Chapter 290: Fragments Of Power

The Night wore on, the shadows cast by the flickering candles dancing on the walls like restless spirits. Kyle’s mind was a whirlwind of questions, but he knew they needed rest. He glanced at Lucias and Layla, who were meditating, their faces set in concentration.

Elara sat cross-legged on the floor, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and even. Kyle wondered if she was asleep, but her voice was like a whisper in the darkness.

"Can’t sleep, Kyle?" she asked, her eyes still closed.

Kyle shook his head, though he knew she couldn’t see him. "Too much on my mind." he said, his voice low.

Elara’s eyes opened, gleaming in the dim light. "The vision, Lyra... it’s all connected. You just need to piece it together."

Kyle’s gaze drifted to Lucias and Layla, who were still focused on their meditation. "How do I do that?" he asked.

Elara’s expression was thoughtful. "Start with what you know. Lyra, the mission, the krael’s attack... it’s all part of the puzzle."

Kyle’s mind began to spin, threads of memory and possibility weaving together. He stood up, pacing the room, his footsteps quiet on the stone floor.

’Snow, can you pull up the mission logs?’ he asked silently.

[I have them, Kyle.] Snow responded.

The logs flickered to life in Kyle’s mind, a holographic projection of the mission playing out. He watched, his eyes scanning the footage, searching for anything... anything...

And then he saw it. A fleeting glimpse of a figure, tall and imposing, standing at the edge of the cave. The same figure Lucias had seen in his vision.

’Zoom in, Snow.’ Kyle’s voice was a whisper in his mind.

The image sharpened, the figure’s face still hidden in shadows. But Kyle saw something else. A symbol, etched into the figure’s hand. A symbol he recognized.

’What’s this symbol?’ he asked Snow, his mind racing.

[It’s an ancient mark, Kyle. A sigil of power, used by the Order of the Red Hand.]

Kyle’s eyes snapped to Elara, who was watching him with interest.

"Elara, what do you know about the Order of the Red Hand?" he asked, his voice low and urgent.

Elara’s expression was guarded. "They’re an ancient cult, Kyle. Rumored to wield dark magic, manipulate events from the shadows."

Kyle’s mind was racing. ’Snow, dig deeper. I want to know everything about this Order.’

[Of course future husband, anything for you. Though I would like to suggest some plans and decorations for our wedding.] She teased with a seductive tone, prompting a light chuckle from Kyle.

Already accustomed to her perverted ways. He didn’t blame her, no. There was no need hiding the fruits born, from a fellow cultured Dao master. But he was slightly worried about her rapid growth, threatening to surpass his lewd code.

The night wore on, the darkness outside pressing in like a living thing. And in the silence, the group waited, their senses on high alert, as the shadows seemed to grow longer, darker.

The night wore on, the air thick with tension. Kyle, Lucias, and Layla exchanged wary glances, their faces lit only by the soft flicker of the candles. They were trapped, unable to leave Elara’s cottage without risking exposure. The witch’s words still echoed in their minds, a reminder of the power she wielded.

Kyle’s gaze drifted to Elara, who was busy preparing a concoction on the makeshift altar. He didn’t trust her, not yet. ’Snow, can you detect any traces of Yua’s energy? Anything from her scan?’ he asked silently.

[I’ve been searching, Kyle. But there’s nothing. No residue, no signature... it’s like she vanished into thin air.] Snow’s voice was apologetic. [But don’t give up. Yua’s a skilled operative. She might be laying low, waiting for the right moment to make her move.]

Kyle’s jaw clenched. He had to believe Yua was still out there, watching over them. He turned to Lucias and Layla, their expressions mirroring his concern.

Elara’s voice was like a gentle breeze, breaking the silence. "You don’t trust me, do you, Kyle?"

Kyle’s gaze snapped to hers, his eyes narrowing. "What makes you think that?"

Elara’s smile was enigmatic. "I’ve seen it in your eyes, Kyle. The distrust, the uncertainty. But I assure you, I’m not your enemy."

Lucias snorted, his expression skeptical. "Save it, witch. We don’t know what you want."

Elara’s gaze didn’t waver. "I want what’s best for all of us. And right now, that’s survival."

The room fell silent, the tension palpable. Kyle knew they couldn’t stay here forever, but leaving meant risking capture. And Elara’s cottage was the safest place they’d found on Kraken so far.

The silence stretched out, the only sound the soft crackling of the candles. Elara’s eyes seemed to gleam with a knowing light, as if she understood the group’s predicament.

"You need to rest." she said, her voice gentle but firm. "You’ve been through a lot. The awakening, the visions... it’s all taking its toll."

Lucias and Layla exchanged skeptical glances, but Kyle could see the weariness etched on their faces. They were running on fumes.

"Snow, what’s the risk level here?" he asked silently.

[It’s low, Kyle. Elara’s cottage is well-shielded. I’d detect any intrusions.] Snow’s response was reassuring.

Kyle nodded, making a decision. "Alright. We’ll rest. For now."

Elara nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Good. I’ll prepare some tea, help you relax."

As Elara busied herself, Kyle leaned in, his voice low. "Keep an eye on her, Snow. Anything weird, wake me up."

[Got it, Kyle.]

The group settled in, the silence broken only by the sound of Elara’s gentle humming as she worked. The tea she handed them was bitter, but it did its job, easing the tension from their muscles.

As Kyle’s eyelids drooped, he felt a sense of unease, like they were waiting for the other shoe to drop. But exhaustion won out, and he drifted off, surrounded by the shadows of Kraken...

In the darkness, whispers seemed to seep into his mind, a soft, raspy voice whispering a single word: "Soon..."

Kyle’s eyes snapped open, his heart racing. But the room was quiet, Elara’s gentle snoring the only sound. It was just a dream, he told himself. Just a dream.

The morning light filtered through the cottage’s windows, casting a warm glow on the group’s faces. Kyle sat up, rubbing his eyes, feeling a bit more refreshed. Lucias and Layla were already awake, eating a simple breakfast Elara had prepared.

Elara turned to them, her expression serious. "Your injuries from the beta wolf... they’re more severe than I thought." she said. "You’ll need to stay here for two more weeks to fully recover."

Kyle’s eyes narrowed. "Two weeks?" he repeated, skeptical.

Elara nodded. "Yes. The dark energy from the wolf’s bite is stubborn. You need time to heal properly."

’Snow, is this true?’ Kyle asked silently.

[I’m afraid so, Kyle. The wolf’s energy is resisting treatment. Two weeks should do it, but.. I wouldn’t completely put my fate in her words.] Snow’s voice was cautious.

Kyle’s jaw clenched. Two weeks was a luxury they couldn’t afford. But if Snow confirmed it...

"What’s the plan, then?" Lucias asked, his voice neutral.

Elara’s gaze didn’t waver. "Rest. Heal. I’ll teach you more about your abilities, help you prepare for what’s coming."

Kyle’s mind was elsewhere, fixated on Yua. Where was she? Was she safe? ’Snow, any hints on Yua’s location?’ he asked.

[Still nothing, Kyle. But like I said, she’s skilled. She’ll be fine.]

Kyle’s expression didn’t change, but his grip on his cup tightened. He didn’t like this. Didn’t like being stuck here, relying on Elara.

The group’s silence stretched out, each lost in their thoughts. Elara watched them, her eyes knowing.

"I’ll get the Luminara." She said suddenly. "It’ll help with the healing."

Kyle’s gaze snapped to hers. "You have it?"

Elara nodded. "I do. I’ll fetch it." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

As Elara left the room, Lucias leaned in. "Don’t trust her, kyle." He murmured.

Kyle’s expression was grim. "I don’t. Snow’s watching her."

The air was thick with tension, the group’s instincts on high alert. Elara returned with the Luminara, its blue glow casting an eerie light on their faces.

"Here." she said, handing it to Layla. "This should speed up the healing."

Layla took it, her eyes wary. The group’s fate, once again, in Elara’s hands.

The Luminara’s blue glow cast a calming light on the group’s faces as Layla began to tend to their wounds. Elara watched, her eyes intent, as the crystal-like plant seemed to draw out the dark energy from their injuries.

Lucias winced as Layla applied the Luminara to his arm, but the glow soon eased the pain. "Thanks." he murmured.

Elara nodded, her expression thoughtful. "The Luminara is a rare gift. You’ll need it for the journey ahead."

Kyle’s gaze narrowed. "What journey?"

Elara’s eyes locked onto his. "The one to understand your abilities, Kyle. To harness the power of Kraken."

Kyle’s mind was wary. What did Elara really want? ’Snow, can you tell if she’s hiding anything about this journey?’ he asked silently.

[I’m scanning, Kyle. But Elara’s energy is... odd. Like she’s shielding something, but not necessarily malicious.] Snow’s response was cautious.

Kyle’s expression didn’t change, but his instincts were on high alert. "Tell me more." he said to Elara.

Elara’s smile was slow. "Kraken’s power is tied to its artifacts. The Order of the Red Hand seeks one... and I think you do too."

The group’s attention snapped to Elara. "What artifact?" Kyle asked, his voice low.

Elara’s gaze didn’t waver. "The Heart of Kraken. A crystal rumored to grant immense power... if you can survive the trial."

The air was thick with tension. Kyle’s mind was racing. The Heart of Kraken... was this what the Order wanted?
