Chapter 72: Chapter 72: I’m pointing the way!

Inhaling sharply, Ulric stared at the sight before him.

Up ahead, Lyra kneeled, cradling Amber’s head in her lap as hushed whispers parted from her lips.

When she sensed his presence, her head slowly turned, revealing a tear-streaked face as her eyes burned with guilt.

Laying Amber down gently, she stepped back. Her mouth opening and closing repeatedly, trying to find the right words.

"I... this... it’s..."

Before she could, Ulric walked forward, placing a hand over her lips as he muttered softly, "This is not your fault."

At the side, the Sisters of Death stared wide-eyed, sensing the huge amount of power brimming within the dark-robed figure.

Far more monstrous than what they had sensed within the mass of darkness when he made his return into the Greyson Residence.

Had he grown stronger again in that short span of time? But it had barely been a few hours! Or had he not fully displayed his full power back then?

Whatever the case, it didn’t matter as their heads lowered in shame. They had failed him, they thought, as he walked past them.

Ignoring everything else, Ulric approached Amber’s figure, crouching beside her before his gaze fell.

Her condition was far more dire than he had anticipated. Her face was deathly pale, a massive block of ice sticking through her torso as a large amount of blood pooled beneath her.

He doubted she could last long. Another minute later, and she would have already been gone.

The thought caused his jaws to clamp tightly as he raised his hands to cup her face, while stroking her hair. Just as smooth, warm, and fuzzy as the first time.

Feeling his touch, Amber’s eyes fluttered weakly before finally opening as a faint smile spread across her face.

"Y-you came."

Ulric nodded slightly as his jaws clamped tighter than ever. Seeing her in this state pained him.

For a moment, their eyes locked as her large brown eyes stared into his burning crimson eyes.

No words were said, but a thousand emotions were conveyed. A warm feeling spread across Amber’s chest as she sank into her memories.

Ever since she was young, taken in as a servant by the Greyson clan, Ulric was the only person who had ever treated her like a person. Even when she awakened an F-rank talent and the world further distanced itself from her, he had remained by her side, with the last few weeks being the best time in her life.

But sadly, everything had an end, and she had hit hers. Maybe if there was an afterlife, she hoped she could find him again and maybe be his wife in another lifetime.

As all these emotions converged, her breath grew heavy, chest rising weakly before she forced the words out, "P-please... kiss me one last time."

Hearing her words, Ulric’s head lowered slightly, a conflicted look covering his face.

"I’m not ready to lose you." He didn’t think he ever would be.

"There’s no other way," Amber muttered gently, trying to comfort him.

Her condition was far beyond help. Maybe if there was a high-rank healer, the events would be slightly better, but they were extremely rare.

Losing her would break him for a while. But she muttered, her head turning to the side,

"Lyra will accompany you in the rest of your journey to..."

Before the words could fully part from her lips, his fingers fell on her lips, sealing them for a moment as her words echoed repeatedly at the back of his head.

There’s no other way. Even in the face of his growing power, were there some things he was destined to never change?

What was even the point of growing stronger if he couldn’t control his fate and those of the people around him? Was power even worth it if he couldn’t use it to protect and be with those he truly cared for? Was he still the little helpless boy from before?

As all these thoughts clawed at him, his face tightened before he growled,

"No!"

Causing Amber’s brows to arch slightly.

"I’m pointing the way."

He was no longer his weak older self. He refused to stand at the side and watch the people he cared for die.

And as if to prove it to himself, he pulled up the corruption system. Ever since he had broken through, everything had advanced alongside him. Including the system, unlocking a new feature.

Before, he could only corrupt objects, but now he could do far more than that. Living beings could now embrace his darkness.

The notification hovering above Amber’s head confirmed that thought.

[Awakened F-rank human: Amber]

(0 / 10,000 corruption points)

[Unallocated corruption points: 11,240]

Maybe with this, he could make a difference. He didn’t know if it would work, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Leaning closer, he asked,

"Do you trust me?"

Watching her head nod instantly as she breathed out softly,

"Un."

Ulric’s smile widened.

"Good."

As her eyes grew drowsy, he planted his lips over hers, stealing her fading breath as their beings seemed to meld into one.

Feeling her warm breaths against his, he issued the command, allocating the last of his ten thousand corruption points into her.

As his lips drew from hers, darkness oozed out of his being, wrapping around Amber’s frame before it soon covered her whole body.

Watching darkness seep out of Ulric’s body before sealing Amber’s body in a cocoon,

Lyra’s eyes widened, the tears drying on her face as she walked forward to stand beside him.

"What is happening to her?"

"Transforming."

"I-into what?"

A moment of silence passed before Ulric breathed,

"I... I don’t know."

He didn’t know. There was no precedent for this. Amber was the first being he had ever corrupted.

The only thing he was certain of was as the cocoon wrapped around her, the last flicker of life force within her stilled, before slowly growing.

The corruption seemed to have halted her death, just as he had hoped.

A faint smile spread across his face before fading almost instantly after. He had thought he was strong, but he was still weak. He couldn’t prevent harm from reaching those he cared about. He wouldn’t let this happen again.

As he vowed silently, his fists clenched tightly, feeling Amber’s presence within as he muttered beneath his breath,

"You fall weak, but shall rise a new being."

A few seconds passed in this state as he was locked in a trance, before he heard the sound of shuffling footsteps in the distance.

He didn’t need to turn as he recognized the figure instantly. Still, he turned, sensing the look in her eyes.

Watching the young lord turn to face her, Mistress Aria’s breath grew heavy.

She didn’t know why, but she felt as if he already knew what she was about to say. Still, she voiced it out as her fingers fidgeted nervously under the full weight of his gaze.

"Your lord father asks for your presence. His life force is fading fast. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t..."

As the last words stuck in her throat, Ulric nodded slightly.

"You did everything you could." He never once expected her to save him.

Tilting his head slightly, his gaze fell on the Sisters of Death before muttering,

"Take her to my quarters and stand guard over her while I’m gone."

Reverting his gaze, he stared at the cocoon one last time before nodding at Lyra.

Catching the implication, she hurriedly followed behind him. Soon, their figures trailed into the distance.

Just as Mistress Aria was about to follow behind, from the corner of her eyes, she caught sight of the two figures the young lord had just instructed. Before her eyes suddenly widened wildly.

"T-this..."

Her breath hitched as her figure froze. Those stealth suits... the emblems engraved on them... and the aura radiated from them... it was the Sisters of Death!

If it was before, she would have long yelled out before summoning the elders. The two were easily among the most feared assassins in Tempest City.

Yet they seemed to work for Ulric as they followed his orders. What was happening? She didn’t understand.

As her gaze fell to the cocoon, the confusion in her eyes only grew. It was only after a few minutes that her breath stilled as she regained her composure.

The young lord’s means were truly beyond her. Even with all they had uncovered, there was still a lot they didn’t know about him.

Looking at his retreating figure in the distance, she couldn’t help but sigh under her breath.

There really was no end to his secrets.
