The away locker room was empty, and it smelled strongly of liniment and sweat. Niels followed his players down the concrete hallway to the main tunnel. The noise was so loud it made the floor shake and his chest thump.

The tunnel was narrow and dark, like a brief pause between two teams ready to clash. Niels walked behind Adam Fletcher, noticing the goalkeeper's broad back and calm focus. Dev Patel, just ahead of Thiago, looked serious with his jaw clenched.

The noise, the lights, the cameras, this was the moment Richard Langley had talked about.

Then they ran out into the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The crowd was loud and full of color. The tall stands were filled with violet and white, and flares sent purple smoke into the cool night air. The Curva Fiesole was wild, shouting in a steady, powerful chant that drowned out everything else.

Niels stood on the sideline, fixed his tie, and took a deep breath. This was exactly what he wanted his young players to experience the hard, intense pressure of playing in Europe.

The players took their positions on the field, lining up in formation. Both team captains stepped forward for the coin toss and a quick handshake. The referee flipped the coin, and it landed with a soft thud on the grass.

After a brief exchange, the captains returned to their teams. The game was about to begin.

Kickoff:

The whistle blew, and the game started with fast, chaotic energy. Crawley, using a narrow 4-3-1-2 diamond formation, tried to take control of the midfield right away.

But Fiorentina responded smartly, spreading the play wide and taking advantage of the open space on the wings.

The first ten minutes were intense and fast-paced. Fiorentina's full-backs pushed up the field, creating constant two-on-one situations against Reece Darby and Callum Haines. As usual, Reece struggled with this—after joining the attack, he was often caught out of position, leaving a lot of space behind him.

Niels shouted toward Nate Sutton. "Nate! Shift left! Cover the wing!" he yelled, his voice barely cutting through the noise.

Nate heard the call and quickly adjusted, moving out wide to help Reece.

Just in time, Fiorentina's winger was already driving down the flank with pace. Nate slid in to slow him down, forcing a pass back. It wasn't perfect, but it bought Crawley a few seconds to regroup.

Niels stayed on the edge of the technical area, eyes locked on the movement.

Jamal, Tom, and Nate had a hard time staying in the middle while also helping out wide. Dev Patel was playing too far forward. He was closely marked and couldn't get the ball or slow the game down.

Up front, Thiago and Korey Henry were stuck chasing long balls, with no real chances to attack.

The game was so fast that Crawley's shape started to break down. Liam McCulloch and Harry Thompson were strong in the air, but they struggled as the ball kept flying past them on the sides.

Reece Darby had pushed too far up while trying to press.

Fiorentina responded with a quick counterattack, sending a perfect diagonal pass into the space Reece had left behind.

Their winger took one touch, sprinted toward the box, and fired a low, powerful cross between the two center-backs.

Adam Fletcher, unsighted until the last moment, couldn't adjust his feet fast enough to get down low. The Fiorentina striker darted past Harry Thompson and slotted the ball into the net.

Fiorentina Scores (18')

Gooal! Fiorentina 1-0 Crawley Town.

The stadium erupted. The noise was deafening, and the celebration was loud and intense, going on for several moments.

Niels clenched his fists, trying to stay calm. His players looked stunned, their heads dropping for a moment. But he knew they had to shake it off fast. The game wasn't over yet.

He called out, "Focus! Get back in shape! Play our game!"

Slowly, Crawley started to regroup, determined to fight back.

For the next twenty minutes, Crawley looked unsteady.

The goal made everyone nervous.

Dev Patel, feeling the pressure from Langley's advice, began trying risky passes the flashy flicks over the top instead of easy, safe ones.

"Keep it simple, Dev! Stay calm and hold your position!" Niels shouted, moving up and down the sideline.

Dev took a deep breath and nodded. He slowed down, looking for safer options instead of trying risky moves. Gradually, Crawley started to calm, passing the ball more carefully and holding their shape better.

Niels watched closely, hoping his team could turn the game around before it was too late.

Jamal Osei, the most experienced midfielder, tried to take control. He got the ball from McCulloch, took a touch, and sharply pointed to Nate and Tom, telling them to get back in position. His calm helped slow down the fast pace of the game.

In the 38th minute, Crawley finally created a chance.

Jamal made a sharp diagonal pass to Tom Whitehall, who had moved into space. Tom quickly passed to Dev, who was playing a bit deeper.

Dev took one smooth touch, turned past his defender, and sent a through ball between the full-back and centre-back.

Korey Henry sprinted onto it with great speed.

The angle was tight. Korey hit the ball hard and low, but the Italian keeper stretched out his leg and pushed it wide for a corner. It was Crawley's only real chance so far, a quick glimpse of what the diamond formation could do.

Callum Haines took the corner, but it was easily cleared by Fiorentina.

The ball was cleared quickly by Fiorentina and sent forward on a fast counterattack.

Crawley's defense scrambled back, but the pace was too much. Fiorentina's winger raced down the right side, cutting inside as he approached the box.

Reece Darby tried to catch up, but he was still recovering from his earlier mistake. The winger fired a low shot just inside the near post forcing Adam Fletcher into a sharp save.

The rebound bounced into the box, and a Fiorentina striker pounced, but Nate managed to block the follow-up shot, giving Crawley a lifeline.

After the block, Crawley tried to clear the ball, but Fiorentina kept the pressure. Time ran out, and Crawley couldn't make another good chance.

The referee blew the whistle for halftime.

Halftime:

The referee's whistle was a relief to many players.

The players walked slowly through the loud tunnel, looking tired and frustrated.

The locker room was cold and quiet. Everyone was disappointed. No one talked, they just took off their wet shirts and sat down on the benches.

Niels waited a moment, letting the silence and the score sink in.

He walked to the tactics board, wiped the old drawing, and redrew the 4-3-1-2.

"They won the half on the wings," he said calmly but firmly. "They didn't beat us in the middle. They used the space our diamond leaves open. Reece, Callum, you can't cover both full-back and winger. It's impossible."

He pointed at Dev Patel. "Dev, you're playing too far forward. You're crowding Thiago and Korey.

Mr. Richard wants us to break through the defense, but I need control. Drop back and help Tom and Nate control the game. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

We connect defense and attack. Don't try long passes that might fail, that leaves us open."

Then he looked at Nate Sutton and Tom Whitehall. "Nate, when Reece pushes forward, you cover the right side. Tom, you cover the left. We move together as a team, or we risk another goal."

Finally, he faced the two strikers. "Thiago, Korey, you're alone up front, but you're creating space. Keep running and making moves. But only pass to you when the chance is clear."

The players nodded, absorbing every word. Niels took a deep breath and looked around the room.

Niels looked around and said, "We have to fight for every ball. Stay tight, stay focused, and keep pushing. The game isn't over, let's turn it around."

The players nodded, their faces set with determination.

Niels gave them one last look. "Remember, it's not just about skill, it's about heart. Go out there and show them who we are."

With that, the team stood, ready to take the field again, their energy renewed and their focus sharp.
