Chapter 263: An animal

THUD!

Upon the distinct thud of a severed limb landing on the ground, the nonstop exchange of fierce blows finally came to a halt as both figures leap back, a great distance between them. Deimos panted, catching up for air, eyes trying to see through Azazel’s figure through the thick fog.

The figure who rose from the thick fog had a missing arm. Deimos narrowed his eyes as he watched the shadow grow its limbs back. The emperor’s jaw tightened, his way of wincing as his muscle at the end of his severed leg clenched to stop its bleeding.

Taking Azazel’s arm cost him his leg, but... Azazel grew his arm back while he couldn’t. All he could do was to control his muscle to stop his bleeding.

Not good, he thought.

"I guess I am truly old." He finally realized that conserving even the tiniest energy was not smart. Although he had been giving his all, he still conserved a little energy so he wouldn’t exhaust himself out.

"Poor you." Azazel laughed, waiting for the fog to clear up for a bit so he could stare at Deimos eye to eye. "The man who used to be the strongest wolf... sadly, even you cannot fight the time. Apparently, I cannot sympathize since vampires had long-lasting lives."

"Hah... living an endless life just like the vampire... is something I will never get envious of."

"As expected, from a proud wolf like you." Azazel laughed and clapped as if he wasn’t dismembered multiple times already. Surely, his confidence was backed up by great power and he could gloat as much as he wanted.

He then crooked a finger, whistling as if calling for a dog. "Come. Let’s end your misery." He grinned when Deimos roared and leaped forward, dashing at the same speed — no, actually, he was even faster now that he only had one foot.

CLASH!

Azazel’s red sword blocked Deimos’ enormous mouth as he bit it with his sharp teeth. He ground his teeth, trying to push the mad wolf away. But before he could use more force, two large hands held his tensed shoulder.

His eyes dilated as he glanced over his shoulders and his pupils constricted when his red sword cracked under the wolf’s strong bite. Azazel held his breath as he looked at the fiery pair of eyes loomed over him.

"Wait..." came out a stunned voice, feeling the blades of his sword crack even more. "... what are you--"

CRACK!

Before he could even finish his sentence, the blade shattered ever so slowly. Deimos’s sharp teeth, still coated with fresh blood, opened once again.

He would bite Azazel’s head off, was what the child of evil thought, watching the emperor’s mouth stretch wide. All he could do for a split second was watch as Deimos move forward to his face without a second hesitation.

’Kill... kill all the wolf...’

Suddenly, a voice in Azazel’s head chanted those words repeatedly. He, out of instinct, held his hand out, and out of the thin red mist, another red dagger formed in his palm.

Slash!

Azazel plunged the dagger to the side of Deimos’ neck. However, it only slowed down the wolf as Deimos’ eyes glowed in red even brighter. His eyes moved down, catching Azazel’s blank eyes, sending a chill down his spine. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Fear. For the first time in Azazel’s life, he came face to face with dread.

"Tch!" Azazel ground his teeth and pulled out the dagger from the emperor’s neck, only to stab him once again. And yet, Deimos only squeezed the former’s shoulder and growled before moving his head forth.

Time seemed to stop between the two of them as Deimos endured the stinging pain of his flesh, getting repeatedly ripped, while Azazel’s assault continued and picked up its pace.

’I will die,’ Azazel thought as his body fell back until his back felt the ground. Deimos pounced on top of him, about to bite his face off.

*BITE*

Deimos, with all his might, gnawed Azazel’s face, making the latter writhe underneath him. Despite the writhing scream from the vampire, his teeth sank deeper into Azazel’s skin to his bones.

"Ahhh!!!" Azazel screamed, strangling Deimos while flinging his legs, feeling the bones of his face crack like brittle glass. But his screams faded in the sound of his growls before his teeth clenched.

Azazel’s feet stopped struggling, lying relaxed on the ground. His grip around Deimos’ neck loosened ever so slowly until it hit the ground.

Deimos spat out the part of his bones and facial features to the side. He knew Azazel, and this wasn’t enough to kill him. He tried to exhaust this vampire so his regeneration would slow down. Now was the time to actually take him down. While he wasn’t regenerating, Deimos had to make sure Azazel wouldn’t emerge from the pits of hell once again.

All humane morals carefully slipped out of Deimos’ thoughts as he pounded his hand that morphed into a wolf’s paw against Azazel’s broken face.

One...

Two...

Three...

Deimos lost count at the ninth time his paw crushed Azazel’s head until the latter’s skull was completely shattered with part of his brain squirting out. Even when the only movements Azazel’s body could do was the impact from each hard pounding, Deimos didn’t stop until his enemy’s head was nothing but smithereens.

An animal.

That was what filled his head for giving no mercy and for resorting to such heartless execution. But just as the emperor said, he would bow his head to anyone for his children. Same with he would become an animal, a monster, for his children.

After many pounding, Deimos finally stopped as his last punch barely touched the hollow ground his fist created. He looked at the pool of blood. The head was gone, replaced by pieces of flesh and bones.

"It’s over," whispered Deimos while panting, pushing himself away from Azazel’s body. As soon as he stood on his feet, he looked down at the lifeless body of his enemy. Even though it seemed things were done and he miraculously survived, the restlessness in his heart remained.

"It doesn’t matter," he breathed out, dragging his feet away from Azazel’s remained. "My children are still out there..."

This time, Deimos’s step halted as his breath hitched. His eyes slowly dilated, pupils, constricting, as he gazed up, only to see the red mist resurfacing from the thinning fog. His heart then pounded against his chest as he looked back.

There, he saw Azazel’s body rise to his feet, red mist forming on the empty space over his severed neck. Even without Azazel’s head, the latter’s finger erected, shaking it sideways as if taunting him.

’Ana...’ was the first thing that came in the emperor’s head as Azazel’s headless body suddenly appeared over him. ’... I failed.’
