Transmigrated to a Dark Fantasy World of SSS-Rank: King of the Void-Chapter 72: The Land of Ash [11]
At the sight of them, the specter came to an abrupt halt, looking confused for a moment. Its ghostly eyes locked onto Mitsuki, who frowned as a sudden wave of fear struck him. He stood up, taking a defensive stance as he summoned Igor. Meanwhile, Monar remained seated, because alongside the specter, he saw other things.
On the rooftops of the nearby houses stood Azel and Marco. They looked just as concerned as Mitsuki, who had already begun to tremble as he aimed the shotgun at the specter.
Monar raised an eyebrow, as if questioning them with his gaze. Azel laughed, shaking his head. Marco responded by looking at Mitsuki.
’What the hell is that thing doing here? Weren’t Marco and Azel dealing with it? Why is it still alive?’ He turned to Monar, thinking the elf would do something to help, but he was so calmly staring at the buildings that the situation felt like a joke. ’What the hell is wrong with you?! That thing is dangerous! Are you just accepting death that easily?!’
Desperate, he loaded the weapon with a fireball. The device roared as it glowed with arcane flames, alerting the specter.
’Fine, if this is how things are going to be, I won’t mind taking this kill too.’ He pulled the trigger and the weapon fired. ’Game Over for you.’
The fireball tore through the air and struck the creature, forcing it to slide back a few centimeters as its feet scraped against the ground. Its dark garments showed burns and flickering sparks of blue flames, which slowly began to consume its ethereal composition. It didn’t react to the shot, but it had definitely taken damage.
"No matter how strong you are, if Arcane Magic hits you, the damage you take won’t be a joke," Monar said, playing with his magic staff, swinging it from side to side. "Marco did a great job weakening it, so Mitsuki, don’t miss the chance and finish it. It’s yours now."
This really confused him, but it was extremely convenient.
’So that means nothing really bad happened to those two while I was fighting the statues.’ As if a divine hunch illuminated his mind, he looked up at the rooftops.
Azel waved at him with a pleasant smile. Marco saw him too, but didn’t care as he began cleaning his sword.
’You’ve got to be kidding me... Can’t anyone take anything seriously?!’ His hands trembled. ’Even if it’s weakened, it’s still way stronger than me. What if it suddenly lunges at me at full speed?!’
It was as easy to imagine as an egg on a highway full of cars moving at top speed. At some point, the egg would be crushed to pieces. That’s what Mitsuki believed would happen.
"You can do it, cupcake! You’re stronger!" Azel shouted to encourage him—achieving the exact opposite.
’Stronger? Yeah, right! You guys are trying to get rid of me!’ This wasn’t the time for a breakdown. The enemy had straightened up, clutching itself tightly. ’What am I supposed to do? And why is it still hugging itself like that?! Is it mocking m—?!’
It took him a moment to realize. The specter wasn’t putting up a fight—its body was fading into shadowy ash particles, its eyes were dimming, and its movements were sluggish and worn. Moreover, in the darkness of the night, it was clear that the creature’s body had been cut in half.
"Oh..." It took him a moment to process it. He looked at Marco, who remained indifferent. ’So this was already over a while ago.’
They were practically telling him, "Take out the trash," which was pretty convenient for him. Needing XP to level up with the stat boost, it was a complete gift.
’After so much nonsense, something good finally happens to me.’
He aimed and fired once more. The flames of the fireball splashed like water over the specter’s body, forcing it back again. Dropping to its knees, it let out an agonizing, broken, exhausted moan—a ghostly sound that, instead of being frightening, felt far too... heavy. That decaying body, chained to a bygone era, trembled as it was consumed by the faint blue glow that ignited the ash of its composition.
But once again, the specter rose. Holding its bisected body together with one hand, it stood up and took a step forward. Ash fell from its body like lifeless sand, making Mitsuki frown.
’It won’t give up. Even after I’ve shot it twice...’ He loaded more magic into the shotgun, aimed, and fired.
Staggering back again, the specter rose. It lifted its hand, trying to reach Mitsuki, and whispered:
"You’re here..."
That drew everyone’s attention, their expressions immediately turning serious. At the same time, the specter swayed, yet managed to step forward once more. It raised its weak hand, trying to reach Mitsuki.
"You’re here..."
Mitsuki’s hand trembled.
’Is it talking to me? Does it know me?’
The memory of Prince Arthur returned to his mind. The dream he had earlier had to be connected to what was happening now. In this city, the specter was surely one of the people who had lived here before the curse.
Monar frowned when he saw Mitsuki freeze. He readied his staff to cast magic if needed.
"Please... Have mercy..." the specter said.
Mitsuki swallowed hard. He felt sweat run down his forehead and a strange sadness overtook him.
’What is this?’
"Have mercy on us..."
It took another step forward, and its hand crumbled, falling to the ground like a mass of dust. Its ghostly eyes flickered, slowly going dark, and its cloak disintegrated, revealing that its exposed ribs were pierced by the daggers it used to fight.
That broken, weary, sorrowful voice—bound by the emotion that forced it to remain in this world—whispered to the person it had waited for so long.
"Please, Prince... Save us..."
It took one more step, and before it could touch Mitsuki, its body finally crumbled. However, its blurred face, corrupted by decay and pain, revealed—just before vanishing—a pair of human eyes that had yet to be consumed by misfortune.
They were silver eyes that seemed out of this world. That single image was enough to freeze Mitsuki in place. For an instant, he saw the memory of a man with long ash-colored hair and silver eyes carrying a small girl in his arms. Beside that man, there was another girl, exactly the same, hugging him affectionately.
Silence fell over the place.
