Chapter 605: Chapter 607: A Joyous Occasion (Part 2)

She truly wished Xiao Yanzheng happiness and hoped that Master Pang would treat Xiao Yanzheng well.

Xiao Yanzheng and Tong Xiyan had similar personalities, but Xiao Yanzheng was a bit colder and spoke less, even harder to get along with. She then thought of First Master Pang, uncertain whether they would go back to Guangxi or stay in the Capital after marriage...

While lost in these thoughts, Xiao Yanzheng and Master Pang had already kneeled and stood up. Xiqiu could see the Grand Dowager’s eyes turning red as Old Madam Lou and Old Madam Shen each said a word of blessing. Madam Tang also smiled and personally supported the two.

Madam Qian followed behind, and Xiao Yanyi carried Xiao Yanzheng out the door amidst the sound of firecrackers...

The room suddenly quieted down, and the Grand Dowager dabbed at the corners of her eyes with a handkerchief, her eyes red with tears.

Old Madam Shen advised her, "This is a joyful occasion, don’t be sad." The Grand Dowager nodded, but tears still fell. Xiqiu took the tea that Nanny Wu replaced and handed it over, and the Grand Dowager took a sip before sighing, "I’ve always worried about her marriage, and now that she’s truly married off, I’m worried again."

"Isn’t that the truth? Raising daughters is like this—when they’re young, we fret over finding them a good marriage and wish we could settle it right away. But when they’re truly married, we can’t bear to let them go, wishing to keep them by our side forever," Old Madam Lou also had tears in her eyes.

Everyone comforted the Grand Dowager with words. By the afternoon, Xiqiu sent the guests off one by one. Madam Han and Madam Lu came in the same carriage and naturally left together. Madam Han was still dark and thin, in contrast to Madam Qian. Madam Han laughed, "You’ve worked hard, Fourth Madam, handling so many people by yourself." Madam Lu agreed, "When we arrived, we thought we’d stay to help, but seeing so many people and knowing only a few, we hesitated, not wanting to cause you more trouble." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Han Cheng, Qian Wenzhong, and Fourth Master Xiao were all given titles together, and although these two ladies were usually quite close, Xiqiu’s status was not simple, which added some caution in their interactions.

"I wouldn’t dare let you help, besides, nothing much needs doing; everything is already arranged. I’m just here to chat with you," she laughed behind her hand, "Besides, it’s the housekeeper maidservants who are working, I’m just bearing the title."

Madam Han and Madam Qian listened, their eyes flickered, then looked at Xiqiu’s smiling face. They laughed, and the distance between them seemed to close. Madam Han joked, "Isn’t it the truth? When my grand-niece got married, I was so overwhelmed. Thank goodness there were experienced housekeeper maids. Who knows how it might have turned otherwise."

Madam Qian also nodded with a smile, Xiqiu chimed in, "We are young and have experienced little, it’s natural to feel a bit overwhelmed."

Madam Han nodded repeatedly, "Fourth Madam’s reasoning is spot on."

The three stood at the door, chatting for quite a while.

Then Madam Zhou appeared with First Young Madam Ren and Tong Xiyang. Madam Zhou nodded to Xiqiu, "Don’t bother seeing us off, go get busy." Then she glanced at Tong Xiyang, who paused and said to Xiqiu, "We sisters haven’t talked yet today, Mother, you and Eldest Sister-in-law go ahead, I’ll come later."

Madam Zhou nodded and left with First Young Madam Ren.

Tong Xiyang smiled at Xiqiu and said, "...I heard Fourth Sister got a divorce?"

"Did Third Sister get the news from the Jiang Family or from Eldest Sister-in-law?" Xiqiu smiled, greeting Madam Huang and the two Miss Huangs as they left, looking at Tong Xiyang with a beaming smile.

Tong Xiyang raised an eyebrow, "Everyone in the Capital knows, there’s no need to find out. Now our Tong Family daughters are quite famous." She paused, then glanced at Xiqiu, laughing, "What does Sixth Sister mean?"

Xiqiu glanced coolly at Tong Xiyang and responded, "You know what I mean. No matter how we’re seen by outsiders, we’re sisters, both daughters of the Tong Family. Just like now, Third Sister isn’t quite free from implication, so why bother." She paused, "The Jiang Family people don’t have depth, Third Sister should keep her distance."

Tong Xiyang’s lips curled into a smile, "Thank you, Sixth Sister, for the advice. Dealing with them seems easier than with you all. At least they don’t play tricks... Even shallowness has its benefits!"

"Congratulations, then, to Third Sister for finding a kindred spirit," Xiqiu replied with a smile, seeing First Young Madam Tang and Madam Tang coming out, she said to Tong Xiyang, "But don’t forget, no matter how rich you become, the Tong Family is still your mother’s family." With that, she turned away to see Madam Tang off.

Tong Xiyang stood there, her expression changing several times.

"I can tell you have a good temperament, truly a lovable child," Madam Tang grasped Xiqiu’s hand, patting it with a sigh, Xiqiu smiled and replied, "Elder Sister-in-law has a good temperament too, I often envy her."

Madam Tang sighed with a smile, "Ah, her temperament is just too aloof." She glanced at Xiqiu, "But she is kind and straightforward. If she’s ever too harsh, I’d appreciate your understanding."

The humility in those words was palpable, regardless of birth or seniority, Xiqiu wasn’t on par with First Madam. After Madam Tang’s words, Xiqiu immediately showed an anxious face, "Madam, you overpraise me; I haven’t had the chance to express my respect to my sister-in-law, let alone need for understanding. If anything, it’s more her guiding me." She paused, "I haven’t been here long, and she’s taught me much. Madam says she’s aloof, but I know she’s warm inside..."

A smile grew in Madam Tang’s eyes as she spoke and then slid a jade bracelet from her hand onto Xiqiu’s wrist, "It’s my first time meeting you, I didn’t bring you a gift, let this be something for you to wear."

"I can’t accept this." Xiqiu tried to return it, "You’re a senior, I should be offering my respects, how can I take something from you."

Madam Tang chuckled, shaking her head, and First Young Madam Tang’s eyes glimmered as she said, "Fourth Madam, just accept it, there’s no need to be formal." She joked, "My mother always has the best things."

That lightened the awkwardness, and Xiqiu reluctantly said, "Thank you for the gift, Madam."

Madam Tang gave Xiqiu a long look before leaving with First Young Madam Tang, Xiqiu watching her back with a sigh, surely worried about First Madam’s life. Although knowing there would be no trouble for her, she couldn’t help but worry about her well-being.

Turning back, Tong Xiyang still stood under the eaves watching her, her gaze deep with meaning. She then curled her lips into a smile, and left the courtyard with the maids.

When Xiqiu entered, only Old Madam Shen and the Grand Dowager were talking inside. Seeing Xiqiu join them, they exchanged a few more words before Old Madam Shen stood up to leave, "I’ll go back now, you should get some rest. It’s been a busy day."
