They walked on the vast wilderness. The sun at high noon in late spring was already fierce, and Qian Yixiu felt her head spinning from the heat. But the wildflowers by the roadside were spirited, the delicate stems trampled by her older brother still defiantly bloomed upwards, showing a strong life force. Indeed, without such resilience, they could never bloom in this land.
Even the wild grass here couldn’t grow tall, with the tallest only reaching up to Qian Yijin’s knees, sparse and patchy. Only along the streams flowing from Xishi Mountain, the grass and wildflowers there were much more lush, with brightly colored petals swaying in the wind. Especially the gypsophila; under the midday sun, they shimmered, truly like tiny white stars scattered across the ground.
The two children hadn’t reached their home’s threshold when they saw Lady Wu returning from the fields. Their family’s land was behind Huaxi Village, at the foot of Jingshan Mountain.
Lady Wu carried a large basket on her back, stray strands of hair dampened with sweat stuck to her face, her clothes covered in yellow soil. Qian Yijin put down his sister, charged forward with his little legs, and hugged her waist, saying, “Grandma is back, come inside quickly, I’ll serve you a meal.”
Unoriginal!
Qian Yixiu muttered to herself as she also ran over to pull at Lady Wu’s clothes, cooingly saying, “Grandma, I’ll pour you some water to drink.” She wasn’t competing with the little boy for affection; she simply wanted to lift Lady Wu’s spirits. Unable to help with the farming work, she hoped to provide some comfort.
Lady Wu, wiping her hands on her clothes, took a hand of each child, “My good babies.” Her grandson had always been endearing, and her granddaughter had become much more cheerful since her injury. Just endure another ten years, and once they grew up, she could enjoy her old age.
The trio entered the courtyard together where Qian Manxia had already prepared the food. Qian Yixiu eagerly poured a bowl of water for Lady Wu, “Grandma, this is the water I boiled with plantain herb this morning, to reduce internal heat.” Her coordination was poor, spilling a few drops from the mostly full bowl.
After drinking a bowl of water that was cool, slightly bitter, and somewhat fragrant, Lady Wu felt much relieved from her overheating body. She said, “Good child.”
As soon as they got home, Dashan hurried out again to forage for food.
The food was served on the table: A porridge made with corn and sweet potato, a small plate of stir-fried leek with wild chicken eggs, a large bowl of stir-fried cabbage with a few bits of crispy pork fat, and a dish of salted vegetables. For them, this was quite a decent lunch.
Lady Wu first scooped some chicken eggs and cabbage into bowls for Qian Sangui and Cheng Yue, with Qian Manxia and Qian Yixiu each serving their respective elder.
With not much chicken egg left, Lady Wu gave most of it to the two children, sharing the remainder with Qian Manxia and herself.
Qian Yijin, still feeling hungry, dropped his chopsticks and said, “Sister, we haven’t visited Great-grandma at Qian’s Main Courtyard for a long time. I miss her.” Having settled his scores for the time being, he was eager to scrounge food and drink again.
Qian Yixiu was reluctant to go; Old woman Qian played favorites strongly. In the past, the young original host rarely accompanied her brother to Qian’s Main Courtyard, where the old lady found her bothersome, sending her to play with Qian Yiduo instead, then secretly calling Qian Yijin into her room for treats.
The so-called treats were just some maltose, snacks, or eggs—things Old woman Qian bought with her own money to eat or occasionally received from Qian Xiang. The old child, other than sneaking some for herself to eat in her room, would keep most for Qian Yijin.
Qian Yijin would always sneak some treats out for Qian Yixiu, but the tiny morsels were not even enough to fill a gap between teeth. And with more frequent deceit, Qian Dagui’s precious grandchildren, Qian Yishan and Qian Yiduo, caught on. Whenever Old woman Qian took Qian Yijin to her room, they created a fuss, much to the displeasure of Lady Wang and Lady Xu.
Especially Lady Wang, who thought Qian Yixiu wouldn’t understand, even badmouthed her in front of her, “This old thing, living off our household, drinking our water, expecting to be looked after by us, yet she’s partial towards the third branch.” She then scolded her own grandchildren, “You should learn from them, see how others captivate with their sweet-talking…”
Without raising her head, Qian Yixiu said, “You go by yourself, I want to stay home and accompany Grandpa and Mother.”
Qian Yijin came to Qian Sangui’s door and said, “Father, you rest well at home, I’m going to the main courtyard to see Great-grandma. Her legs aren’t very nimble; I’ll go and help her massage them.”
Qian Sangui hummed twice from inside the house, “Good, good child.”
Because he was ill, Lady Wu generally didn’t allow the two children into their room.
Qian Yijin then ran to the left wing and repeated the same words to Cheng Yue. She even added one more sentence, “Mother, don’t worry, I’ve already asked my sister to bolt the door tightly.” Then she dashed out of the courtyard with a pitter-patter of footsteps.
After eating her meal, Qian Yixiu returned to her room to help Cheng Yue take off her cloak and get into bed for a nap. She climbed over Cheng Yue to lie down inside, watching her little stepmother fall sound asleep, yet she couldn’t sleep herself.
Her little stepmother’s complexion was pale, almost translucent, and her eyelashes appeared even longer and denser with her eyes closed, like a pair of black butterflies with folded wings, and from her delicate nose came faint snores.
Now that her little stepmother had become a widow, there were men besides Fan Erhei who wished to take advantage of her. When Qian Yixiu had still been a ghost, she had overheard several bad men talking behind their backs about how delicate and lovely the Qian family’s foolish widow was, saying that they would die content even for just a touch, let alone sleeping with her. That’s why Fan Erhei was so brazen, daring to deceive and use force in broad daylight.
If they had money, they could build a big house, hire several protectors, and hide their beautiful little stepmother away deep inside, beyond the view of commoners, and she would be much safer.
However, her current little body wasn’t up to going up the mountain to dig for the already scouted treasures; it was too weak.
At this moment, she somewhat missed the long, leisurely days when she had been a ghost. Every night, regardless of the starry sky or the dark and windy night, she would drift among the mountains, into thousands of households. If she wished to be quick, she could travel a hundred miles in the night without a hint of tiredness. If she wanted to be thorough, she could stick close to the ground, undaunted by wolves, insects, tigers, or leopards, conducting a carpet-style search.
Just as Ma Mian had said, the mountains hid countless treasures.
She didn’t dare think about the treasures hidden in the deep forests of the mountains; she knew that once she transformed into a human, she shouldn’t even think of going there. No matter how good the treasure was, it wasn’t something she could covet.
Her goals were mainly fixed on places she could reach, or possibly reach without too much danger.
Through nearly seven years of scouting, she had almost completely mapped out the mountain. She had also identified at least six locations buried with valuable goods that could be sold for money. However, the value of the goods increased with the level of difficulty.
The first three places were all on Jingshan Mountain, and the goods there weren’t considered highly valuable. As long as her physique got a bit better, and she took the little hard worker Qian Yijin with her, they could get them. If they managed to get all those items, selling them for hundreds of taels of silver wouldn’t be a problem.
Among them, the closest and easiest destination was Hot Wind Valley.
