Chapter 67: Chapter 67: There’s a Kind of Cold Called "Mom Thinks You’re Cold

Patrick Thorne carried a basket on his arm and a fertilizer sack on his back. The basket held two slabs of pork, over a dozen rice cakes, and more than ten coils of dried rice noodles. The fertilizer sack, meanwhile, contained half a bag of sweet potatoes.

The pork was from Phoebe Huxley, while the rice cakes, rice noodles, and sweet potatoes were from Raina. Tang Xiaonan had an aunt, Phoebe Thorne, who was married and lived in Wraven. Her husband worked for the Administration for Industry and Commerce, a government job, so their family owned no farmland. Because of this, Raina often sent grain and food to help her daughter out.

At that time, city dwellers weren’t as well-off as people in the mountains. The mountains were remote, beyond the reach of the authorities. No matter how chaotic the outside world became, it hardly affected life there. As long as one was willing to work hard, there were always sweet potatoes and pumpkins to fill one’s belly.

(The rice noodles mentioned, called *tenggeng*, are dried vermicelli made from japonica rice. They are formed into round coils and, when ready to be eaten, are soaked in water before being boiled or stir-fried. They are quite delicious.)

Adrian Hawthorne walked silently beside them, not saying a word. Tang Xiaonan glanced at him just as he happened to look over at her. She called out sweetly, "Mr. Hawthorne."

Today, Adrian Hawthorne was dressed in a clean, tidy tunic suit, free of any patches. Despite his young age, he carried himself with an impressive air, offering a faint glimpse of the future powerhouse he would become.

A ray of morning sun landed right on Tang Xiaonan, bathing her face in golden light. You could clearly see the fine, downy hair on the little girl’s cheeks and her long, curled eyelashes. They fluttered like tiny fans with every blink, a sight that seemed to fan at Adrian Hawthorne’s heart, causing it to soften. The corner of his mouth twitched upward involuntarily.

Though it was just for an instant, it didn’t escape Tang Xiaonan’s eyes. Her heart instantly bloomed with joy.

’The boss smiled at me! Haha... He must think I’m irresistibly cute!’

Tang Xiaonan was extremely pleased with herself. ’Someone as cute as me can win over anyone, from eighty-year-old men down to three-year-old toddlers. There’s no one I can’t handle.’

A hint of amusement flickered in Adrian Hawthorne’s eyes. ’Little Fatty Tang’s eyes were sparkling just now, her joy completely unconcealed. Was it all because of my tiny reaction?’

’This chubby girl is far too easy to satisfy, isn’t she?’

Patrick Thorne gave him a long, hard look. ’My sister has been way too nice to this Hawthorne guy lately. It’s not normal. I’ve thought about it for ages and can only come up with one explanation—’

’My sister has a crush.’

’This Hawthorne kid is pretty good-looking, so it’s no wonder my sister likes him. And since she likes him, I’ll have to try and like him too. At the very least, I can’t beat him up anymore.’

Patrick Thorne, trying to act all profound, completely forgot the fact that his sister was only six years old. He was already dead set on viewing Adrian Hawthorne as his future brother-in-law—and in doing so, had accidentally hit the nail on the head.

Tang Xiaonan yawned. The gentle rocking of the walk was making her sleepy again. The sun was now high in the sky, casting brilliant golden rays over the mountains. A pleasant warmth spread through her, but Goldie Thorne and the others were already so hot they had taken off their outer layers. Tang Xiaonan was feeling the heat, too.

Out of doting concern for her daughter, Phoebe Huxley had worried she might catch a chill, so she had bundled her up like a rice dumpling with layer after layer of clothing. She felt like she was dying of heat.

"Hot... Second Brother... I’m burning up..."

The sun made Tang Xiaonan’s head feel a little dizzy, and her forehead was beaded with sweat. Still, Patrick Thorne didn’t dare remove any of her layers. Phoebe Huxley had given him specific instructions not to let his sister get cold. Goldie Thorne didn’t dare disobey his sister-in-law, either. The uncle and nephew tried to coax Tang Xiaonan into enduring it a bit longer.

"I’ll die from the heat if I wait any longer... I’m taking them off myself."

Annoyed, Tang Xiaonan began tugging at her clothes. She felt like she was being baked into jerky. She had no idea just how many layers Phoebe Huxley had put on her; she could hardly even bend her elbows.

Seeing her struggling so much, Adrian Hawthorne stepped over to help. The amusement in his eyes deepened. ’Little Fatty Tang is actually pretty cute like this.’

He took off the outer padded jacket, revealing a lined jacket underneath. Under that was a sweater, then another sweater, and another one after that...
