Chapter 333: A FAVOR

Lucian was on high alert when he saw River stand up and then walk away.

"Hey, don’t kill him, okay? I don’t want that to weigh on me." Lucian was the one who had given River the information. And the first thing that crossed his mind when River said that she would handle this matter was that she was going to kill Mr. Hugo.

River pursed her lips. She didn’t have any intention to kill Mr. Hugo, but because Lucian said that, she turned around and threatened him.

"Fine, as long as you will not tell Ranon that I am here to meet you," River smirked, and Lucian shuddered because, in his eyes, she looked very creepy.

"I don’t see you." Lucian then hastily went into his car and drove away. Ares would kill him once he arrived; he should save himself first.

Meanwhile, River was surprised that Lucian had left while she was still inside his house. "Isn’t he afraid that I will do something bad with his house?"

But then, Lucian must have thought that if she truly wanted to do something with his house, he had little choice, especially since River managed to enter without triggering the alarm.

After River figured out everything she needed to know, she went to her car, which she parked not too far from Lucian’s house.

There was only one destination she had in her mind.

She remembered Mr. Hugo was one of the Lozens’ clients; he had put a hit on his business rivals, but at that time, it was not River who handled his case; it was Lyle.

"Where are you?" River called Lyle as she headed toward his apartment. "Are you at home?"

"Yes, why?" Lyle asked cautiously. They were still on good terms, even though they didn’t communicate often.

In a way, both of them were similar, as they left their previous lives and lived peacefully in their new ones.

Lyle took care of his mother, Rania, who needed extra attention, since the fall of the McKenna family hit her so hard, especially after she lost her daughter.

"I will be there in five minutes. I have a favor to ask you." River then hung up the call.

Five minutes later, she was already in front of Lyle’s apartment. She rang the doorbell, and he opened it immediately.

"What?" Lyle narrowed his eyes at her, seemingly unhappy to see River there. "How do you know I live here?"

"After we lived our lives, don’t you find that question ridiculous?" River pushed the door and entered the house. She walked past Lyle.

"What are you doing here?" Lyle followed River inside, but he didn’t insist that she leave.

"I have a favor." River sat down on the sofa, but she frowned when she saw that Lyle was topless. "What? Is there a woman here?"

"No. I just woke up." Lyle stretched his body and then pointed toward the kitchen. "There are a few drinks in the fridge. Get something for yourself. It will be great if you want to cook. I am sick of eating outside all the time."

"Do you think I am your maid?" River grumbled, and Lyle waved his hand and walked toward his bed to put on some clothes.

However, River went to the kitchen and checked the fridge; she took out some ingredients to cook something.

There were not many things in the fridge, but it would be enough to make three portions of meals. She found meat there and some vegetables.

"Cut this." River handed the chopping board and the meat to Lyle when he returned.

"I don’t know how to cut the meat." Lyle sat down. "How do you want me to cut it?"

River gave him a side look. "It is the same as when you cut Robbin’s fingers. That size."

"Hey, gross. Don’t compare that to food."

In the first thirty minutes, they didn’t discuss the favor that River was going to ask Lyle. They reminisced about the past, talking lightly and teasing each other as if they were still their younger selves when they accepted the mission for the first time.

"Yeah, I was almost dead because of you," Lyle grumbled, while River laughed.

"That’s your fault for missing your aim."

As they chatted, the two of them suddenly stopped talking and shifted their attention to someone approaching them in the kitchen.

Despite no longer being assassins, their instincts remained sharp.

However, it was only Rania, Lyle’s mother.

"Olivia?" Rania looked at River. She smiled softly. "What are you doing? I don’t know if you can cook. When did you come home?"

River glanced at Lyle, who showed a defeated expression.

Everything that had happened to the McKenna family had taken a mental toll on Rania, and now she saw River as Olivia.

Without missing a beat, River approached Rania and pulled her to sit on the chair. "Come here, sit here, Mom. I cook something for you."

Rania beamed when she heard that. "I am hungry. Lyle doesn’t give me food."

"No way, I gave you food, but you don’t like all the food that I bought or I cook," Lyle immediately protested.

"I am not surprised. I will not question the food that you cook, either." River clicked her tongue, and Lyle glared at her, but Rania scolded him.

"Don’t treat your sister that way. It is very rare for her to be at home," Rania chided her son.

"But she..." Lyle caught himself before he said the hurtful words. In the end, he shut his mouth and watched how his mother thought River was Olivia. She looked very happy, happier than in the past few months.

When the food was ready, the three of them ate together, but Rania kept putting more meat on River’s plate.

"Mom, that’s my meat!" Lyle protested.

"Sst!" Rania glared at him. "Your sister needs to eat more; you are already fat."

"These are muscles, not fat."

Hearing this, River laughed as she gladly accepted the meat from Lyle’s plate. Once they were done eating, Lyle washed all the plates, while River went to the living room to watch movies with Rania.

"She is sleeping," River said when Lyle came back after he cleaned up the kitchen.

"Thank you. She has not been this happy for a long time." Lyle then sat down on the sofa next to River. And while his mother was sleeping, she rested her head on River’s lap. "What do you want?"

River muted the television; the light atmosphere when they ate together had disappeared as they became serious to talk about the matter at hand.

"You know Albert Hugo, right?"

Lyle was familiar with the name; after all, he was one of the clients that he handled at that time. "Yeah, I know him."

"I want you to pay him a visit."

"A visit?" Lyle raised his brows. "I have retired. I don’t even kill a chicken."

"I don’t want you to kill anyone here," River said quickly. "I want you to talk to him."

"I am not good at conversation. Why don’t you go instead?"

"Do you think I am good at conversation?" River then told him the brief information about Rafael and Ranon’s business matter and her intention for Lyle to meet with Albert Hugo.

"Threatening someone is not my forte."

"This is not a threat; this is a warning."

Lyle then glanced at his mother, who was sleeping peacefully on River’s lap. River caressed Rania’s head out of instinct because Ashlyn was used to sleeping on her lap too, and she would sleep better when she caressed her head like this.

"Fine, I will do it, but with one condition," Lyle said. He looked at River.

"What?"

"I want you to come here often."

"I can’t come here often. I have a child and a husband to take care of."

Lyle furrowed his brows when he heard that. "You have not yet married Ranon Leighton, and that child is not even yours."

River had a slip of the tongue. From time to time, she felt as if she had a personality crisis because of it. "I thought of them as such."

"Are you serious with Ranon Leighton? You don’t know him well. He is scary, despite his calm behavior."

"Don’t worry. I can handle him."

Lyle squinted his eyes; he was still questioning River’s judgment. "You have poor judgment for a man."

Upon hearing that, River shot Lyle a disgusted look. "If you are referring to Arlo, well, he didn’t count, since I can’t even consider him a man. Do you want me to classify you in the same species as him?"

Lyle groaned. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

"I will come to visit your mother once or twice a month. That’s what I can promise you."

River had been out for a whole day, so when she returned, she immediately fell asleep, even though she wanted to wait for Ranon to come home.

She played with Ashlyn in Ashlyn’s bedroom, but she fell asleep without her realizing it.

However, when she woke up, she found herself already in her bedroom. Her clothes were taken off, and a blanket covered her.

Seeing this, River realized that Ranon must have brought her back, and he had taken off her clothes, too, since he knew her well enough that she liked to sleep this way.

Yet, when River looked around, she couldn’t find him.

River then decided to get off the bed and went to the drawer to steal one of Ranon’s clothes and wear it, but the drawer was empty.

"What? What is this?"
