Chapter 42: A Leading Decision

Back in the Demon Realm, the top ten hunters were met with a talk from the Demon King’s secretary. This was held inside Kash Mezino’s office, the one Zylus’s group teleported into on their first mission.

"It was sudden, but it was a conclusion befitting someone like him," a tear came strolling down her face, "Medrus M- no, the Demon King, he’s dead. His vitals suddenly stopped on the tracker I attached to him. It’s over." The secretary sadly announced that she couldn’t bear such a tragedy.

All nine of their faces had been left in shock, except for one, and that man was the strongest aside from Medrus Miro. Chris Tall, the one who is most befitting a king.

He smirked, "So what are you trying to tell us?" Chris asked.

"How dare you not show any emotion!" The fifth rank yelled in anger, "You dare treat our king as a mere criminal! I hope death falls upon you, you brat! Share a bit of pride at the very least!"

Kash Mezino stayed watching the two go at it, including the eight other hunters. Kash Mezino’s rank was tenth, the weakest out of the strongest.

"Stop it!" The secretary ragingly yelled, "Our king would never want us to argue in this manner!" She breathed in and out, "okay," her voice became a calm whisper once more.

"Listen, everyone, we now need to choose a new Demon King. Amongst all there is, I want you guys to decide about this matter when you’re ready." She said.

The secretary’s black suit didn’t suit the lustful curves that shaped her at all.

"I think we all know the answer to that one," Chris smiled, "And I’m definitely the best option."

"Ehhhhh!" Angry sounds came from the fifth rank, "Why has this insolent brat been blessed with more powerful abilities than a royal like myself?" He whispered, but it was just enough for Chris to hear.

"What was that?" Chris looked back, his glare darkened, raging Systemic Flow burned around him, "Repeat that, I didn’t hear you right."

The fifth rank looked down, sweat drooled on his face, "I wish you could just die." He barely whispered, almost as though it was a thought, because he was afraid that Chris would hear.

"That’s what I thought," Chris said, looking back to the secretary who was sitting on Kash Mezino’s chair.

A tear fell down Kash’s face. "Why does this always have to be held in my room?"

"Because your room is the best, silly!" It was the ninth-ranked, Ivy Noctis, and now there were only seven more who hadn’t been introduced.

"Enough rambling!" The secretary slammed onto the wooden table. Everybody stopped, "Before choosing who should be a Demon King, I gathered enough information to confirm that..." She paused, and everybody glared at her with curiosity. "The humans have now opened an Elemental Academy, which will cause havoc if given time to come into full fruition. Because of this, we must depict a student to infiltrate them. It can’t be one of you since our faces are most definitely known by now."

She said, everyone looked at her curiously.

"I’ll do it." A man pushed the door open, his gaze darkened, and wraps rolled around his right leg. "I’ll go to the academy."

Everyone stared at him; only Kash, Ivy, and Chris knew who he was, but the rest didn’t.

"I’m sorry, kid, but who even are you?" The secretary wondered, "This is no place for somebody like yourself."

"You can’t feel it?" Chris said, grimacingly, "This boy is more than willing to do anything if it means to ruin their plans. He is, after all, the person that I chose, and the one who would be a deciding factor in this war."

"But who is he? I’ve never heard of him in my life." She asked, and curiosity got the better of her.

"My name?" The man standing before the top ten’s expression wrote calm all over it, "It’s Zylus... Zylus Elwis."

When Zylus woke up once more from Michael’s betrayal, he realized it was never a dream, and he had to continue with what happened for the rest of his life. Frey went almost immediately to cry out for help to someone of higher status, which is when she found Ivy Noctis, the healing mage who healed their injuries once during Zenos and Zylus’s battle.

When she found Zylus, it took a little bit of time, but Ivy was able to heal his injury, which was a deep hole pierced into his right leg. When she finished, Zylus slowly began regaining consciousness, but when Ivy went over to Zenos, it was a different story... for some reason, Ivy’s healing efforts didn’t work for him. In another case, it was from the effects of Michael’s blinding sword, her healing techniques rejected the hole that shaped across the other side through his chest.

Emilia and Frey spoke about what had happened with Ivy, and she later relayed that message to the other top ten, including Medrus’s secretary.

Kash went over almost immediately, but there was nothing he could have done. All he could do was let out tears of agony as they called the mission off. Sending everyone back home, including Emilia, Frey, and the now recovered Zylus. Now, Zenos lay in his hospital bed, his vitals still intact, but his consciousness was gone. They now had to use the human healing methods, just normal hospital technology, which barely did anything.

"It’s fine, leave him be for now," Kash said at the time to each of them, "I know my brother. And something like this would never let him die, now go."

Ever since that moment, they never spoke to one another again, and none of them attended the cadet course for that entire week.

Now, going back to the current situation...

The secretary began checking databases for any information about Zylus, because she couldn’t just believe Chris. After all, he was the strongest.

"Do you even understand this task? I want you to infiltrate their academy, possibly leading to your death if you’re caught." She said, a nerve tingled through from staring at Zylus’s cocky self. "And here it says you lost to Zenos Mezino, so why do you deserve the title over him?" She asked.

"Listen, Clare," Kash’s expression darkened as he called out the secretary’s name, "That was all a lie, the truth is, Zylus defeated my brother, and in that moment, it felt like he had reached low-high class." He said, a nervous breath came tanking down his throat. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

"I understand you want to make this person look good, but I just can’t accept it. He’s a nobody for crisis sake." Clare said, fixing her glasses on her eyes. "What’s this..."

As soon as Clare’s vision became clearer, she sensed it, a raging, burning Systemic Flow that shaped around Zylus.

"No, how does this boy have this much?" Clare frighteningly said, a hand held onto her lenses.

"It has finally been brought to your attention," Chris whispered, "Zylus’s overwhelming rage, circling his body."

Clare couldn’t speak, nor did she have any words to say; something felt twisted inside of her body. And that’s when she realized, Zylus was much more than a little kid whose dreams and aspirations were just like the others; he was the change to what had begun.

"Done." The secretary focused once more, "You shall be chosen as the cadet who shall infiltrate the academy. Firstly, I’ll handle all the declarations so your name is automatically inserted into the school’s system. We have a human spy over there who works with us, but he can’t handle many documents, just enough to get you in." Clare calmly whispered, and a burning sensation ran through her.

After taking a deep breath from the constant chatter, she decided to continue, "The opening day of the ceremony starts tomorrow, so I would rather you prepare and make it on time. You’ll be living in a dorm inside an apartment near the school; they’ll assign it, so there’s not much to worry about." Clare took a quick second to think, "I’ll interconnect my system with yours, so I can chat to you while you’re away, but Zylus, you must be prepared to kill." She said intensely, her eyes let out clear resilience.

Zylus’s eyes darkened, his gaze shifted downwards, "I will. After the incident, I can do so, and I promise you I will. I will not disgrace this realm; this will be the oath that I command." He said, his calm tone seemed serious, but a hesitant sparkle fell upon it.

"Alright, now, it’s time I work things out." Clare finally said, displaying her system in front of him, as Zylus did the same.
