Time Travel: Pampered by the Aloof Prince-Chapter 376: Those Two People Are Hiding Among You
Chapter 376: Chapter 376: Those Two People Are Hiding Among You
The Ghost Envoy pinched a blood-drenched tongue between her delicate fingers, and declared to the trembling ghosts kneeling below, "If anyone dares to act like this in the future, this will be your fate!"
Qi Yu hadn’t expected that she would witness such a gruesome scene, and her pupils shuddered violently.
Sensing the Ghost Envoy’s gaze drifting towards her, she quickly lowered her head again, feigning an utterly terrified appearance.
The Ghost Envoy frowned slightly, feeling that those eyes seemed a little too lively.
But as her mana was weak, she couldn’t detect any living presence in that direction and had no choice but to let it go.
She threw down the piece of tongue, twisted the bloodstain off her fingertips, and coldly curved her lips before turning back to say to the people inside the palace, "City Lord, I have cut out this person’s tongue."
The City Lord’s ethereal voice conveyed a chill, resonating word by word in the silent palace, "Ghost Envoy, those two are hidden among you, find them."
At these words, the crowd of ghosts erupted into an uproar.
"What? Those two are hiding among us?"
"How is that possible? All the way here, we haven’t noticed anything unusual!"
"Yeah, it’s so strange, have those two people turned into ghosts as well? Otherwise, how could there not even be the sound of breathing or footsteps!"
"..."
The Ghost Envoy listened to these discussions, her eyebrows fiercely knitting together.
She turned around, faced the kneeling ghosts, and swept over them with a piercing gaze, one by one.
Some ghosts could not bear her gaze, sharp as a knife’s edge, and bowed their heads one after another.
The Ghost Envoy shouted, "Raise your heads, all of you! I want to see who dares not look me in the eye!"
Thus, the ghosts shakily lifted their heads, gathering the courage to look at her.
After a cursory glance to confirm everyone was present, the Ghost Envoy slowly approached them, took out an incredibly sharp Soft Sword from within her robes, and lifted each of their faces to meticulously check whether they were human or ghost.
"Ghost... Ghost Envoy, I...I really am a ghost, not a human!" stammered a ghost, so terrified of the sword pointed at him that it took him an age to get that sentence out.
The Ghost Envoy glanced at him coldly and barked, "Shut up!"
The ghost rapidly blinked and fell silent.
With this being set as an example, the following ghosts did not dare to speak, not even making the slightest sound.
It was only after the Ghost Envoy had checked every ghost without finding any trace of humans.
Her eyes turned icy, and her gaze fixed on the fearful expressions of the crowd of ghosts. Across all the faces she surveyed, foreheads emanated strands of dark green mist, their pupils were scattered, and the whites of their eyes shockingly intense.
The Ghost Envoy could only sheathe the sword, ascend the steps, and report to the people in the palace, "City Lord, no one was found among them."
Hearing this, the ghosts collectively breathed a sigh of relief.
A light laugh came from within the palace, followed by the question, "Is that so?"
At once, the ghosts fell silent and lowered their heads.
The hand of the Ghost Envoy clutching the sword tightened continually, the knuckles cracking from the strain, as she respectfully yet uneasily said, "Please enlighten me, City Lord."
In a moment, a red figure floated out from within the palace, with jet-black hair cascading down to the waist, a complexion almost translucent, and eyes devoid of warmth.
The ghosts rarely saw the City Lord, occasionally only glimpsing a red figure flashing through the Imperial City from afar.
Now, caught off guard by the sight of the legendary City Lord’s true face, they were all dumbstruck.
In their imagination, the City Lord was supposed to be a cold, unpredictable woman, and most likely not particularly beautiful.
Otherwise, why would she never show her true face?
Yet, what appeared before them was a peerless beauty with a countenance that could shame the moon and blush the flowers.
All the ghosts gazed foolishly at this suddenly appeared beauty, but the Ghost Envoy bowed her head in fear, not daring to directly face her visage.
After a moment of silence, a braver ghost asked, "City Lord, why did you say those two people mixed in among us just now?"
The City Lord parted her lips slightly, her crimson lips like drops of blood, intimidating to gaze upon, and she spoke languidly, "Because I heard their breathing."
Hearing this, all the ghosts looked at each other in shock, turning to glance at the ghosts beside them.
"Did you hear it?"
"No, I was too nervous to notice any breathing!"
The Ghost Envoy’s face drained of color, her eyes trembling in disbelief before she raised her head and said to the red-clad woman standing before her, "City Lord, could it be those two people at the back?"
The City Lord curved her lips slightly, her eyes looking at her with a semblance of a smile, "You finally guessed right."
To have people sneak under her own watch, into the Imperial City, and to be discovered by the City Lord, the Ghost Envoy was utterly ashamed.
She knelt down straight, her tone filled with embarrassment, "This is my dereliction of duty, please punish me, City Lord."
However, the City Lord slightly lifted her hand, signaling her to rise.
The Ghost Envoy stood up uneasily, awaiting her command.
At this point, the ghosts finally realized that those two people had never disappeared. They had always been right under their eyes, even mingling amongst them to enter the Imperial City.
"Please punish us, City Lord." In a moment, all the ghosts were prostrated, pleading for mercy.
There were rumors that the City Lord had once chopped an insubordinate ghost into mincemeat, piece by piece, and the image of that freshly severed tongue still dangling before them ignited a deep fear in their hearts.
But unexpectedly, the City Lord did not punish them. Instead, she said indifferently, "Stand up. It’s not your fault."
"Thank you, City Lord." The ghosts exhaled as if they had a narrow escape from death, helping each other to their feet.
The Ghost Envoy’s gaze continued to search for traces of those two people, but she couldn’t even feel a hint of their presence and could only lower her head in disappointment to the City Lord, "It is my incompetence, I couldn’t capture those two people."
"Indeed you are incompetent," the City Lord glanced at her coolly, causing the Ghost Envoy to shiver, a flicker of resentment crossing her face.
The Ghost Envoy pursed her lips and asked again, "Where are those two people now? I will capture them myself."
The City Lord raised an eyebrow, "Those two are still here, it’s just that you can’t find them."
The Ghost Envoy looked up in disbelief, "How is that possible?"
Even the City Lord, they thought, could hardly vanish without a trace right in front of them.
They were just two people, without the knowledge of spells, how could they accomplish such a feat?
The group of ghosts was also confused, speculating, "Could it be that they can turn invisible?"
No sooner had the words been spoken than they were met with rebuttals, "They are not immortals, how could they know such a supernatural trick!"
While all the ghosts chattered about their speculations, the Ghost Envoy’s gaze remained fixed on the red-clad woman before her.
Thus, she did not miss the flicker of amusement in the City Lord’s eyes.
