Chapter 56: Uninvited guests.

Mrs. Miller rose, pushing the chair back. "We have pondered enough on this matter. We should go to bed for now and talk again tomorrow."

Sienna sighed in relief. There was a tomorrow!

After they left, she remained alone at the table for a while longer, pondering on the issue. Were her days going to be filled with conflict, nosy relatives or peace? Lady Cadelaria had already moved in, and she was trouble enough.

"What did you decide?" Elias’s voice came from the bottom of the stairs.

She tilted her head and watched him walk towards her slowly. He went to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of wine. When he returned, he pulled a chair across from her and sat down.

"My mother thinks we should endure and play nice first." Sienna replied, her eyes a storm of confusion.

Elias raised the glass to his lips and let it linger there for a moment. "Your mother is soft hearted," he replied softly, "how else did she fall victim to Paris Rocland, twice? But she is not completely wrong so we should consider her words strongly. I am the fox lord, but there are those who wish to remove my family from this position. They are always looking for the smallest dirt on me. Even something like this could be used to discredit me."

She pulled her hands off the table. "And that is why we must meet with the falcon Lord directly and make him undo the expulsion completely. Do you have any way of finding out what the late Paris got mixed in?"

Elias found himself rolling his eyes. "Do I have any way? Do I have any way? Of course I have a way, fox beast men are the best spies on the continent. There is no secret we can fail to sniff out. I have already sent people to start the hunt for answers because I am sure your paternal relatives will not be too eager to share whatever it was." He shook his head, chuckling, "Do I have any way? Oh, you are so funny."

Sienna pushed herself to her feet, "You could have just said yes." she muttered. As she walked up stairs, she could still hear him chuckling, as if she had said the funniest thing in the world.

It was so annoying that she almost considered finding her pan and returning, just to bash him over the head.

Sienna returned from her morning run at precisely 6:55 a.m, sweat still clinging to her brow. Behind her, as a running companion and bodyguard was Elias, not one drop of sweat on him. His body was as dry as when he set off on the three mile run/walk.

She was still planning her day when she noticed something unusual: a crowd of sixteen people--adults and children. They were clustered at the path leading from the beach to her compound. Six guards stood in front of them, armed, arms crossed, faces stern, as though auditioning for a "Grumpy guards of the Year" calendar.

Sienna slowed to a walk, then a full stop. Those brown and black wings scattered in the sand were obviously falcon!

"Well, the family reunion is happening much sooner than we anticipated." Elias whispered to her.

She nodded. "Mm-hmm." They were not supposed to reach her directly, Elias had been strict about that. So, what line of defense had failed?

They looked ragged. The adults carried little more than bundles of cloth tied with little hope. The children, wide-eyed and hungry. They clutched each other’s hands. One teenage boy had a fish tail sticking out of his shirt pocket.

Sienna blinked.

One woman stepped woman, with hair wild like a storm cloud. "Niece, you must be Sienna. I am your first aunt, your father’s older sister. Elder Thad told us that you are expecting us. We are all your father’s kin."

Sienna leaned back, almost stepping on Elias’s feet. "Just like I am sure he told you that I never met my father. Neither did my brother. Apparently, your brother thought parenting was optional."

The oldest woman in the group nodded gravely. "I am sorry child, Paris was not the most responsible of my children. His actions have led us here. He did wrong by you. I am ashamed because now, we have come seeking your help when we were not there for you and Soren."

Sienna realized that this was her grandmother. She was of medium build, with a round face and brown eyes. Her hair was all white, and very thick. In the chaotic state, it almost seemed like an overgrown spider’s web or cocoon. She was not exuding authority and arrogance, just arrogance and embarrassment.

"Would you care to share with us what Paris did to get you all expelled?" Elias asked.

Sienna raised a curious eyebrow. "It has got to be bad. Did he steal a sacred bird seed? Embezzle some wing tax or sleep with the wrong bird?"

Elias pulled on her ponytail.

She whirled around, glaring at him while wincing. "I thought I would open with a joke," she hissed.

"Learn how to choose your moments." He whispered.

The elderly woman’s lips twitched in a sad smile. "Under normal circumstances, we would have laughed. But, times are complicated. Laughter is not something we can afford. As for Paris’s crime.....it is complicated."

Behind her, a little girl piped up in a soft voice, "Can we please have something to eat? We haven’t eaten in two days. My sister is really, really hungry."

Someone’s stomach growled loudly enough to make everyone flinch.

"How did you get here?" Elias asked them.

A man replied, "By way of the sea. We were afraid that we would run into obstructions in the sky so we used a ship."

Sienna sighed. "Well, that explains the fish tail in his pocket."

The elderly woman nodded again. "We were smuggled in with the crated of sea bass and shrimp. We were afraid that your husband would deny us entry into the city."

Sienna rubbed her temples. Now what? Put them on a ship and send them away or feed them and follow her mother’s plan?

Before she could decide which direction to move things, dozens of armed beast men with weapons poured into the area. Some fell from the sky, others came from the sea. Others were driven in by vehicles that almost seemed to be on a mission of running them over.

"What is happening?" A wide eyed Sienna looked at the uninvited guests with suspicion. "What did Paris do? What kind of trouble have you brought to my home?"

A lion’s roar filled the air, just as the sun started to rise.

"Oh no!" Elias groaned.
