mouth and spitting it out. "Didn’t you tell me to be quick?"
Xu Qian chuckled. "I was only gone for about ten minutes. By the time I got back, you were already snoring."
"Seems you were really exhausted today!" Xu Qian raised an eyebrow and continued, "But while you were sleeping, *it* certainly wasn’t. I can see it’s wide awake."
How could it not be? Wang Jian cursed inwardly. He had been having a wonderful dream, but the subject of his dream wasn’t Xu Qian; it was other people. One moment it was the passionate Li Liping, the next, the sweet and adorable Ren Yu.
It would have been strange if he wasn’t aroused. If the urge to pee hadn’t become impossible to ignore, he wouldn’t have woken up at all.
Seeing Xu Qian like this stirred Wang Jian deeply, yet he also felt the guilt of being caught, as if she had seen his very dreams. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"I thought you weren’t coming, so I just lay down and fell asleep without realizing it."
"Don’t worry, I’m not mad. I know you were exhausted today."
Hearing this, Xu Qian laughed lightly. She had, in fact, decided not to come back. But as she lay in her own bed, a chilling fear crept over her. Wang Jian had nearly died today. Every time she closed her eyes, the horrifying memory of him getting shot replayed in her mind. How could she possibly sleep? If she couldn’t hold him, she was terrified she would wake up to find her nightmarish vision had become reality.
So, in the end, she came. But just as she’d said, when she arrived, he had already pitched his tent and was snoring, lost in whatever dreams he was having. This all led to the current scene.
Wang Jian chuckled and took Xu Qian’s hand. "Come here."
Like dry tinder and a spark, the two of them instantly ignited the room with passion.
Cai Qiong, who lived on the second floor not far from Wang Jian’s room, had a habit of going to the bathroom before bed. After relieving herself, she was on her way back when she passed his room and instinctively paused. Memories of the day’s events flashed through her mind, and she considered knocking to say thank you.
However, just as she was about to knock, she heard soft rustling sounds from within. It was a kind of suppressed noise, accompanied by the creaking of the bed.
Cai Qiong’s face instantly flushed, her eyes widening in confusion. She was no child. During her time in the United Kingdom, some couples in the dorms wouldn’t even bother closing their doors when getting intimate. In such an open culture, there was little sense of shame about it.
So, while Cai Qiong had never partaken herself, she knew exactly what was going on. She’d seen enough of the world to know, and what’s more, she’d dated before. She was just curious about who could be in Wang Jian’s room. Had someone come to the Wang residence in the middle of the night to see him?
The question didn’t trouble her for long. As she listened, the woman inside spoke, and Cai Qiong recognized the voice.
Just as I thought! Cai Qiong mused to herself. She hadn’t been mistaken—there really was something going on between Xu Qian and Wang Jian.
At first, Cai Qiong thought their circumstances would constrain their relationship, but it seemed their feelings for each other hadn’t been hindered in the slightest. In fact, Cai Qiong knew everything Xu Qian had been through. After all that, any woman would have to be a fool or have rocks in her head to let herself remain trapped by that farce of a marriage.
Wang Jian is pretty outstanding, the thought surfaced in her mind. It was no surprise Xu Qian’s heart had been moved.
That said, Cai Qiong felt a strange sensation stirring within her.
As the noises grew clearer, she took a deep breath, only then realizing she had unwittingly pressed herself against the door, which was why she could hear everything so clearly.
He sounds so powerful... After just a brief listen, Cai Qiong concluded that Wang Jian wasn’t all talk and no action. Xu Qian’s voice was subdued, but that only made Cai Qiong more certain the sounds weren’t faked.
My god! Isn’t he supposed to be injured? To be like this even while injured... isn’t he afraid of tearing his wound open?
Cai Qiong scoffed silently, criticizing Wang Jian in her head. But Xu Qian’s moans, like a siren’s call, poured into her ears, impossible to block. With a door between them, the scene inside was left entirely to guesswork and imagination.
After pinching her own thigh hard, Cai Qiong finally managed to pull herself away.
But back in her bed, no matter how she tried, she couldn’t fall asleep. She had just gone to the bathroom, intending to sleep right after, but now, every time she closed her eyes, she pictured Wang Jian and Xu Qian together.
So annoying! They’re awful.
Cai Qiong frowned, her agitation tracing back to a boyfriend she’d had in university. He had seemed decent, kind, and considerate, but his true nature was eventually exposed. He colluded with his friends to lure her into a room, where she was nearly gang-raped. If she hadn’t found a burst of strength to push the drunken men away, she was sure it would have been over for her. The physical trauma was secondary; the psychological trauma was the true shadow that loomed largest. It was after that incident that Cai Qiong developed a fear of men.
But Cai Qiong hadn’t let those men off easily. In the United Kingdom, money talked, and the Cai family was not short on cash. She had little trouble getting them all sent to prison.
Now, however, she was perplexed. Her mind was filled with images of Wang Jian and Xu Qian locked in their passionate battle, and she felt something strange stirring in her heart. Once the thought started, it just wouldn’t stop.
Am I really afraid of men?
This night was destined to be anything but peaceful. Outside, the air was filled with the serene chirping of insects and croaking of frogs, but a stray cat, startled by the noises from the house, darted away into the darkness.
As the morning sun spilled over the horizon, Paigou Village fell into its quietest hour. Those who grew their own vegetables and didn’t need to shop for meat were still sound asleep. But those who had stopped farming and built new houses were already up, riding their bicycles to the market.
The village committee building was wide open, with one notable exception: the clinic was closed. The villagers all knew what had happened the day before, so this came as no surprise.
For those returning from out of town, however, it was a different story.
Li Shuang returned, dust-covered and weary. Without even going home, he headed straight for the village committee and made a beeline for the clinic. Now he just stood there, clutching his stomach and staring blankly at the notice on the door. After asking an old man from the village, he finally learned the whole story.
The kid’s only been back a few days. How does he always run into this kind of trouble?
Li Shuang had come looking for Wang Jian’s help, never expecting to find that Wang Jian was in trouble himself. Since the man was nearly shot and killed, Li Shuang was too embarrassed to ask him for anything.
He had gone out this time to build a business for himself, so his family would stop calling him a freeloader. Now that he was in trouble, his first thought was to ask Wang Jian, but Wang Jian was already in such a state. Li Shuang frowned. If someone from the Cai family intervened in this matter, it would be easily resolved. Of all the people he knew, only Wang Jian had a close relationship with the Cai family.
With Liu Zi being detained, Li Shuang had no idea what to do if he couldn’t find help. Waiting around was pointless, but bothering a man with a gunshot wound wasn’t right either. Their relationship wasn’t so close that he could ask for a favor like that. Li Shuang was well aware of where he stood. Wang Jian would probably help out of neighborly kindness and their shared history as elementary school classmates. But now that he was injured, all bets were off.
With no other choice, Li Shuang headed home.
In fact, Li Shuang was mistaken. The story of Wang Jian’s incident had been wildly exaggerated as it spread through the village. A simple graze had been twisted into a gunshot wound that required hospitalization, and that was the version Li Shuang had heard.
Just as he reached his house, he ran into his father, Li Dayu, who was about to leave on his bicycle.
"Dad."
Li Shuang’s voice was awkward. Li Dayu, startled by the unexpected encounter, paused. He lowered the leg he had just swung over his bicycle and pushed the bike over to Li Shuang’s side. He knew his son. Li Shuang clearly had something to say but was too awkward to bring it up. How could he not know his own flesh and blood?
Li Dayu knew his son had gone out to do something productive, and though Li Shuang hadn’t said much, he’d heard whispers. He was somewhat relieved to know his son was trying to do legitimate work. So, without waiting for Li Shuang to speak, he gestured down the road.
"Let’s walk. You can tell me on the way."
"Okay!"
The father and son walked along the small path out of the village, smiling and greeting neighbors as they passed. After a short while, Li Dayu finally asked, "Alright, out with it. What’s wrong?"
"Trouble with the business in the city?" Li Dayu asked, preempting him. Seeing his son’s surprised face, he knew what he was thinking. "Don’t give me that look. I’ve heard bits and pieces about what you’re up to. This city is tiny. You didn’t think you could sneak by me, did you?"
"Heh," Li Shuang chuckled nervously. "It’s about the medicinal herbs."
"Liu Zi and I got our hands on some herbs. We’d already found a sales channel. If things went well, we could have even supplied our village clinic."
Hearing this, Li Dayu laughed. "You rascal, the clinic’s herbs are supplied directly by the Cai family. There’s no room for you there." He chuckled again, then added with a nod, "But selling medicinal herbs is a legitimate path."
After his laugh, he became serious again. "So why did you come to find me?"
"They detained Liu Zi and seized our herbs. I know the guy who did it..." Li Shuang’s eyes were bloodshot, clear evidence of sleepless nights. "He used to be a hoodlum. He’s a businessman now, but his hands are still dirty."
"You’re talking about someone named Gao," Li Dayu frowned, recalling a name. "Gao Yang?"
"That’s him," Li Shuang nodded. "He grew up around here, so I know him. He used to run with a local boss before he got into business. For some reason, he’s got his eye on the herb trade now too."
Li Dayu’s brow furrowed. "I don’t think I can help you with this."
Li Shuang said, "Actually, I was planning to find Wang Jian. He has connections to the Cai family. Gao Yang acts tough, but he wouldn’t dare let out a peep in front of them, so..."
Now Li Dayu understood. Wang Jian was resting today because of his injury, and Li Shuang, probably knowing this, had come to him instead.
"Xiao Jian suffered a gunshot wound, so it’s not right for you to bother him..." Li Dayu had been about to say that asking Wang Jian would be useless anyway, but then he recalled what happened with Zhao Chunyang and suddenly changed his tune. "I have an old friend who recently got connected with the Cai family. Maybe he can help you."
"Come with me in a bit, and we’ll go see."
