Chapter 293: I MISS YOU

"You lost them! How could you lose them?!" Arlo’s fury erupted when he learned they had failed to capture Hazel and her daughter. "Kill that boy and send his head to his father! We don’t need him anymore!"

Arlo was filled with rage. He was going to kill them all, but the thing was... he couldn’t even get out of bed. His leg’s condition became even worse. He had a permanent limp.

Before, he only had it when he was too exhausted, but now, even walking was difficult for him.

However, he was too stubborn to use his crutch. It hurt his pride to use it. Not to mention the numerous scars that littered his body. His nails had just grown back, but he always grimaced when he saw them, as he remembered how Ranon had plucked his nails one by one.

The pain from the torture kept haunting him at night, and during the day, it would be his hatred that consumed him.

Aubrey...

He was going to kill her, too. She wouldn’t get away easily by betraying him. That woman would pay for it, and Arlo was going to make sure of it.

"No, can’t do. The person has withdrawn their hit, so there is no point in keeping him here." Gayle stretched out his body and yawned, which made Arlo’s anger flare up.

"I want that boy to die!"

"Too bad. I have sold him." Gayle smiled at Arlo. He remembered the phone call with Ranon, as he made an offer to find Hazel and Ashlyn. Of course, the money that he offered would be more than the Barlowes could give him...

"Sold him?" Arlo narrowed his eyes.

"He must have been shipped away by now. Poor boy." Gayle waved his hand. "If there is nothing else you want to say, I will take my leave. Our deal ends here. I will transfer back the money, since I failed this mission."

"No." Arlo gritted his teeth. He didn’t need the money. It didn’t matter to him how much he lost; he wouldn’t be able to live if those people were still breathing freely. "I have another target for you."

Gayle stopped walking out of the room and turned around. "Who?"

"I heard Ranon Leighton had been working for you in the past. He quit the organization and joined the Leighton family." Arlo had learned his lesson well. He had his own way to gain the information. "I assume you have unfinished business with him. So, why don’t we start with him? You can deal with your personal matter, and I will get what I want. It’s a win-win deal for you."

Once Arlo took Ranon down, the rest would be easy.

"Hm. I am listening." Gayle leaned his back against the door and crossed his arms. "What do you want?"

"Hazel and her daughter are still missing. I want you to look for them." Arlo’s gaze turned vicious. "Kill them all."

Gayle chuckled. "I thought you had high morals, but I guess I was wrong. You don’t have any scruples about killing children."

Hazel managed to reach the main road. No one was following her. She wondered what had happened inside the McKenna family’s house and whether Olivia was fine.

However, there were other crucial things that she had to think about. She had to flag down a taxi.

People on the street would look at her with furrowed brows. Her appearance must have been very awful, as they didn’t recognize her as Ranon Leighton’s wife.

"Are you okay? Do you need help?" An old lady asked Hazel with concern, especially with blood on her shoulder and a little girl in her arms. "Do you want me to call the cops?"

Hazel shook her head. "Can I borrow your phone?" The old lady looked hesitant, but then she gave the phone to Hazel. "Thank you."

Hazel called Ranon’s office because she couldn’t remember his phone number. "Valerie? This is Hazel. Please give me Ranon’s phone number. This is urgent."

"Hazel? Are you okay?" Valerie was worried. She didn’t know the details, but she was well aware that something terrible was going on with her boss.

Valerie then told Hazel Ranon’s number. Hazel thanked her and was about to call Ranon.

But before she could do that, someone had approached her. It was Cam. Hazel couldn’t believe how relieved she felt when she saw him, not for herself, but for her daughter.

"Oh my God! Mrs. Leighton!" Cam ran toward Hazel and immediately informed the other men to gather here. "Over here, the car is waiting."

Hazel then thanked the old woman and handed back her phone. She then rushed toward the car with Cam, where Dunts and Rick had been waiting.

"Do you have some water?" Hazel asked once she was sitting inside the car. Dunts was on the phone; it seemed he was calling Ranon to inform him of her whereabouts.

"Mr. Leighton had his men around this area. He is already on the way here because he thought it must be the McKennas who had kidnapped you and Ashlyn."

Cam then told Hazel that they were planning to barge into the McKenna family’s house before they saw her.

"Mrs. Leighton." Dunts turned around to hand the phone to Hazel. "It’s Mr. Leighton."

Hazel grabbed the phone, she took a deep breath, and when she heard Ranon’s deep voice, she felt the urge to cry again.

"Hazel?"

"Yes, it’s me."

There was a moment of silence, as if they couldn’t find the right word to say. Hazel wished Ranon were here. She missed him so much.

"Are you okay?" Ranon was currently driving. His grip on the wheel tightened as he held back his emotions.

"Still alive," Hazel said, half joking to lessen the tension. "I miss you." Hazel felt her throat tighten when she said that.

She really did miss him. She didn’t even know how to explain this, but it was almost like a physical pain when she thought she would never see him again.

She should have known it a long time ago—that she loved him...

"I miss you too." Ranon’s voice softened. "I will get you there. We will meet again soon."

"Yes, we will meet again soon."

Ranon was very calm, and so was Hazel, but both of them knew what kind of storm raged beneath the surface.

They really wished to be in the presence of each other. Talking through the phone couldn’t make up for all the nerve-wracking moments they had to go through in the last twenty-four hours.

The thought of not being able to see each other had driven him crazy with anxiety.

"How’s Ashlyn?" Ranon finally asked about their daughter.

"She got a scratch and a bruise on her head, but she will be fine," Hazel said. She let her daughter drink. She blinked her eyes and looked at Cam. She drank greedily and coughed. "Let’s talk when we meet."

"Let’s talk when we meet."

Even though that should have been the end of the conversation, neither of them hung up the phone. Hazel could hear Lucian complaining about how Ranon was driving.

Meanwhile, Ranon could hear Hazel’s voice when she talked to their daughter.

"Slowly. Are you hungry?" Hazel asked as she patted Ashlyn’s back lightly. She kissed her daughter’s head and then looked at Cam, who was sitting next to her. "Do you have something to eat?"

"I think I have chocolate," Dunts said. He was sitting on the shotgun seat while Rick was driving. Two cars that Hazel recognized as Ranon’s men were following them.

"Thank you." Hazel took the chocolate from Dunts and opened it for Ashlyn, who was very excited. Her eyes lit up, but the little girl didn’t say anything.

Hazel wondered why she didn’t talk; only then did she remember what she had told her daughter. She chuckled.

"You are such an obedient girl." Hazel kissed her cheek.

On the other hand, through the phone, Hazel could hear Lucian complaining.

"I swear, I will never get inside the car if it’s you or your wife who is driving! Are you insane!? Slow down, Ranon!" Lucian was rambling like a grandma. "She is safe now. There is no need to be in a hurry; you will see her soon."

Inside the car, Lucian was in distress as she sat next to Ranon, while Ares looked comfortable enough sitting in the backseat. He seemed not to care about how Ranon was driving, as he finished a few things on his laptop.

At that time, Lucian got a call from Valerie, who informed him that Hazel had called her earlier.

"Yes, she is on the phone with Ranon now." Lucian gripped his phone tightly. "Keep talking to me, Valerie; distract me. I feel like I am going to have a heart attack."

At the moment, they were on the highway. They were close enough to the meeting point that they could see the Aspen River.

Hazel and the others must also be crossing the river bridge right now.

"What happened?" Valerie asked in confusion because Lucian’s voice sounded panicked.

However, when Lucian was about to complain to her, they heard a loud sound from Ranon’s phone. A loud crashing sound made your heart skip a beat, and several people were screaming.

And when they looked to their left, they could see a car running through the barrier and railings of the bridge as it headed down to the river below.

"Fuck!" Lucian was flabbergasted. "What...? No..."

"Hazel?" Ranon called for her; his voice was tight. "Hazel!"
