Chapter 34: We are VVIPs, In The Slums That is [II]

Situated underground in the slums of Brenst was the place that was responsible for anything related to drugs, prostitution, and gambling—which far surpassed the ones that were allowed in the city.

Working under the nose of Velkyn Cross was something that even the baron couldn’t picture himself doing. Elias knew that Velkyn would only come to know about all of this when everything was already out of control.

He could remember what had taken place in the novel.

Goosebumps.

Just thinking about all of that made his skin crawl. The dead, like living people; the massacre; and the control of the "Velvet Hand" over the whole city.

It was just one of the few unrests ongoing in the south of the Radiant Empire.

But it was hellish enough for one to wish for death.

"Mmph... nnph..."

While Elias sat in his room. Somewhere, in the depths of the confines of the underground place, something else was taking place.

The room was dark, with only the dim light of the chandelier shining on some parts of the room, highlighting the surroundings eerily.

"Mmph... nnph..."

Slice

A knife sliced through the meat. Its edges shone as it cut through the unnervingly red and tender meat in a way that made it look unsettling.

The fibers, fine and delicate, clung to the fork as someone pierced the meat before bringing it near their mouth.

"Mnh," the person groaned ecstatically as he deliberately chewed the meat. "It’s delicious no matter how many times I eat."

"Mmph... nnph..."

"Mnh!"

"Mmph... nnph..."

"Ah," the person muttered, annoyed suddenly. His eyes turned toward a woman huddled in the corner of the room, her hands clutching her arm.

No, clutching what remained of her arm, which was a stump.

"Mmph... nnph..."

Blood flowed in rivulets, coloring the ground and her naked body crimson. Tears burst from the woman’s eyes as marks of blood were present on the sides of her face.

The woman was continuously biting her lips to not let any groans leak. Yet, the pain made her unable to contain the sound.

"It’s a bad habit to interrupt someone’s dinner." The person stood as the dim light from the chandelier shone, highlighting his features.

A man with blonde hair and blue eyes. He looked not very handsome, but not ugly either.

"You have ruined my appetite," the man sighed, wiping his hand. "Julius, would you?"

As the man said, the woman’s eyes widened in horror.

"My—"

Before she could utter any words, a gust of wind blew, slicing her head cleanly.

Thud

The head of the woman fell, splashing and rolling in her own crimson liquid. Her face was still etched with the expression of horror, pointing towards a nightmare, which became her last memory.

However, all of this didn’t matter to the man. Pulling on his coat and correcting the tie, he looked into the mirror.

"Hm, a smudge!"

Wipe

He wiped the mark present on his cheek.

Following that, he smiled before leaving the room as another man wearing a robe followed behind.

"So, what was that you wanted to talk about, Julius?"

The man asked as he walked through the silent hallway.

"My lord, a man had entered the house."

"So? Every day, men enter Julius?"

"My lord, he is new. And when asked about the person who invited him. He named you."

The man stopped. Turning, he looked at the robed figure.

"Me?"

"Yes, my lord."

"I see," the man nodded before once more starting to walk.

"So who is our esteemed guest?"

He asked again as he entered a room.

"The baron of Varen barony, Elias Varen."

"Elias Varen," the man muttered as he walked near a see-through glass.

The huge Colosseum filled his vision as he tapped his fingers against his chin.

"I never invited him," the man muttered to himself. "Is he alone?"

"No, my lord. A woman with red hair and red eyes is with him. After checking, we got to know that she is a commoner and had also attacked Elias in the Cross gambling house."

"Yet she is with him?"

"Yes, my lord. She doesn’t seem to oppose being with him."

Turning, Kade sat on his couch.

’Wasn’t Victor supposed to become the baron? How is the kid here then?’ He wondered as he tapped against the arm of the sofa. ’Am I getting excluded from the operations?’

Kade’s jaw clenched. Was he really getting excluded, or was something else going on? He hadn’t received any message or prior information that things were changing.

’Maybe Elias is here to tell me.’

He wondered as his finger came to a stop. It can be a possibility, considering he knew his name.

’No, it is true.’

There were very few people who knew Kade’s name. So Elias’s knowledge could only mean that he himself was part of the organization and had come to tell him the orders of the organization.

No other assumptions came to Kade’s mind.

’They really do whatever they want,’ Kade sighed. The organization was really unpredictable. ’Why the hell were they even helping Victor then?’

"Prepare the best we can for today," he spoke as he turned to look at Julius. "A VIP person shouldn’t watch something below themselves."

’He would be thinking that I am from the organisation.’

Elias already knew what Kade would be thinking.

The said organization never really kept in touch with people they believed could be compromised. This was the reason that Elias was confident in coming here.

And it was also the reason that made him anxious. For he didn’t want the organization to know that he would be the reason for fucking up their plans in "The City of Wagers."

’I just have to make sure no fuck-ups happen.’

Elias turned towards Evelyn, who was now snacking on something else.

"Stop eating."

"Umh? Whot oo wont?"

"Sigh. You wanted to know where we are, didn’t you?"

"Gulp, I do... Wait, let me drink." She gulped down one glass of wine. "Tell me now."
