Chapter 29: Chapter 29: The Whole Family Has Great Prestige

The man being stared at felt a chill run down his spine. While Goldie Thorne wasn’t as openly vicious as Felix Thorne, he was known for his underhanded tactics. He wouldn’t fight you to your face, but he’d be plotting behind your back to get even.

He might throw rocks to scare the egg-laying hens, or toss a snake into the pigsty, or even smash your windows in the dead of night...

You’d know it was that scoundrel, but you could never catch him in the act. He was so damn malicious, far more detestable than Felix Thorne.

"Oh, Goldie, you’re home... My eyesight’s getting worse and worse... Heh heh..."

The man said sheepishly, and the others also backed away a little. No one dared to provoke Goldie Thorne.

Raina came out too. She shot a few vicious glares from her sharp, triangular eyes, and everyone held their breath, not daring to make a sound.

Tang Xiaonan hadn’t realized that this grandmother and uncle of hers had a ’reputation’ in the village that was in no way inferior to that of Felix Thorne and Phoebe Huxley. ’The apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree!’

Actually, this was a good thing. ’People take advantage of the kind, especially in the countryside. Being too nice just gets you bullied. Although she wanted to change her family, she had no intention of turning them into meek little lambs.’

’Hmph, if they were meek as lambs, everyone would be walking all over them and taking a crap on their heads!’

"Am I stewing pig’s feet or soybeans? Why don’t you take a closer look?" Raina said menacingly, staring at the person who had been heckling the loudest.

The courtyard was full of old neighbors who had lived there for at least a decade. They could recognize each other by voice, even by the sound of their footsteps. Of course, Raina knew exactly who had been shouting the loudest.

It was a family that was usually on bad terms with hers. Just a few days ago, the two families had a small squabble over sunning their quilts. The fire in Raina’s heart hadn’t died down yet, and now it was being fanned into a blaze. She rolled up her sleeves, ready for a fight.

The woman being glared at didn’t dare to take Raina on directly. For one, she couldn’t win in a fight. For another, she was a generation younger; whether she won or lost, it wouldn’t end well for her. The woman was exceptionally shrewd and certainly wouldn’t engage in a losing battle.

"Pig’s feet, of course. I was too far away to see clearly just now. Third Grandma, have you eaten yet?" the woman asked, her face instantly breaking into a smile. You couldn’t tell at all that she was seething inside.

Byron Thorne was the third-born son, so many people followed the younger generation’s example and called Raina "Third Grandma."

But Raina wasn’t satisfied. She had been all revved up for a fight, poised to strike, but now she couldn’t throw her punch. Left hanging in awkward suspense, Raina grew even more furious. With her explosive temper, she couldn’t hold it in, and her fist was just about to fly.

"Get back in here and clean up!"

Byron Thorne’s shout came from inside the house. Raina immediately pulled back the fist she was about to swing. After one last vicious glare, she turned to Tang Xiaonan and her three brothers. "Hurry back and eat. And hold those pig’s feet steady."

She deliberately emphasized the words "pig’s feet." Tang Xiaonan was secretly amused. ’This grandma of mine is quite protective of her own. I like that!’

"Goodbye, Grandma! Goodbye, Uncle!"

Tang Xiaonan waved, her words as sweet as honey. As if possessed, Howard and his two brothers waved back. Once they realized what they’d done, they felt incredibly awkward.

’When had they ever been so polite? Usually, they just took off running, ready for a fight if anyone had a problem with it. Besides, being so polite in front of their own grandma and uncle just seemed fake.’

The three brothers glanced at Tang Xiaonan in unison, silently complaining to themselves. ’No idea what’s gotten into the little squirt today. She’s acting so weird.’

Once the four siblings were a good distance away, someone said with a laugh, "Third Grandma, your Howard is becoming so sensible. Look how well he’s taking care of his younger siblings."

The four Thorne siblings today, while not completely transformed, were certainly a breath of fresh air. Everyone was quite surprised and assumed it was because Howard, in a display of brotherly leadership, was setting a good example for his younger siblings.
