Chapter 226 -207: The Broken World
Thrashtoads, a type of extraplanar terror that even Amberser found dangerous.
Due to some mad mages, some deranged alchemists, or perhaps some deities who couldn’t help but cause trouble, the stability of this world’s space was extremely unstable.
Many adventurers had experienced stumbling upon a secret realm and encountering portals to other worlds.
Amberser once suspected that this was why he had been transported to this world.
But back to the matter at hand, thrashtoads are not creatures from this plane but originate from a world known as “The Sea of Chaos.”
Legend has it that a deity attempted to use a Divine Artifact to quell the Chaos of the Sea of Chaos and prevented its spread to other worlds, but the result was that the artifact was corrupted by chaotic powers and turned into a gigantic egg.
And thus, the first thrashtoad was born.
These monsters seemed like they were born to rebel, hatching from an artifact meant to stop the spread of chaos, yet they were intent on spreading it to other worlds.
These giant toad-like creatures possessed terrifying parasitic abilities; if one was scratched by their claws, thrashtoad eggs would already be planted inside the unlucky victim’s body. As the eggs hatched into thrashtoad tadpoles, the unfortunate host would be consumed by the tadpoles, birthing a new thrashtoad.
What’s more, these newly hatched thrashtoads could inherit the host’s appearance and some of their abilities.
This parasitism was nearly impossible to resolve, as most known drugs and spells were ineffective against thrashtoad eggs, as horrific as the Heart-stealing Demon’s parasitism. But the parasitic ritual of the Heart-stealing Demon was very troublesome, requiring the host to be controlled without any resistance. Thrashtoads, on the other hand, just needed to leave a wound.
When squatting, these monsters stood nearly two meters tall, their bodies covered with fiery red skin secreting poisonous pus, and they were closely watching Katherine.
For thrashtoads, living humans like Katherine were prey, while a lich like Amberser held no value for use.
As soon as Amberser confirmed that these creatures were thrashtoads, he quickly warned Katherine, “Step back, these things are extremely dangerous, make sure you don’t get hurt by them.”
Right after Amberser finished speaking, those thrashtoads lunged at Katherine.
Katherine raised her hand and loosed an arrow, piercing the bodies of two thrashtoads. The powerful magic on the arrows blew the two thrashtoads apart, but the foul-smelling liquid splattered, and the thick poison gas spread, making Katherine feel short of breath.
“Let me take care of this, these creatures are hard for a living person to deal with.”
Amberser started with a whirlwind, sweeping up the poison gas, then quickly erected an earthen wall to separate Katherine from the thrashtoads.
With their hunt thwarted, the thrashtoads immediately switched their target to Amberser.
Amberser hastily flung several Freezing Rays, leaving swathes of frost on those giant toads. However, the effect was mediocre; even with frost clinging to them, the thrashtoads moved with ease.
Two thrashtoads that lunged were knocked away by Amberser’s Thunderous Wave, but they rolled over and got back up as if nothing had happened.
Amberser then tried the Fireball Technique, which only succeeded in blasting the creatures away; although they were injured, it was not fatal.
These creatures were covered with a mucus that provided them with strong resistance to spells. No wonder the books recorded that these monsters were extremely dangerous.
Time and again, thrashtoads lunged only to be repelled by Amberser, so the creatures wised up, extending their tongues from a distance.
Their projected tongues were like cannon shots, rapid and forceful, forcing Amberser to generate a Mage Shield for protection.

But there were too many thrashtoads, and their tongue shots nearly shattered his body.
“These things are practically mage killers, but luckily, I am not just a mage.”
Amberser opened his personal space with lightning speed and dove into it.
When Amberser reappeared, he had transformed into a Mithril-made Magipuppet Automaton!
The thrashtoads that had found their target again pounced towards Amberser, their fat bodies hitting his mechanized form with enough force to shake him.
Sharp claws struck sparks off Amberser’s body, leaving behind a mass of sticky liquid.
Amberser knew that these were thrashtoad eggs, and had his body been flesh, he would have already been lacerated and parasitized by the eggs.
With magic resistance and close combat resulting in an unsolvable parasitism, it was no wonder the books wrote that these creatures were extremely dangerous.
But a metal body feared nothing!
Amberser’s arms ejected Magic-Breaking Blades, his body spinning like a whirlwind through these monsters, cutting open the thrashtoads, turning them into heaps of mangled flesh.
The mucus on the thrashtoads offered little defense against the razor-sharp blades, and they were quickly chopped up into pieces.
However, poison gas continued to waft from the corpses, further polluting the air.
After killing all the thrashtoads, Amberser took a considerable amount of time to freeze the bodies and disperse the poison gas before he finally dispelled the earthen wall.
Katherine pinched her nose, looking at the frozen Thrashtoad corpses all over the ground, and said curiously, “We didn’t see any of these monsters when we first entered these ruins. What’s going on here? Wait, what’s going on with you? How did you turn from a Lich into something mechanical?”
It was the first time Katherine had seen Amberser’s mithril body, and she was so shocked that she hardly spared a thought for the disgusting corpses.
It was then that Amberser remembered, Katherine hadn’t seen his body of steel before. Not sure how to explain his ability to change materials, Amberser simply said to her, “Alchemy, nothing to make a fuss over.”
“Nothing to make a fuss over?!” Katherine didn’t know what to say, feeling the urge to twist off Amberser’s head.
If it was so easy for a Lich to change into a mechanical body, could it change into a living person too? And if it could turn into a living person, could it still be called a Lich?
Amberser quickly changed the subject, “We didn’t see any Thrashtoad corpses when we started excavating this relic, which means someone must have dealt with them. That likely indicates there are other passages leading outside.”
Amberser’s words made Katherine temporarily forget about the mechanical body as the Elf Queen summoned several small birds to explore within the ruins, and quickly found something.
Katherine pointed toward the distant darkness and said, “There seems to be something strange over there.”
Amberser tried to extend his perception in that direction but felt only boundless depth, as if there was an endless space beyond.
“How strange, how did we not notice it before.”
Amberser strode into the darkness, of course not forgetting to summon a few small Skeletons from the Thrashtoad corpses to clear the path ahead.
To his surprise, after the Skeletons traveled a short distance, they lost contact with Amberser.
“The space here is a bit odd.”
Amberser reached the spot where he lost contact with the Skeletons, then lit a fluorescent light.
The light revealed everything in front of them, prompting Katherine to exclaim in surprise, “Is this… another world?”
The once desolate underground city was full of yellow sand and rubble, with only signs of dry erosion, yet not far ahead, a lush swamp had appeared before them.
The two entirely different worlds were bizarrely conjoined together, with the boundary rippling like water. Amberser’s Skeletons had entered this world, which is why their connection to Amberser had been severed.
Amberser said in confusion, “It’s as if two worlds have been forcibly fused together. I’ve never seen such spatial anomalies. And how did we not notice it when we entered this underground ruin?”
“Look quick, the swamp is shrinking!”
Katherine, keenly observant, noticed that ever since the two had arrived near the connection point of the two spaces, the swamp had been continually shrinking. As if affected by their presence, the two worlds began disconnecting from each other.
“No time to study it now, let’s go in. This might be the only way out.”
Amberser jumped straight over the boundary between the two worlds and into the swamp. Although unsure of what the swamp was about, it was better than being trapped forever in the underground ruins. At least in the swamp, one could see the sky—if all else failed, they could always escape using the Flight Spell.
Katherine had no choice but to follow. The moment the two entered the swamp, the underground ruins behind them completely vanished from sight, as if the two worlds had completely severed their connection.
To Amberser’s surprise, the Thrashtoads he had just killed reappeared in the swamp, their bodies still in the frozen state, and the distance from him was exactly the same as before, only the ground beneath them had changed.
No wonder Amberser hadn’t seen the corpses in the underground city,
Katherine said in confusion, “Does the disconnection of the spatial link bring everything from the original world back? Then why are we able to stay in the swamp?”
After pondering for a moment, Amberser explained, “Because we don’t belong to either world, remember? We’re back in the past. Under normal circumstances, we don’t belong here.”
“That makes sense. So how do we find our way back now? We have no idea where this place is. Besides, I feel like the swamp is glaring at me with malevolence.”
No sooner had Katherine finished speaking when many glowing lights lit up within the swamp.
It was the Thrashtoads again, but this time there was one blue-skinned Thrashtoad and a dozen or so red-skinned ones, with the green-skinned Thrashtoad standing upright on two feet like a human, holding a strangely shaped staff.
Thrashtoads are categorized into red, blue, green, and grey, with grey beings of legendary level, while the green-skinned ones have acquired Spell Casting Ability.
Just as Amberser was preparing to make the first move, he noticed that a large swath of shadows started moving towards them; the entire swamp was filled with Thrashtoads.
Without a second thought, Amberser grabbed Katherine and they flew up into the sky.
But just as they reached the sky, Amberser saw a sight that stunned him.
The swamp beneath was actually quite small, with an area that seemed to be only a few square kilometers, and furthermore, the swamp was floating in mid-air.
Beyond this piece of swamp, various other fragments of different terrains were floating all around.
It was as if a Deity had crushed an entire world and carelessly scattered the pieces throughout The Sea of Chaos.
Things just got troublesome; this was not the original world at all.
