Chapter 32 - Something Strange Beneath The Dual Shades

So her suspicions had been true.

Atticus had been slaughtered just as his father was.

How could Orpheus have been so cruel?

And how could she have possibly allowed herself to be lost in his sweet kisses?

Furiously, Lady Karina threw up her hands.

"How can you possibly expect me to pass into the chapel when you have forbidden me from leaving the keep without an escort?" She asked, her tone flying like sparks.

"Moreover... I would have to pass through that... that forest of corpses to reach there and I have no desire to see those grisly trophies you have propped up for all to see."

His patience was wearing thin quickly.

"Would that be all that you have dragged me here to speak about, lady?"

Orpheus' impassive tone was borderline testing her last threads of patience as well.

The man's indifference to the situation was nearly insufferable.

Lady Karina shook her head, taking a few steps towards him until she was directly before him.

"Nay, it is not. I have been informed that one of your knights is taking liberties with one of my servants and doing with her as he pleases." Her tender-toned eyes glared at him.

"This absolutely must cease," she fired again. "I will not abide by this behaviour in the least."

Whatever last remnants of Orpheus' tolerance remained had vanished.

"What my knights do and to whom is none of your concern or business, lady. And you will not make demands to me."

Lady Karina could see the black frost mark on his neck ignite with an icy blue and the way his jaw ticked, as if fighting down the ice.

"Your knights are doing immoral things to my servants!" She barked despite her wariness of his surfacing magic.

Orpheus reached out, snatching Lady Karina by the arms and yanking her flush against his chest.

She gasped in surprise, having no opportunities to protest.

She could see the conflict brewing in his dual-coloured eyes as they bore into her.

And it was then that the lady had noticed something peculiar beneath the dual shades. At a glance, one wouldn't recognise it since the dual shades would throw them off.

But now that Lady Karina had paid careful attention to detail, she could see a layer of red beneath the dual shades.

It piqued her curiosity and she wondered if it was related to the man's magic or his anger.

"These are the spoils of war, my lady," Orpheus murmured, his grip tightening. "Surely you could not have possibly thought that death and destruction were the only means of compliance and conquest.

Lady Karina gazed back at him and she suddenly felt the same wave of fear she had when he first arrived.

She could feel something untoward and dark milling about him, almost as if it were ready to strike her.

Once again, her bold tongue was proving to be a hindrance.

"You are hurting me," Lady Karina whispered, wincing when his hands tightened too harshly around her arms.

Orpheus seemed almost apologetic but he did not show it to her. He loosened his grip but his arms remained around her, remembering how his knights had stared at her far longer than he welcomed.

"Did you have any other matters you wanted to discuss with me?" He breathed huskily, his eyes settling on her plump and inviting lips.

Lady Karina was barely an inch away from his face, knowing very well the inevitable would soon happen.

Orpheus was going to kiss her again and she could see it as clear as day in his eyes.

Her heart thumped loudly in her chest, racing ahead of catching her breath and knowing she should have done everything in her power to resist and push him away but lacking any will to do so.

Anger would make the man budge.

She had to attempt another tactic.

"My Lord," Lady Karina uttered softly. "Please, I plead that you please order your men to leave my servants alone. For decency's sake, I beg you."

Orpheus lifted an eyebrow. "Now that is a much better attitude, my lady. And since you have requested so politely, I will grant it."

Lady Karina breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you," she whispered. "There is one more thing."

Orpheus' head dipped lower, his lips just barely ghosting over hers. "What is it?"

"The...the boy...Atticus... Was he truly put to death?" Her lips trembled with uncertainty and her heart was spiralling out of control with a mix of hope and fear.

This question again.

Orpheus didn't want to answer it, but he knew the lady would persist regardless.

"He is," he lied without batting an eye.

After all, it was for the best. And if she had come to loathe him for it, then so be it.

Except he wasn't quite certain he could bear any more of her hatred.

"Was it... Was it done by your hand?" Lady Karina asked in a shaky breath.

Orpheus ceased his advances, gazing directly in her wavering eyes.

"Does that matter, my lady?"

She nodded unsteadily. "Please tell me the truth."

"It was not by my hand."

Why was it so important to her?

She seemed to go limp with relief in his arms, uncertain of why she prayed so fervently that it was he who had given the boy a cruel fate.

Orpheus' hand came up, grasping her chin and tilting her head up so that she could receive yet another hungry kiss from him.

But the lady wasn't quite finished with her affairs just yet.

"Orpheus?"

"Aye, my lady?" His usual deep baritone softened just a little, his thumb sweeping across her bottom lip.

"If I request something of you, will you follow by it?"

"That depends." He made his advance, suckling on her lower lip and tasting the sweetness. "What will you ask of me?"

Lady Karina drew in a sharp breath as the man kissed her with such force that it had sucked all of the air from her lungs.

Like before, her eyes fluttered closed despite her inner protests and she couldn't resist reciprocating his kiss.

She was losing her mind yet again.

And when Orpheus had broken the kiss to allow her a moment to catch her breath, Lady Karina made her next statement while panting.

"I...I do not want you to kiss me anymore."
