This Life, I Will Be the Protagonist-Chapter 423: Skill 1: Survive Until the End
Rita quickly turned a corner, activated her Hunter’s Eye to confirm that no one was around, then used Invisibility to switch into a new outfit. After that, she used a disguise skill to change her race. Considering that Wind Scythe was involved earlier, Rita decided to transform into an oak owl this time.
Nivalis transformed into a small snake and hung around Rita’s ear, blending in perfectly.
They didn’t leave immediately, continuing to explore the area.
But soon, a group of Wind Scythe soldiers appeared on the main street of Tonton Lin’s capital. Wolf Fortress, holding the arm of a large Wind Scythe, was walking down the street, crying: "Uncle! My hard-earned money has been stolen again!! It must be that thief who always steals in our Wind Scythe capital! It has to be!"
Rita and Nivalis simultaneously looked up at the large Wind Scythe’s name—Wazo.
Rita & Nivalis: "...Great, it’s the Wind Scythe royal family."
Nivalis wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead. "We cannot let our skills be exposed, or we’re as good as dead."
Rita: "Isn’t Dragon Island supposed to protect us?"
Nivalis: "What I mean is, we’ll die once out here, then die again on Dragon Island."
Rita was horrified. "But when I shared skills with you last time, you didn’t say anything like that! You said Dragon Island would protect us!"
Nivalis scratched her head, looking confused. "Huh? Did I say that?"
Rita: "...Who messed with your head, Nivalis?! You were never like this!"
Standing there as an oak owl, Rita appeared calm and collected, her mental fortitude unshaken.
Nivalis, on the other hand, felt nervous. "I’m starting to get worried."
Rita: "We just found a wild wallet. What’s there to be nervous about?"
Nivalis: "…Before, Holy Cup said that a player’s divine talents are tied to their personality, and I didn’t believe it. Now, I do. I’m just not cut out for this skill."
Rita: "Don’t worry, you’ll figure it out. Being immoral and criminal are also kinds of talents."
If Rita hadn’t turned into an oak owl, she might not have been this calm. But she was now, and it was working in her favor.
Before long, the Wind Scythe squad leader approached Rita and asked her a few routine questions. Rita responded fluently in the oak owl language.
She wasn’t overly concerned that Wolf Fortress or Wazo would discover she was the one who had stolen the gold. If they could figure it out, she wouldn’t have been able to steal for months without being caught.
Of course, she was still prepared for the worst. She had already agreed with Nivalis on their escape plan. If things went south, Rita would scatter gold coins to create chaos, allowing Nivalis to teleport back to Dragon Island using her Cathead skill. Then, Nivalis could reverse summon her, which would be faster than if Rita left on her own using the Cathead.
Rita wasn’t trying to swap divine talents with Wazo. Wazo was royal, but not the Wind Scythe king. His divine talent was S-rank, but as far as practicality went, Rita preferred her current setup.
During the questioning, the squad leader kept his eyes fixed on her mouth, confirming that she was speaking oak owl language. After a few more questions, Rita spoke so confidently it seemed like she was the owl queen. The officer quickly gave up and moved on to the next suspect.
After half an hour of questioning, Wolf Fortress and Wazo told everyone to leave after giving their names.
Rita, having spent 300 years in High Tower, was fluent in oak owl language, so she signed her ID with a quick flick of her wrist and was allowed to leave.
Just as she was about to step out, a commotion erupted nearby, and soldiers began to gather. One of the soldiers shouted, "He doesn’t know the Moon Fox language! He’s a fake!"
Curious, Rita examined the divine talent of the Moon Fox involved in the situation. She discovered that the Moon Fox’s talent was A-rank and called Survival Against All Odds.
This skill also had a disguise ability, which seemed decent. But Rita’s attention was quickly drawn to another skill!
Skill 1: Survive Until the End
This skill allows the user to disguise themselves as any object they’ve previously encountered. All player information becomes editable as if it were an item, and cannot be detected by any skill or method below SSS rank. You will appear as a true inanimate object, and your health points will drop to equal your level. While disguised, you cannot use any skills. The duration is indefinite, with no cooldown, but each activation consumes 50% of your mana.
The pros and cons were clear.
The biggest downside was that your health drops to your level, meaning if Rita used this skill, her health would be reduced to just 18 points—probably low enough that a passerby could kick her to death.
However… she had Bedtime Tale! With this skill, she wouldn’t be immediately killed. The most any enemy could do was knock off 30% of her health, no matter how low her health was, so she could survive at least four hits before dying. Discover stories at novelbuddy
As for "unable to use any skills while disguised," once she acquired more Golden Tree Withered Leaf, that limitation could be circumvented!
The only issue was that this skill was located in Skill 1 and was tied to her Sharpshooter talent’s passive You’re Too Weak—which allowed her to detect enemy weaknesses during combat.
The Moon Fox was charging toward her, but in the span of just a few seconds, Rita made her decision. This skill was hers!
You’re Too Weak was fine, but Survive Until the End was more unique and suited her better. If she had to choose, she would go for the latter.
She immediately used I Just Want to Improve So Badly on the surrounding Wind Scythe soldiers, casting it over a dozen times until her health dropped to 10%. After downing a few potions, her health kept dropping.
The Moon Fox, confused by Rita’s rapidly decreasing health, didn’t stop. When he passed by her, Rita moved slightly to block his path. Without hesitation, he shoved her aside with great force.
At this point, Rita’s information was disguised, so in the eyes of this level 48 Moon Fox, she was just a low-level NPC.
However, after the Moon Fox passed, Rita quickly pulled out Ashes, firing several shots at herself, much to the horror and disbelief of the Wind Scythe soldiers watching.
Nivalis’s frost power enveloped Rita’s entire body. As soon as she was injured, the frost would freeze the wound, preventing any blood loss. But since Rita was disguised, it didn’t matter much if she lost health.
Meanwhile, Rita followed the Moon Fox from behind, trying to use Moment of Reversal to swap skills.
She had already been attacked, so all she needed was to be at a disadvantage.
On the streets of Tonton Lin, everyone watched in disbelief.

The Moon Fox was running ahead, with an oak owl flying low behind it, shooting herself with a gun as she chased. Behind her, a group of Wind Scythe soldiers followed.
The Moon Fox turned around, shocked! What was this? Was this some kind of curse? Was the oak owl really this crazy?
Just when it seemed that Rita’s reputation would be ruined, her health dropped to a mere 0.8%!
Moment of Reversal—Successfully activated!
