Chapter 130: The Harper Citadel Arc [ 12 ]

BOOOOOOM!

Clementine and I blasted through the door as her silver Soul Weapons merged together with lightning, creating a cascade of explosions as they struck everything and everyone in sight.

It was a completely white laboratory at first, surrounded by alchemical flasks, needles, and dozens of potions, pills, and all sorts of random stuff scattered all around.

The Arch Priests and Fivien were also there, huddled around a table with a limbless demon laying on it. The demon had several tubes coming out of its body.

Yet, none of that remained when our attacks hit.

The whole laboratory turned into a blood bath as the limbless demon burst like a balloon, splashing endless amounts of blood onto the Arch Priests.

Two of the Arch Priests managed to survive our attack.

Two priests that we didn’t know.

As for Fivien and one other...

They were laying on the ground with massive holes in their chests, bleeding out and finally succumbing to their injuries.

It all happened in the blink of an eye, and we caught them completely off guard.

As the ringing in my ears finally faded, I heard rhythmic beeps coming from the table where the demon had lain.

But I quickly covered my nose, as the smell of chemicals and burnt flesh mixed together, giving off quite the terrible odor.

Though, despite my near indifference, Clementine didn’t share the same perspective.

After all, instead of all the blood and chemicals, she was looking straight at the human limbs that had fallen out of the cabinets right beside the remaining two Arch Priests.

Her gaze was one of rage.

And so, without hesitation, she stomped the ground and suddenly reappeared in front of the two Arch Priests.

Unlike fighter positions such as Paladins and Templars, Arch Priests were selected based on influence.

And as it so happened, these two weren’t that strong.

Clementine shattered both of their barriers, and before either of the two could react, she crushed the head of one, and then ripped out the other’s spine.

It was a gruesome sight, and the first time I had ever seen Clementine react this way.

But when I saw her swinging around the spine of an Arch Priest, destroying both of their bodies, I didn’t try to stop her.

After all, she wasn’t like me.

I endured 100 years of solitude, and now, barely anything can phase me.

This, aside from being disgusting, just seemed bland to me.

So before the rest of our ’group’ got here, I decided to use my Mystic Eyes on the energies in the ruined laboratory.

There were several hundred of them.

The majority of those energies didn’t lead anywhere, except for one of the rooms in the hallway.

But there were also tens of priests involved, all of whom I was able to find in just a few seconds.

I marked them down in my mind, and after making sure there were no other energies that I could trace, I snapped out of it.

I was met with Clementine, who sat on the table with one leg crossed.

Even though I covered her body with Telekinesis so no blood got onto her, there was a single bloodstain on her cheek.

She probably wiped that blood on herself.

"Amon... Why do people do this?"

I stared at her for a moment.

How could I answer that?

Just a few months ago, I was an ordinary adult in a normal world.

Even I had no idea why all these people were so selfish and greedy.

So I simply walked up to her and brushed her hair, then wiped the bloodstain off her cheek.

"When you find the answer to that question, let me know."

"..."

She calmed down slightly.

"So...? Any sign of what we’re looking for?"

I glanced around for any sign of a pill, but there was nothing.

Except the beeping table caught my interest.

Clementine’s as well.

Noticing my intent, Clementine suddenly turned into her Soul Form and, to my surprise, phased through the table.

I waited for her to go back up, but instead, the table began to screech as she lifted it from the bottom, then toppled it, revealing the area she was in.

Unlike a secret room, this was just a hole in the ground with a red energy crystal embedded in it.

This looked like the ’pill’ we were looking for.

Yet, why was this so familiar to me?

A red energy crystal in the ground...

My eyes widened.

This was no pill at all.

Right before the ending of the game, the final battlefield was riddled with these red energy crystals.

It amplified the powers of demons drastically, since it was made by killing thousands of people.

But that wasn’t the only effect.

Another effect involved one of my theories behind how the descent of demons began.

Every single weak-willed individual in a 50-kilometer radius of the red crystal would have a demonic core forcefully engraved into their heart.

They would turn into demons.

But because of how volatile it was, 90% of the people who went through this process died.

And it’s still a theory because I know for a fact that only 10% wouldn’t be enough to even come remotely close to the amount of demons I saw in the game.

But there was something else.

Something very crucial.

The final part of the ceremony to activate the red energy crystal.

The blood of a demon. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Shit..."

"What? Is the pill—"

Before she could finish her words, I brought my foot down onto the red crystal, shattering it with force.

As I felt the disgusting, miasma-like energy escape the shattered crystal, I knew just what kind of trap this was.

A trap to lure us down here.

And a trap to make sure we would be too late for whatever happened up above.

Noticing my grave look, Clementine remained quiet and followed every move I made.

Since the red crystal was activated for longer than 10 seconds, I knew the damage was already done.

But to what extent?

We needed to go back up.

Asap.

Yet when the two of us ran out of the ruined laboratory, we were met with a crumbled staircase and every single one of the steel doors in the hallway broken and unlocked.

It was silent at first.

But it didn’t take long for tens, hundreds of disfigured demons to step out and glare at us.

And as if on cue, a system message descended.
