Chapter 486: Chapter 180 Making Money
In the afternoon, Luo Mingzhu continued her studies with the music master, while Yueyao, accompanied by Xiang Wei, went up the mountain to sketch from life.
As soon as Yueyao arrived at the front courtyard, she saw Bai Han with surprise—why had Bai Han not left yet? Yueyao was skeptical. Was Mingzhu truly as favored as she had imagined, or else why would the orders she gave be ignored?
Upon seeing Yueyao, Bai Han said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, "Miss Lian, are you on your way back?" He was vaguely aware of yesterday’s incident. The servants of Marquis Jingning’s Residence were tight-lipped, but given Bai Han’s special status, he had also caught wind of some rumors.
Yueyao smiled, shaking her head, "No, I’m just going out for a walk."
Bai Han exclaimed, "Good heavens! How could a young lady like you wander around carelessly? What if you encounter bad people?" Even ordinary women from modest backgrounds wouldn’t roam so carelessly on the mountain. He definitely needed to tell his aunt about this when he got back.
Yueyao, with a light smile, responded, "You needn’t worry about that. Didn’t Mingzhu arrange for someone to escort you home? Why are you still here? Does Mingzhu know about this?" Yueyao couldn’t help feeling speechless about Mingzhu—deceived by her servants to this extent, it was clear how naive she was on regular days.
Bai Han’s face stiffened.
Yueyao, still smiling, left the courtyard. Bi Shaoye was waiting at the gate with two followers and joined her to head up the mountain.
After half a day’s climb, Yueyao stood on a level spot, gazing at the opposite mountain peak, and immediately spread out her painting supplies to start drawing.
Xiang Wei looked on at Yueyao’s setup as if she were a Great Painter.
As the sun was about to set, Yueyao finally completed her drawing. Looking at the mountain peak and then at the painting in her hands, she nodded to herself in satisfaction.
Xiang Wei pointed to the sky and said, "Miss, it’s so beautiful. If only you could capture it in your painting."
Yueyao looked up at the sky.
The deep blue sky was scattered with large clumps of white clouds, which under the glow of the setting sun, turned a fiery shade of red.
Xiang Wei, seeing Yueyao staring into the sky, lost in thought, didn’t dare approach and disturb her, fearing that it might disrupt her train of thought.
Before long, the last traces of light in the sky had blended into the gathering dusk, darkening the heavens, while the outlines of the surrounding mountains turned a dark indigo. As the twilight deepened, the world plunged into a chaotic haze.
Gently, Yueyao recited, "The valleys echo with evening winds, the silent peaks stand under the slanting sun."
Xiang Wei, having heard Yueyao reciting poetry, was glad she hadn’t interrupted her. She could’ve disrupted her inspiration, which would have surely resulted in a real temper. Because of this realization, Xiang Wei would not dare to disturb Yueyao while she was painting in the years to come.
Midway home, Yueyao turned to Xiang Wei and said, "Wait another two days, and I’ll capture this scene." She needed to study it more before she could paint it.
It took Xiang Wei a while to understand what Yueyao meant.
As soon as Yueyao returned to the courtyard, Luo Mingzhu came up to complain, "Where have you been? Why only now are you back after such a long part of the day?"
Yueyao answered with a smile, "I went to sketch from life."
Luo Mingzhu asked curiously, "Sketch from life? What is that?" She had never heard such a term before!
Yueyao explained, "It means to capture the scenery."
Luo Mingzhu did not understand and didn’t want to. However, she was pleased and said, "Today the music master said if I can do as well as I did today every day, I could learn a piece in at most a month. You said it would take me one or two years to be proficient, but let me tell you, in no more than three months, I’ll be able to play a complete piece with leaves. Luo Mingzhu was so proud at the thought of achieving in three months what Yueyao did in two years, which only motivated her more.
Bai Yi didn’t know why the lady would believe Miss Lian’s words. In fact, he also found it strange. There were so many things Yueyao knew. Although not all were mastered thoroughly, Yueyao dabbled in many areas.
Yueyao said with a smile, "Talk to me about it again once you’ve learned." Her words seemed to suggest that Mingzhu would not persevere and would give up halfway.
Luo Mingzhu huffed coldly, "Don’t worry, I will definitely learn it within three months." How dare she underestimate her! She was determined not to let Yueyao look down upon her.
Yueyao knew Mingzhu’s personality, so every few days she lightly stimulated Mingzhu, encouraging her to keep going.
A half month passed, and Mingzhu spent each morning learning music pieces with the music master, practice calligraphy for an hour and a half in the afternoon and evening, and when bored, she read books Yueyao brought.
Bai Yi, knowing Yueyao’s temperament, did not restrict Mingzhu from reading Yueyao’s books, but he didn’t expect Mingzhu, who usually hated books, to find the travelogues quite to her taste. Sometimes, she would even wait for Yueyao to come back so they could discuss the content.
