Chapter 67: Chapter 67: The Land of Ash [6]

The shadow drew closer to the group, bouncing between patches of darkness and creating soft gusts of wind that threatened to snuff out the campfire. The flames trembled, the shadows danced, and the entity leapt high once it reached the middle of the road, landing lightly atop the ruined wooden roof of a small house. From there, beneath the admirable starry night, it silently observed the group—analyzing them.

"What the hell is that thing?!" Mitsuki said, frightened. He moved closer to Monar, turning his back to him without taking his eyes off the creature, covering his blind spot.

The dark elf, focused on the mysterious entity, said:

"Judging by its movements, the atmosphere it creates around itself, and the mana in our bodies resonating with its own, it must be an A-rank Specter—a rather powerful one."

’Specter... Could it be like the Master of Ash? If that’s the case, then we...’ Mitsuki thought, clenching his fist at the idea of summoning his weapon.

"You’ve got to respect those things," Azel added. "Monar, I want my bow."

Following the order, Monar struck his staff. A soft glow appeared in front of Azel, who reached out and grasped the mysterious weapon that formed in his hand—a large bow, about five feet long, black in color with silver details, as if it bore claw marks from a beast. The string was golden and seemed to faintly glow under the touch of his hands.

With absolute skill, Azel drew the bow—despite having no arrow—and narrowed his eyes without taking his gaze off the specter.

Marco mirrored his companion’s hostility, gripping the hilt of his sword with both hands.

"You said it was A-rank, right?" the blond asked.

The elf nodded.

"Its power is around that level. It seems quite intelligent since it hasn’t attacked us yet. It’s probably evaluating our abilities with its enhanced senses. It may also possess abilities beyond my knowledge."

"Then we don’t have time to waste. Azel!"

"Already on it," he replied. Drawing the bowstring with all his strength, the wind swirled violently in his hand. The campfire was extinguished by his mysterious power, and without hesitation, he released the string.

The whistle of an unseen projectile cut through the air, unleashing waves of wind to the sides that threatened to rip buildings from the ground as it tore forward.

Mitsuki had to shield his face from the dust the wind kicked up—he could barely see what was happening. At the same time, just before the wind projectile struck, the specter vanished in the blink of an eye, causing Azel’s attack to shoot past into the sky. Then, its body reappeared in another blink near the road.

"That thing’s seriously fast."

Marco sighed at Azel’s words.

"Not fast enough. Let’s finish this before sunrise—I want to sleep. Monar, I need a boost."

The elf sighed.

"Yeah, yeah. Here’s your boost."

Instead of striking his staff against the ground, Monar raised it high. His eyes glowed amber, along with the blazing aura that enveloped his body. He raised his hand, clenching it into a fist, and without taking his eyes off Marco—with a magic circle forming beneath his feet, composed of sharp figures in an ancient language—he whispered:

"I túrë rimbëa i kelvar úvëa quétëa mi tyëa hráva; i laicëa hlarë i alassëa kelvar úvëa auta mi tyëa sérë. Á carë!"

In the next instant, a powerful surge of electricity struck Marco, who frowned in pain. The veins beneath his skin bulged, and his eyes turned amber. His hair stood on end as if real electricity coursed through his body, and the impression he gave was that of a wild beast that had just gained consciousness.

’Damn... This is...’ Mitsuki was stunned. At some point, he thought he might see Ellegaard do something like this, but for obvious reasons, he couldn’t. Instead, it was Monar who took the initiative to use that famous kind of magic seen in so many RPGs. ’Enhancement Magic.’

With magic coursing through his veins, Marco vanished in a blink. Azel placed a hand on his forehead, whistling as if it were nothing special.

"Would you look at that. That’s how you kick a ghost’s ass."

Marco appeared before the specter, spinning like a storm to slash it with his sword, but the specter leapt back quickly, retreating about three houses away. Of course, the blond didn’t let it go. Planting his foot on an old wooden tile, he gained enough momentum to appear before the specter once again.

This time, he raised his sword in an upward crescent motion. The intent was to split the specter in half from groin to head, but the bastard jumped again to dodge it. Marco’s expression turned more serious, knowing this wouldn’t be difficult.

’With that absurd speed, it’s no surprise he’s an S-rank adventurer.’

Though it was impressive, it was also frustrating. While Marco displayed his incredible swordsmanship chasing the specter; while Monar maintained his support magic on the blond; and while Azel kept his bow trained on the beast at all times, Mitsuki could do nothing but watch, sheltering behind them.

Marco leapt between buildings, becoming a streak of light—a shooting star flying higher and higher. The specter stood no chance against him; the more it dodged, the weaker it seemed before that stellar knight who swung his blade without equal.

And so, Mitsuki’s lifeless eyes reflected that adventurer becoming a legend with each passing second.

’No wonder they can survive in a place like this...’

An overwhelming power.

’No wonder I’m nothing more than the porter to them.’

Absolute skill.

’I’m starting to think I shouldn’t have come here, but I can’t back out now. Even if I’m just a spectator who lands the final blow, I guess I’ll learn from them to improve myself.’

As if it were nothing, he summoned his shotgun and looked at it carefully. When that monster fell, he would be the one to steal the kill. So he looked up at the night sky, where that bright trail seemed to glow ever more brightly.

’But I also have to be the one to step in from time to time.’
