Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Difference Between Love and Indifference

Vera Yves’ eyes flashed with a hint of embarrassment, her complexion slowly turning pale.

Winston Valentine looked into her eyes and continued, "At that time, tell him in detail how I’ve been forcing you, in these three years of marriage, every time I forced you, did you ever enjoy it?"

"Winston Valentine!"

"Of course, even if you did enjoy it, as long as you say you weren’t willing, I think Counselor Monroe should be able to understand you."

Vera turned away, her voice hoarse, "He’s just an ordinary friend of mine."

Winston lifted her chin, wiped away the blood from her lips, and sneered, "Even if he’s just a friend, he’d surely be willing to help you."

Lips captured again by his kiss, Vera despairingly closed her eyes.

...

When Vera opened her eyes again, it was already evening.

A servant came out of the bathroom with their clothes. The white silk shirt had been torn by Winston, and could no longer be worn.

The villa was already absent of Winston’s presence.

Lying on the bed, Vera turned over, tears dripped from the corner of her eyes onto the pillow, quickly smudging it.

If he weren’t still injured, he probably wouldn’t have let her go so early.

Even though she knew whatever she said he wouldn’t believe, she still couldn’t help feeling heartache.

And Cecilia Vaughn didn’t even need to say anything, just cried and he would be thrown into disarray.

Perhaps this is the difference between love and indifference.

After cleaning the bathroom, the servant brought medicine and a glass of water to Vera, "Madam, Sir instructed that once you wake, take the medicine."

Vera offered a self-deprecating smile. Even in such circumstances, Winston was afraid she’d become pregnant with his child.

Vera sat up, took the medicine, the red marks on her slender wrist glaringly painful to the eye.

Swallowing the medicine, Vera felt instead devoid of the previous bitterness.

Spending too much time in the bathroom, Vera indeed caught a cold the next morning. After notifying Tristan Valentine, she slept, dreary and exhausted, for a whole day.

The thought of divorce flashed through her mind countless times.

She certainly didn’t think Winston would refuse to divorce her out of fondness; he didn’t love her, even hated her, yet wouldn’t allow her to leave him.

Behind her stood The Yves Family, she couldn’t risk it.

Actually, as long as he didn’t cheat, even if he had someone else in his heart it didn’t matter, it’s been like this for three years — but why did she seem to care more and more?

...

Once she felt somewhat restored, Vera drove to the clinic to pick up something.

Upon seeing the clinic door unlocked, Vera didn’t even bother locking her car before rushing in.

Inside the clinic, over ten people were sorting through things — grandfather’s medical books and numerous resources were callously thrown on the floor, like a heap of waiting garbage.

"Who are you people?" Vera’s voice quivered with anger, "Who allowed you to touch these things inside!"

Someone approached to negotiate with Vera.

"President Yves has sold this house, we’re here for possession."

"What did you say?" Vera staggered back in shock, "You mean President Yves, Harry Yves?"

"Yes."

Vera steadied herself, "Tell your people to stop immediately, The Yves Family is not selling this house!"

"This..."

"I am Vera Yves, President Yves’ daughter."

"Sorry, the transfer procedures are complete, the house no longer belongs to The Yves Family."

The procedures are complete?

It took Vera a good while to find her voice, "Whose is it now?"

The man shook his head, "No comment."

Vera leaned against the door frame to keep from collapsing, she steadied herself, called Harry Yves, "Dad, you sold the clinic?"

Harry Yves helplessly replied, "Vera, your grandfather is gone, you don’t intend to practice medicine, the house idle is just idle, you know we owe The Xavier Family a lot of money, and just happened someone offered a good price, so I sold it!"

Vera’s voice trembled, "Dad, this is The Yves Family’s old residence, grandfather’s lifelong dedication is here, how could you just decide to sell it without even consulting me?"

Located in a prime, priceless bustling area, this clinic comprised a courtyard at the back and a storefront in front, not immensely large.

For many years, numerous people eyed this courtyard, but grandfather never relented.

On one hand, The Yves Family wasn’t short on money, on the other, grandfather said this was the root of The Yves Family, it couldn’t be discarded. After grandfather died, the courtyard went under Harry Yves’ name.

Harry Yves sighed, "Vera, have you forgotten how your grandfather passed? He cultivated virtue and charity all his life, wrote prescriptions without charging, but the result was?"

Vera cooled down, coldly inquired, "How much did they pay?"

Harry Yves hesitated momentarily, then said, "If it’s just the house, seventy million; along with what your grandfather left, one hundred million. Vera, you know we owe a lot to The Xavier Family, if unpaid, The Yves Family will go bankrupt."

Vera’s heart ached, "Dad, we could have thought of other ways to repay, how could you target the old residence, even considering selling grandfather’s belongings along with the house?"

Harry Yves indifferent, "Those things aren’t worth much anyway."

Grandfather’s lifetime of dedication isn’t worth it? Those are obviously priceless treasures.

Vera felt overwhelming discomfort, "Who’s the buyer?"

"Vera, the paperwork is done, the clinic is now theirs."

Vera clenched her phone, "Who’s the buyer?"

Knowing concealment was futile, Harry Yves helplessly said, "Manager Sterling was the one negotiating."

Manager Sterling? Vera’s gaze sharpened, "Melinda Shelby’s assistant?"

"Vera, your mother-in-law offered far above market price, seems she sincerely wants to help our Yves Family, otherwise I wouldn’t have sold so swiftly..."

Vera cut off the call, Melinda Shelby helping The Yves Family? It’s an outrageous joke.

Watching people move grandfather’s medical books out, Vera hurriedly rushed over, "You cannot touch these things here!"

"Miss, please do not disrupt our work!"

Vera spread her arms, blocking the doorway, her tone firm, "I will speak with the buyer; nothing in this house may be touched!"

"The house no longer belongs to your Yves Family, if you continue causing trouble, don’t blame us for being unkind!"

"I said not to touch anything, and that’s final!" Vera stubbornly blocked the entrance, in her mind was the image of grandfather, after each clinic day, arranging resources meticulously under the lamp.

Every stroke was written by grandfather, no one could take them away!

"The items have been sold, whether they can be moved isn’t your place to decide." Someone pushed Vera, she stumbled but wouldn’t leave the doorway.

Someone came to pull her away, Vera coldly stated, "Anyone who touches me, I’ll sue for harassment!"

The clinic faced the street, soon attracting a crowd.

The leading man made a call, then addressed Vera, "The items here have been sold, we’ve inventoried everything, Miss Yves please refrain from interfering, or it’s theft."

After speaking, the man summoned everyone to leave.

Vera breathed a sigh of relief, collapsed to the floor, placing grandfather’s things back to their rightful place.

She knew Melinda Shelby spent one hundred million to buy this clinic, yet she couldn’t buy it back with one hundred million.

Vera locked the clinic anew, then drove to the Hillside Villa.
