The X Guide-Chapter 143: The Horror Under The Sea (5)
Devion could not hear his thoughts, not knowing Khal was now planning for a future. If he did, what could his reaction be?
Aegi finally answered Devion’s question.
"I think, another one, but I also don’t know." The cute Aegi shrugged, making Devion laugh.
Aegi tilted his head, not knowing what was funny.
"How cute. Well, you both will figure it out soon," Devion encouraged, and messed with the kid’s head, almost making the hood fall.
Aegi could not complain; he only pouted and fixed his hood and hair.
"You like kids?" Khal suddenly chimed in.
"Not really. You know that." Devion turned to him before he stared back at Aegi. "But this kid’s not bad."
Khal agreed.
They truly did not think of kids before. Even when they were dating, the topic of kids was never discussed. Perhaps because they were both men, they never bothered to talk about it.
Also, they were too busy. Not to mention, they were young and thinking of raising kids seemed too early.
Then everything went downhill; thinking about the future seemed like a luxury.
Thinking about it, Ayen truly contributed a lot to the changes that happened between them. It’s like their relationship progressed a bit faster in these three months than in the decade that passed.
Both of them were amazed, to say the least.
Aegi obediently listened, not interrupting them.
They had a lot to ask Aegi about, but they chose to wait for Ayen. That was also something he needed to know about, especially so as Aegi was contracted to him.
The silence stretched, the refreshing breeze brushing past them. Khal noticed Aegi’s eyes becoming heavier, but he was fighting it. Obviously, because of their presence.
"Are you sleepy?" Khal saw how Aegi sat straight; he was still scared for him.
Khal was not offended. He naturally exuded a more chilling presence than Devion.
"You are, aren’t you?"
Aegi slowly nodded. "But, I can..."
He paused, eyes glued to Khal patting his lap. He was confused, almost mistaking the gesture to Khal, wanting him to sleep and pillow on his lap.
"Come here. Sleep. Babies need to sleep." While an anomaly, Aegi still retained his human nature. Perhaps his mother deliberately did that.
It was cruel because of the loneliness Aegi had to endure, but his mother probably did not want his child to be a monster.
A gift and a curse.
Aegi’s eyes widened, not expecting it. Even Devion, who was listening to them. Khal’s attitude surprised him a lot. It was like he was seeing another version of Khal.
This was truly absurd in a way that Devion was amazed that there was still so much to unpack about Khal when they had been together for so long.
Khal waited. He did not say anything or urge Aegi further. Khal had always been like this. Yet, Devion felt he was indeed gentle despite the cold he usually emitted.
Aegi hesitated, but eventually he went and lay down and pillowed on Khal’s lap.
Khal’s gaze softened significantly.
It was weird. Aegi was an anomaly, even if he was a child.
Subconsciously, Khal patted the child softly around the chest, soothing him to sleep.
Truly strange. But he did not dislike it. Slowly, Aegi became comfortable and drifted to sleep.
Devion was watching them, amazed.
"This is my first time seeing you with a kid," Devion commented, "Somehow... You look good."
"You admit I’m handsome?" Khal chuckled, lifting his gaze to meet Dveion’s.
Devion rolled his eyes, shifting Ayen’s position closer.
"I never denied it."
Khal, satisfied with the answer, continued to pat the sleeping child.
"I’m also surprised that you’re fond of the child," Khal said after a pause. "We never really talked about... kids, before."
Devion looked at him in surprise. They did not usually talk about the past, specifically their relationship.
Not because it was uncomfortable, but more so... It was simply awkward. In a way that the situation might become strange. Devion was stubborn like that; Khal knew it, too. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Kids are troublesome," Devion responded after a moment of silence. "We’re also not the type to raise kids, right?"
Khal nodded, not denying it.
Devion licked his lips.
"I thought I already knew everything about you. But, I guess not."
"How so?" Khal gently asked.
Devion stared at him. He did not directly answer.
"But I like it. To discover more details about you, I mean."
Khal met his gaze, their eyes not drifting from each other.
"Did you ever regret it... breaking up with me?"
Devion, stunned, became speechless. Khal always had this habit of talking about something not related to the topic. But was it really?
It was such an unexpected question.
Devion did not immediately answer him. He did not avert his gaze either. He could see that this question had tormented Khal for years.
When he was locked up, Khal never asked him for anything. Even in the years they were living together, he always respected Devion’s choice, however stubborn it may be.
Usually, the pent-up emotions only lead to sex. That was the only way they could express their bottled-up emotions to each other.
If it were before, Devion might joke about it, so the matter would be dropped. And as usual, Khal would smile and let him get away with it.
Yet, he did not see a reason to refuse to answer or lie this time.
"I never regret it." Devion bravely met Khal’s gaze. He could clearly see how Khal’s expression sank slightly. "But, I regret not being honest and telling you what happened to me. For leaving you in the dark."
Devion moistened his lips and continued. "I don’t want to implicate you. So, I never regret breaking things off with you."
Devion was at the lowest point of his life, the curse eating away at his sanity. It was at the critical point, and he was so scared that Khal might suffer with him.
The curse loved his desperation, and Devion nearly succumbed to it. He was afraid that he might harm Khal, and so he left. That was immature of him, but the only escape from the reality he was facing.
