Chapter 282: A FUCKED UP FAMILY

"Our life is not exactly a fairytale." Logan sighed deeply, staring at the ceiling again, and Hazel did the same, as she was speechless upon hearing this confession.

"She groomed you."

"I know," Logan admitted readily. "I know how fucked up it was. I don’t need you to tell me, but I really thought she loved me at some point."

Hazel tilted her head and looked at Logan. She opened her mouth, and there were hundreds of nasty words she wanted to tell him, but she held herself back. Logan didn’t need that. He knew that was not right.

"I don’t know, Logan. I can’t imagine loving and thinking of a ten-year-old child sexually." Hazel shuddered only to imagine that. Now she was worried about Ashlyn. This world was crazy. It didn’t even spare the innocent children.

"I know." Logan nodded. "But, that’s how I feel."

"Does your son know that you are his father?"

"No, of course not." Logan then told Hazel that he had come to Grace’s house a few times and had even stayed the night there, on the pretext that he missed his babysitter, who had been a mother figure for him. "Archie thinks of me as his older brother."

Hazel couldn’t stomach this, but she didn’t have the heart to ask him to stop when he was so engrossed in his story.

Logan seemed to be sharing all of this not for Hazel’s benefit, but because he had kept this secret for far too long. It had become a burden he could no longer bear, and now he felt the need to unburden himself by sharing this information with her.

"You will give Greyson a heart attack if he learns about this." Hazel massaged her temple. She remembered how Grace would play with her, and Logan would listen to what she said.

Hazel didn’t remember if there was something worth being concerned about from their interaction. That’s why it was very scary that you couldn’t trust anyone a hundred percent, no matter how kind and likable that person appeared.

"I think that will be a good thing. He has lived for a long time. We need his inheritance."

"Are you serious?" Hazel raised her brows.

"No, I am not." Logan chuckled. Good thing he could find his humor again. "I love our father, even though he used to beat me up extra harshly."

"I can smell your sarcasm from here."

Both of them chatted for the whole night, but at some point, Logan was too exhausted, and he fell asleep. He leaned on Hazel’s shoulder, which made her frown.

"You are heavy," Hazel grumbled. She then laid his head down while she moved away from the sofa. If it were Ranon, she wouldn’t mind it.

However, after some time, Hazel was kind enough to slide a pillow under Logan’s head before she walked out of the room.

It was only two hours before Desgar and Arthur came to discuss what they should do with Gayle Lennox’s move.

Hazel then decided to call Dalton to check the situation with Ranon.

"He is still in the room. They have not yet come out for hours."

That was what Dalton told Hazel. Actually, it didn’t put her uneasiness at rest, because she was tempted to tell Dalton to barge into the room and check on Ranon.

But then, she should know better than to do that. It was not like Ranon was hopeless. He could protect himself.

Still...

The thought that something had happened to him made her stomach churn.

When Ranon arrived at the Leighton family house, he felt as if he had come here for the first time again. The giant building was very intimidating.

The sight of it alone made him uncomfortable.

However, at this time, the discomfort that he felt was different. The gates opened for him, and he drove past the extensive garden before he stopped the car in front of the main building. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

It was close to midnight now, and Daniel was probably already sleeping, knowing his plan worked well.

Dalton approached Ranon when he got out of the car and informed him about the situation around the house.

"Ema and Eilon are not here. They have been staying in her sister’s apartment for two days." Dalton then added. "There’s only Daniel. He’s been making a few phone calls to Aspen City in the last few hours, but he hasn’t met with anyone for two weeks—just a few people from the company."

Ranon nodded. He thanked Dalton for the information.

"Make sure to pick up the call whenever Hazel calls you, or else she will make a fuss and you will deal with her."

Dalton pursed his lips. "No, thanks. Your wife looks sweet and all, but she is the epitome of saying that looks can deceive you."

Ranon patted his shoulder. "Stay here; don’t make any move."

Dalton wanted to ask something else, but Ranon had gone inside the house. He went straight to Daniel’s bedroom and didn’t even bother to knock first as he entered.

"Ranon, you visit me so late at night," Daniel said when he watched his brother enter his bedroom as he pleased.

Currently, he was reading a book, lounging on the sofa next to the window, with the bright moon illuminating the room.

"Is it something urgent? Your expression looks awful."

"Where is Archie, Daniel?" Ranon didn’t beat around the bush. Daniel was familiar with this type of conversation, so he didn’t mind it.

"Who is Archie?" Daniel put down his book. He didn’t seem surprised to see Ranon looking for him in the middle of the night.

"Let’s not waste our time," Ranon said. He leaned his back against the wall across the room where Daniel was sitting. "Should you stoop that low to involve a child?"

Daniel opened his mouth, his brows furrowed, as if he was going to argue with Ranon again, pretending he knew nothing.

But after a second of it, he decided it was not worth it. Ranon had drawn his conclusion, and there was no point in fooling around.

This time, Daniel stood up. He walked toward the wine cellars and poured two glasses of wine for both of them.

"I see you are not surprised to see me standing up. When did you know?" Daniel handed one of the glasses to Ranon as he sipped his own.

"A few months ago," Ranon replied curtly. He was half a head taller than Daniel when both of them were standing up.

"I see..." Daniel nodded. He walked toward the sofa again and then sat down. "Don’t you want to sit down with me? This will be a long conversation."

"Tell me where Archie is, and then we can have the conversation that you want."

"He is not even related to you, Ranon. Do you really care about your wife now?"

The way Daniel talked and how he looked at him was different from what Ranon remembered. His brother had dropped all the pretense, and he didn’t care anymore to keep up with the act.

"Just answer my question, Daniel. Where is the boy?"

"The boy is fine." Daniel put down his glass on the table and stared at Ranon, who didn’t move from his position. He didn’t even drink his wine. "But, it’s not up to me. I have nothing to do with their plan. I only want the result. Whatever they are doing, it doesn’t concern me."

Ranon finally moved. He approached Daniel and put down the glass next to his empty ones. "Why do you want to kill me, Daniel?"

"If you are here, I think you already know the reason why I want to kill you."

Ranon could see a killing intensity flash in Daniel’s eyes. This was the sight that he had never seen from his brother before.

"Luciano is a target for you, but he is a brother to me!" Daniel grabbed Ranon’s glass and smashed it on the floor. The liquid stained his pants and Ranon’s. "You killed him and ruined everything."

Ranon’s expression was devoid of any emotion. When he spoke again, his voice was cold. "You had so many chances to kill me when I arrived at this house for the first time. Why do you have to waste your time?"

"Do you think I would be so kind to you if I knew you were the one who had killed Luciano?" Daniel narrowed his eyes. He pressed his lips together. "No. I didn’t know. I only learned about that four years ago. You would have died by now if I had known it was you."

"Yes, and probably the entire Leighton family will go down with me too, since I was the one who saved the company."

"You are very arrogant to bring that up. Do you think you are so important because of that?"

"I am only stating the truth. Sometimes, Denzel forgot about that, and now you too. He and you are the same in this case." Ranon leaned his body over. "Did Denzel really fall from the stairs on his own?"

Daniel held Ranon’s gaze for a long moment. The silence stretched out until you could hear the soft ticking sound from the clock.

"If you thought I killed Denzel, you are wrong. I didn’t. But I can say that I am not the only one who didn’t do anything when I saw Denzel fall from the stairs. He could have been saved if only Ema and I had done something," Daniel smirked. "This family is fucked up, you know."

"I know. I can see that."
