Unexpected Marriage With Mr. Leighton: Rebirth of the Villain-Chapter 319: A LITTLE KISS
Ema was stunned when she heard the way River talked to her. She moved away from this woman and saw the cold look in her eyes, which gave her a chill down her spine.
"Now, leave." River smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. "Or I am going to throw you off the balcony."
Not only Ema, but also Laurel was surprised when she heard what River said. She was... a menace, but strangely enough, there was a huge part of them that believed that River would do exactly that.
Ema gritted her teeth; she looked at River with grievance.
"Scram, or should I ask those guards out there to drag you out?" River was pissed because Ema didn’t move.
And when her patience ran thin, she took action.
River put down her two bunnies on top of a table and then grabbed Ema by her elbow before she shoved her inside the elevator.
"What are you doing!? You don’t have any right to touch me! Don’t you dare..." Ema immediately shut up when she saw River point a gun at her face. She was unable to utter a single word until the door was closed and the elevator took her down.
Once Ema was gone, the killing intent in River’s eyes vanished, especially when she turned around and faced Laurel.
"Don’t worry, I would not really shoot her. She pissed me off," River said cheerfully, as she put away her gun. At this point, even Ranon couldn’t argue for River not to take her gun. "Don’t be scared." River patted Laurel’s shoulder.
It amused her to see the look on Laurel’s face. She was pale. But when River wanted to leave and see Ashlyn, Laurel suddenly snapped out of her shock and grabbed her hand to stop her.
"Where are you going? I will not let you meet with Ashlyn," she said with a tinge of fear in her voice. After all, she just stopped someone with a gun. River just pointed a gun at Ema. She was not going to let such a dangerous person meet with her baby niece.
"Why not?" River held back her smile.
"Do you think I will let someone with a gun meet with a child? You are dangerous." Laurel would be doomed if she let this stranger with a gun be near Ashlyn. Her protective instinct was alerted.
Now, she slightly regretted her decision and thought she had been mistaken to choose River. At the very least, Ema was less dangerous than she was. And Laurel had known Ema longer than River.
"I am dangerous," River admitted without any shame. "But if you are worried and do not allow me to meet with Ashlyn because I carry a gun..." River took her gun and saw how Laurel flinched. She shoved the gun into her hand. "Here, take it."
Laurel was shocked again as she held the gun. She was speechless.
"I heard that you also wanted to shoot Ema before. I know how you feel. I was so close to shooting her earlier, too. It’s a pity that Ranon gave you an empty gun." River grinned.
Ranon had told her what happened in passing when River kept pestering him to tell her about Ema. She had a strong feeling that the woman would go after Ranon, and she was right.
However, River was also glad that Laurel was there to keep that woman away, since usually Ranon just refused to deal with her.
Laurel was annoying, but River appreciated everything that she had done for Ashlyn and Ranon in her absence.
"Thank you, Laurel." River hugged her, which made her body stiffen, but even more when River kissed Laurel on the cheek.
Laurel was too stunned to speak, and her body froze. She watched River walk away from her, but she didn’t stop the other woman.
Meanwhile, River used this opportunity to get her bunnies and sneak around to reach Ashlyn’s bedroom; she had never thought that there would be a day when she would have a hard time meeting with her own daughter.
But when she entered Ashlyn’s bedroom, she saw that Renna was there with her daughter. Ashlyn was playing with her dolls.
"Can you leave us alone?" River wanted to hug Renna; she missed her so badly. Whether it was River or Hazel, Renna was the closest mother figure that they had.
Unfortunately, that was not possible. River had to keep her cool when she was around this old woman.
"I want to talk to Ashlyn for a while."
Renna didn’t answer River’s request, and she also didn’t move from her sitting position next to Ashlyn. She stared at River suspiciously.
Heaven. Why was it so difficult to talk to her daughter?
"I know that you don’t trust me, but Ranon has given me his conscience for me to talk to Ash." River couldn’t use the threat on Renna, which made things harder for her. "Even if you don’t trust me, you should trust Ranon’s judgement."
"Ranon can judge wrongly. He looks like he is very infatuated with you." Renna narrowed her eyes. "What do you want to do with her?"
"I want to give her these." River showed two stuffed bunnies in her hands. "Her mother wanted me to give her these."
Renna’s gaze flickered when she mentioned Hazel.
"She promised her these."
"Do you know Hazel?" Renna asked with shock.
"I know her more than anyone." River smiled at Renna. "Why don’t you make me that cucumber juice that makes you puzzled?" River grinned. "We share the same peculiarity, too."
Thankfully, Renna finally gave in and let River be alone with Ashlyn.
Once Renna left, it was only River and Ashlyn alone inside the room. Realizing that Renna was no longer there, Ashlyn immediately got up to go out of the room as well. She looked at River with a frown, pursing her lips.
"Hey, don’t look at me like that. See what I bring for you." River showed the bunnies to her. She was sitting on the floor, while Ashlyn was halfway to the door, three meters away from River.
The little girl stopped walking and stared at the bunnies.
"I promised..." River cleared her throat and corrected her words. "Your mother promised to bring you two stuffed bunnies, right? I am sorry... She couldn’t keep her promise sooner."
River felt her chest tighten again. She didn’t like an emotional moment. Whenever her emotions got the best of her, she would try to ignore them, treating them as nothing and numbing herself.
However, she couldn’t ignore her daughter.
"Here, take these... I want to say something to you, too." River tried to look cheerful. She smiled sweetly, though her heart was thumping wildly, waiting for Ashlyn’s response. "Baby, come here, please..."
River had to hold back herself from approaching Ashlyn and hugging her; she didn’t want to scare the little one and make her upset.
This situation was even worse than her first mission. River was not as anxious as in this moment. "Baby... don’t you want to hear what your mother said?"
River watched closely when Ashlyn’s brown eyes flickered. She scrunched her nose and then looked at the door, but then she looked at the bunnies again.
It lasted for a few seconds, but River felt as if it was longer than that when, finally, Ashlyn decided to come to her and take the bunnies.
River took her little hand, and she wriggled from her grip, but River didn’t let her daughter go. She started to throw a tantrum and hit River with the stuff in her hand.
Easily, River held her. She cupped Ashlyn’s little face, even when the little girl dropped her bunnies and clawed at her hands.
Thankfully, she didn’t have long nails, so it was rather harmless for River.
"Bunny eats a carrot." River then kissed the tip of her nose thrice. "Bunny eats a carrot." River repeated the word one more time.
That was the code that Hazel gave to her, so Ashlyn was allowed to speak again. But River was not sure whether it would work or not, because Ashlyn was so young. Ashlyn might have forgotten the code, and if she never spoke again, then the responsibility would fall on her.
"Bunny eats a carrot..." River repeated it with a trembling voice. She was at a loss when Ashlyn didn’t start to speak. "Baby... I am sorry. I am so sorry..." River cried. Tears streamed down her face, and she felt a strong sense of guilt.
Her daughter couldn’t speak... and River believed it was her fault.
"Please, Ash..." River stared at her daughter, and her hands slid down from her tiny face. She cried.
River didn’t know why, but she felt a deep sorrow. She couldn’t stop herself from crying. For someone who always controlled her emotions so well most of the time, it was something that had never happened before, and River didn’t know how to manage these boundless feelings.
River palmed her face and cried until her whole body was trembling. She was a bad person, but she hoped she would be a good mother.
However, she was not one, either...
River tried to stop herself, because she didn’t want to scare Ashlyn and make the little girl even more wary of her, but she couldn’t...
All of her bottled-up emotions came to the surface. All the feelings that she had been holding back came out, unrestrained.
But then, she felt something...
A little kiss on the back of her hands.
River put down her hands and saw that Ashlyn was staring at her. Slowly, her daughter came closer and hugged her...
