The Wolfless Luna's Revenge: Returning With His Secret Twins-Chapter 300
~Samantha~
"Or they’d have tortured the location out of someone before killing them."
"They tried. Trust me, they tried." Lila’s voice went flat. "But the clan leader died before revealing it. And the rest of us scattered before they could catch us all."
"So you want us to go to this mine." Killian studied the map. "Retrieve the relics before Black Moon figures out where they are."
"And use them to fight back. The weapons there are specifically designed to combat shadow corruption. We’d actually have a chance instead of just running and hiding."
"Sounds like a trap," Dominic called from where he stood near the trees.
"That sounds like exactly what you’d say," Lila shot back.
"Because everything has been a trap so far!" Dominic walked back toward us. "Now you want to lead us to some secret mine that might not even exist. Forgive me for being skeptical."
"The mine exists. The relics exist. And if you’re too paranoid to go, fine. I’ll go myself." Lila folded the map back up. "But I’m taking the necklace. I need it to fully open the wards."
"You’re not taking anything." Dominic stepped between her and me. "Especially not something that belongs to Sam’s family."
"I’ll go with her." Killian’s voice objected. "Sam can stay here with you and the twins. I’ll make sure Lila gets what she needs and comes back."
"No." The word came out of me before I thought about it. "If anyone’s going, it’s me. That necklace is my mother’s. This is my responsibility."
"Sam." Dominic started.
"You know once my mind is made up, I can’t change it."
"In that case, wherever you go, I’ll follow." Dominic’s voice was firm.
"Three is better than two if we run into trouble. Four, actually." Killian involved Lila in the headcount.
"We wanna come!" The twins said it at the same time.
"Read my lips, kiddos, NO."
"Dad, please!" Diana grabbed his hand. "We promise we’ll be good! We’ll stay quiet and do whatever you say!"
"The answer is still no."
"We’ll be safer with you than here alone!" Devon’s voice cracked. "What if shadow wolves come back while you’re gone? What if something happens and nobody’s here to protect us?"
He had a point. "We’ll leave guards," Dominic said.
"Guards didn’t stop us from sneaking out last time," Diana pointed out.
"Then we’ll lock you in a tent."
"Dad!" Both twins looked horrified.
I put my hand on Dominic’s arm. "Maybe they’re right."
He turned to stare at me. "You cannot be serious."
"They’re safer with us than anywhere else. You know that." I kept my voice low. "And if we leave them here, they’ll just follow us again. At least this way we can watch them."
"Sam, they almost died an hour ago."
"I know. But they’ll be in more danger if we leave them behind and they try to follow." I looked at the twins. "And this time, they’ll actually listen to us. Right?"
"Right!" Both nodded frantically.
"We promise!" Diana held up her pinky. "Pinky promise!"
"Pinky promises mean nothing when shadow wolves are involved," Dominic muttered.
But I could see him wavering. Could see him running through scenarios in his head, weighing risks.
"If and this is a big if, we bring them, they stay between us at all times. No running ahead. No investigating things. No using their powers unless I specifically tell them to." He looked at each twin. "Break any of those rules and we turn around immediately. Understood?"
"Understood!" Devon nodded so hard his whole body moved.
"We’ll be so good!" Diana was practically vibrating. "The best! You won’t even know we’re there!"
"I doubt that." Dominic ran his hand through his hair. Looked at me. "This is a mistake."
"Probably. But it’s the least bad option we have."
"We leave in twenty minutes."
The twins scrambled to gather their things. Killian started checking weapons. Lila folded her map and tucked it away.
When it was time to hit the road, Lila led the way. Killian followed her, holding the twins on both sides while Dominic stuck to me like glue.
Everytime Killian struck a conversation with me, Dominic would shut it down immediately. His presence was like this huge wall between us that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
"How much farther?" Devon asked after what felt like hours.
"Another mile. Maybe two." Lila didn’t slow down. "We should reach it before dark."
"Should? You don’t know for sure?" Dominic questioned.
"It’s been ten years since I’ve been there. The forest changes. But I know the general direction."
"General direction is not the same as knowing where we’re going."
"Would you like to lead?" Lila stopped and turned around. "Be my guest. I’ll just wait here while you wander aimlessly."
"I’d rather wander aimlessly than follow someone who’s guessing."
"Can we please not fight?" I stepped between them. "We’re almost there. Let’s just keep moving."
Lila gave Dominic one last glare before turning back around.
Dominic moved even closer to me. His hand settled on my lower back. Stayed there.
"With Lila knowing where the mine is? She’d just come back later without us."
"Or maybe, she won’t. Not everybody has an ulterior motive, you know."
"If she was such a Good Samaritan, she would have cared when we mentioned how the twins followed her so, I’m sorry but I don’t fully trust her."
"I hate that you make sense sometimes."
"You are going to thank me later."
“Whatever you do, just make sure you don’t annoy her to the point where she abandons us when we need her the most.” I warned him.
“But we were doing fine before she came along.”
“I’m serious, Dominic.”
“Damn, I heard you.”
“You better because I really don’t want to fight with you.”
The forest opened up ahead. A clearing. And in the middle of the clearing, built into the side of a hill, was a mine entrance.
"There." Lila pointed. "That’s it."
