Chapter 311: Now that is something worthy to sweat for.

The night I went out with Sven was full of things I couldn’t explain in words. Aside from bantering with him every once in a while, I often found myself smiling over the small things that little town offered.

When we returned, things were the same. No one seemed to have noticed my disappearance — well, Lisha was worried sick since I couldn’t really hide anything from her. Although I didn’t tell Lisha I was with Sven all night.

Knock Knock...

I snapped my eyes as I knocked at Paris’ chambers. Although I enjoyed last night deep in my heart, I still rose early in the morning to check on my little brother.

"Paris," I called, turning to my left when I saw a maid approaching. She looked at me with evident surprise on her face while my brows furrowed. She wasn’t bringing water for Paris to wash his face, although she should be since it was too early for Paris to get up. Unless he didn’t make it here last night.

"My lady, are you looking for young master Paris?" she asked.

"Obviously. Did he make it back last night?"

"Yes, my lady. But the young master went out early to the training grounds."

I frowned. "That’s strange." I gazed back at her and didn’t say anything as I turned to see Paris on the training ground.

It was strange, indeed. How could Paris be on the training grounds? I expected him to be paralyzed on the bed after receiving punishment from the duke or he didn’t make it back and was lying somewhere helplessly. So, it baffled me how Paris was up and was in the training ground.

I walked through the hallways and ignored everyone I passed by until I reached the training grounds. To my surprise, Paris wasn’t as beaten as I thought he was. Instead, he looked as though he didn’t meet the duke last night as he was swinging his sword and beating all the knights he was sparring with.

’What is going on?’ I wondered, creasing my brows as I advanced in his direction.

"Is that all you can do?!" he yelled, making me cringe and stop from a distance where I could hear him clearly. "Really — how can you be so disappointing... Callie!"

As usual, Paris’ face brightened up as soon as he noticed me at a safe distance. Like a young boy, he walked over the knights loitering the ground and skipped his steps until he was standing in front of me. I looked up at him, studying his bright grin.

"You’re fine?" I blurted out.

"Of course!" he knitted his brows. "Why wouldn’t I?"

We gazed at each other with the same puzzlement dominating our faces, but for different reasons. I was confused since I had believed he wouldn’t be alright until now that I was standing before him while he was confused about why I thought so.

Had he forgotten the rules in this place? He shouldn’t be confused over such a thing since it was obvious.

"Didn’t His Grace summon you last night?" I broke the silence between us, watching him nod in response.

"He did."

"And?"

"And told me I should do better." He cocked his head to the side, hand on his hips. "I was also surprised since I thought he’d kill me, but apparently, he didn’t."

Paris’ expression then grew ugly as if something crossed his head. "It’s because of that damn wolf!"

"Pardon?"

"That wolf!" he grumbled, grinding his teeth. "His Grace said it’s because that damn wolf — I’m going to kill him! Did he think I need his help?! How insulting!"

As Paris’s complaints ran on, I simply furrowed my brows as I lowered my eyes. Sven helped Paris? But that was strange. Even if he pleaded and kowtowed to Octavian, the latter wouldn’t fulfill that wish easily. My father was too prideful his ego was bigger than the duchy.

What happened in this very training ground yesterday could be considered as bruising the duke’s ego. I couldn’t think of any leverage Sven used to make the duke agree.

I mentally shook my head. "Either way, what are you doing?" I tossed the questions at the back of my head, knowing wondering about them wouldn’t help.

"I’m training, obviously. So that I can challenge that wolf and teach him a lesson." Paris then looked back and spoke louder. "Until when will you stay on the ground, hah?! Should I ask someone to start digging a hole so you can rest there permanently?!"

He then faced me and sighed. "These people are so useless. How did they even enter the duke’s knight brigade if they’re this pathetic?"

"You’re just strong," I argued and he nodded.

"I can’t deny that, but it’s still disappointing." Paris suddenly quirked a brow and looked at me from head to toe. The way he looked at me caused my brows to creased, taking a step back on instinct.

"What?" I asked, witnessing how the corner of his lips curled up deviously.

"How about you spar with me, Callie?"

"Do you have a death wish?"

"Oh, come on!" he exclaimed in distress. "These turds are a bunch of useless sandbags. I need someone I could spar with! No one will be able to spar with me properly if not you!"

"No, Paris." I waved, turning around to leave. "I’m not in the mood to spar with you. I’m glad that you’re alright, so good luck with your training."

"Callie —" 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

"See you around."

I was truly not in the mood to sweat because the only reason I got up early in the morning was to check up on Paris. I still needed rest from last night’s activity. But I hadn’t gotten far when I stopped and turned around.

"What?" I narrowed my eyes, catching Paris’ mischievous grin.

"I’ll lend you the key to the level 2 dungeon for a day if you spar with me and win." His lips stretched even broader until his little canines were showing. "How about that?"

My eyes glinted as I smirked. "Now that is something worthy to sweat for."
